The Nan Shan River is a large river in the southern Earth Kingdom. Though the current is very strong in some places, in others the water forms in calm pools and streams, making them ideal for bathing (or washing a sky bison).A duel between Katara, Sokka, Mai, and Ty Lee took place by the river.
[edit] History
Not much is known about the early uses of the river, but it is likely that it was a food or water source to the people living in the Abandoned Town.
The duel by Nan Shan River
During "The Chase", Appa sheds his thick coat of hair, which gave Princess Azula and her allies an easy trail to follow. The Avatar and friends bathed Appa in the river so he no longer would shed his hair. Azula, however, was able to see though their charade due to the fur in the water and the broken trees, causing Mai and Ty Lee to once more pick up the trail of the Avatar's friends.
As they saw Mai and Ty Lee pursue them, Katara and Sokka tried their best to escape the girls. After Appa crossed the river, they momentarily thought they were safe. Mai was able to pin Katara to a tree, and Ty Lee easily paralyzed Sokka. Despite their victory, Appa quickly smacked them into the river with his tail. While the two soaked girls swam out of the river, Ty Lee told Mai she thought Sokka was "kinda cute".
