The Mining Village is a medium-sized village located in the Earth Kingdom. It is located on the Northwestern coast of the Earth Kingdom, and its inhabitants make a living by mining coal in several nearby mines.

Haru, a young man and a devoted ally to the Avatar, hails from this village and lives with his mother. His father, Tyro was one of many Earthbenders who were captured by the Fire Nation.

It appears in "Imprisoned" and is not to be confused with the Abandoned Mining Town seen in "The Chase".

[edit] History

The Village

The village came under Fire Nation control for quite some time during The War. Villagers were forced to mine coal to fuel the war effort worldwide. The people were forced to pay heavy taxes and live in constant fear of their occupiers. Earthbending was strictly forbidden by the authorities and any citizen found to be an Earthbender was immediately arrested and sent to a prison rig located several miles off the coast. The villagers lost their will to resist the people who had stripped them of their freedom.

Avatar Aang and his friends visited this village shortly after Aang's revival from the iceberg and met Haru during their stay here. The group, especially Katara, quickly befriended Haru and felt moved to rescue him from captivity when he too was captured by the Fire Nation for Earthbending. Katara tricked the Fire Nation into arresting her for Earthbending and was reunited with Haru on the rig. Haru too had finally found his long-lost father. Feeling a desire to help the prisoners, Katara urged the Earthbenders to fight back, but their fighting spirits had been broken. Fortunately, Katara found that the coal being processed on the rig was bendable, so Haru, Tyro, and the prisoners were finally able to defeat their captors and flee back to the village on stolen warships. The liberated Earthbenders swore to drive the Fire Nation out of their villages and thanked Katara for helping them find their strength.

Although the village has not been seen since its first appearance it was confirmed by Tyro and Haru in The Day of Black Sun, Part 1: The Invasion that they succeeded in liberating their village and fought a successful campaign against the invaders.

[edit] Fire Nation Prison Rig

The Fire Nation Prison Rig is a towering facility that serves as both a dockyard for the Fire Nation Navy and as a prison for captured Earthbenders. It is capable of holding hundreds of prisoners and is run by a cruel Warden who delights in mocking his prisoners, who he sarcastically calls his "guests". The facility processes coal for warships and is made entirely of metal, which almost no Earthbender can bend. This is the perfect environment to deprive the Earthbenders of their strength and desire to resist their captors.

It has probably been decommissioned or destroyed following the end of The War.
