That's always good for me to hear that someone's excited for the next chapter, though it doesn't surprise me that it's you. xD And I'm doing good. School starts tomorrow for me...Yay! :D I can't wait! Anyways, glad to hear that you're excited about moving. I've lived in the same house since '01....AvatarLover

Yes, I'm in 8th grade. :) I hope you like the new chapter. Let me know what you think. Aw. At least you're still keeping in touch. :) And (about the new neighborhood) that stinks, but hopefully you can still enjoy yourself there. :) AvatarLover

"This edit is weak, just like the rest of your contributions! They did not deserve to exist in this wiki — in the Avatar Wiki! Prepare to be undone. Prepare to be DELETED!'" In the light of some recent events and a blog post, I’ve begun to wonder: “Are we Edit Ozai’s?” Avatar Wiki is a safe haven for all of us. There a lot of users here, all with different goals, different interests, different backgrounds, but a common love: Avatar and Avatar Wiki. Some just come here to chat or comment, while others are becoming the next Shakespeare, Charles Dickens or Jane Austen on the Fanon Portal. And then there are those addicted editors. You know them, the ones that are always stalking the “recent changes” and tirelessly looking out for the general quality of this wiki’s pages. All this people have come together to form a wonderful, lovely and supporting community. Or at least, that is how the resident, well-known users see it. But what about those hundreds of anonymous and not known users? Many of them come here to explore our vast information about Avatar and some of them also try to chip in to better our articles, but when they do, their edits are watched like a hawk and many of them end up being reverted. In the light of a recent blog, it would be very hypocritical of me not to admit that I am one of those “watching hawks, ready to revert bad edits”. Whatever we do — most of us, not vandals of course — we do with the wiki’s best interest at heart, both the hawks and the new editors. But maybe, somewhere along the way of our noble goal in trying to rid the Wiki of bad edits, the Hawks have also lost some of their kindness.

For many of us, particularly administrators, fanon administrators and experienced rollback users, the recent changes log is the very heart of the wiki. The information we gain from it is much more difficult to obtain by other means (such as Wiki Activity), and is of immense value. We are dependent on it as a system of quality control, as an anti-vandalism tool and as a way to stay up to date with what's happening around in the community. You can imagine the problems that would arise when this all-important feed becomes much less easy to peruse... or even almost impossible to scroll through. Problem-plagued edits may suddenly slip through the net. Discussions could be missed. Mistakes may take longer to be noticed and rectified. And when the phenomenon that old-timers like to call "RC flood" comes washing down, this is exactly what happens. It's not cool. Because not all of us are jargon-chewing, grumpy grey-beards, "RC flood", or "recent changes flood", refers to the situation when a user, or a group of users, make repetitive edits to a large number of pages (generally more than a few dozen) within a short period of time without a bot flag. (It should be distinguished from the situation where a user makes a large number of non-repetitive edits, such as masses of extensive grammar fixes.) The solution is just too simple: request for a bot to make those edits. Unfortunately — and I'm not going to name names here — it's been happening far too often on Avatar Wiki lately. It doesn't matter how important or how helpful the change is. It's just not necessary to flood one of the wiki's most important pages when we have two bots employing pywikipedia for fully automated runs. You can't beat them in editing speed, anyway. So instead of annoying us all with hundreds of edits (which conveniently often also win points for badge achievements... let's not go there), ask for Thailot or The 888th Bot whenever there is a change that requires a large number of repetitive edits, like adding text, a template, or changing the name of category. Try to put a smile on that grumpy grey-beard's face. Wait. Who are the grey-beards, anyway? Excuse me while I engage in some shifty stalking...

In the past three months, many new articles are being created, to bring us closer to being the ultimate resource about Avatar in existence. However, some pages are utterly unneeded. Many of the pages created have individual articles in the no-longer-updated official nick.com site. If we don't have pages for all the characters and information in the official Avatar website, we can surely never call ourselves the best Avatar resource in existence. Sometimes, however, article creation goes way over the line. The Corn Man article is about a very minor character who appeared for barely 6-9 seconds in the episode. Why do we keep a page for such a minor character? Avatar Wiki's deletion policy clearly lists "Articles about minute details, e.g. "Zuko's Firebending" or "Unnamed House in Ba Sing Se" in the "What Not to Create" heading. Another one of an utterly unneeded page is Iroh's Sandal. While I voted it to be kept in the deletion discussion, I only voted for the information to be kept rather than the page itself. Why did I do it? Because, we don't have articles for Sokka's sarcasm, and so on. I agree, the sandal did play an important role and part in saving Iroh the first time and finding the Order of the White Lotus the second time, but a page for a footwear?

We are a wiki. Wikis operate on the assumption that a resource will be more wonderfully detailed and accurate than any other if there are more people with the ability to edit it. They are, by their fundamental nature, places that can only function through continued collaboration by a stable community, and Avatar Wiki is no exception to the rule. The continued success of the site is conditional on our ability and willingness to unite and work together. Unfortunately, the stability of the community, the foundation of Avatar Wiki, has recently been attacked and severely undermined. Our continued constructive collaboration is dependent on whether we can attain mutual respect between all community members. We are all different. We are all unique individuals, but on top of this we also come from different countries and from different cultural backgrounds. These differences can only be bridged by respecting them — even if there is disagreement as to whether these beliefs are correct or even valid — and moving on. If we are unable to put aside these differences and work towards a greater goal, than we cannot hope to accomplish anything other than useless squabble. This is not a matter of political correctness. It is not a matter of whether it is better to be more kind or more blunt. It is not a matter of how fearlessly we should speak "the truth". It is a matter of survival, and matters of survival are non-negotiable. We would sincerely hope for all Avatar fans to be able to be part of this site. But if you find that you cannot respect the community, then you are not welcome on Avatar Wiki.

Unfortunately, Rassilon of Old has recently resigned the position of deputy editor of The Ba Sing Se Times. As probably the main person working behind the scenes on compiling this newsletter for the past several issues, I would like to thank him for his significant contributions in this regard, and I wish him the very best for his increased focus on study moving forward. The loss of Rass for The Ba Sing Se Times truly is immense. Because of this, The Ba Sing Se Times is currently looking for a new deputy editor. The deputy editor has previously been required to compile all articles for the newsletter fortnightly offsite, write at least one column, choose the "random poll" and fill out the discussion and user rights reports. It is expected that a new deputy editor would be able to fulfill these functions as well, but the exact separation of tasks is fully negotiable. Unfortunately, if no suitable candidate(s) are found, the newsletter will need to be suspended for the next four weeks and one issue will be skipped, as I have other engagements that are impossible to avoid. Depending on demand, it is possible – and preferable – for there to be more than one deputy editor. If you are interested, just express it below in the comments.

In recent months, it has become a trend among users leaving the wiki to write a blog post announcing their departure, and these are now considered commonplace. While it is certainly proper to feel regret when individuals leave and to hope for their return sooner rather than later, this new phenomenon has also instigated isolated bouts of a syndrome: The deadly "Avatar Wiki is dying" fever. The wiki is not dying. Like all websites, Avatar Wiki will go through some periods of higher traffic volumes, and some periods of lower traffic volumes. Activity levels will generally fluctuate depending on a number of factors, such as whether new information is being released, whether the site is doing well on search engine rankings, and simple luck. But even when traffic drops, there is a "floor". Since the release of The Last Airbender in July 2010, month-on-month drops have occurred four times. There have never been fewer than 180,000 visitors per month in that time. So why all the "I'm leaving" blog posts? I suggest that their current prevalence is due to a shift towards making those kinds of posts rather than becoming inactive quietly, as people used to. With a staggering 26 active rollback users (there were fewer than a dozen eighteen months ago), this makes much more sense than panicking that "Avatar Wiki is dying". Take it easy, tiger. Congratulations to Natsu11 and Theavatardemotivator, who have become joint deputy editors at The Ba Sing Se Times. Natsu will be primarily take responsibility for the compilation of the newsletter, while TAD will be the resident copyeditor.

Recently, the United States House of Representatives introduced what they call the "Stop Online Piracy Act", abbreviated "SOPA". It corresponds to the similar legislative proposal written by the United States Senate, the "Protect IP Act". The bill, as written, would provide American authorities and media industry special interests with the power to make "rogue" sites virtually disappear from the Internet for Americans, similar to the "Great Firewall of China" on the other side of the Pacific. The act would give these groups excessive power to inhibit free speech. It would also give them the ability to disrupt the operation of content providers, including wikis, even where content providers are taking reasonable steps to prevent copyright violations. If you did not understand all that – this legislation could create a system of censorship, even for non-Americans. We believe that it is imperative to take a stand against it now. American or not, tell Congress to stand down. If you are an American, write to your local Congress member in opposition to this legislation. Help prevent Internet censorship today.

Recently, there have been a number of leaks of official material to sources of varying credibility and reputation around the Internet. The most damaging of these has been the posting of enough pages from Gene Yang's upcoming graphic novel to deduce all of its major plot points. Only a few days ago, images from the opening sequences for The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra also surfaced before a personal request from Mike DiMartino was issued to remove links to it. As a site that does its best to respect copyrights, to uphold moral rights and to protect the integrity of the franchise, Avatar Wiki does not, and should not, condone or spread leaked spoilers. In contrast to some sites (the moral compass of whom could be questioned), we operate with the intention of catering the widest Avatar audience possible. Many on this site don't appreciate their enjoyment of franchise installments being hampered by leaks. We should keep this in mind across the site's various communication and informative features, particularly comments. They become difficult to administrate when many of our rollback users and administrators don't want to see leaks, but may stumble across them by accident during the course of work. Avatar Wiki should set an example by taking a stand against the unethical spread of leaks. Prevention of further leaks is preferable.

Many of you must know the best wiki poll for 2011, and some of you might know the conflicts and problems surrounding it. First of all, I'd like to link Lostris' comment here. While the poll wasn't meant to be official, many users considered it to be official, and users have even been cussing and swearing. I don't understand why they do this. Users have been accusing wikis of using sockpuppets for getting more votes, and this is "getting really out of hand". Even if they do insult us, why do we need to respond to their comments, and ingite the fire, further? Right from when the competition started, users have taken it very seriously, and have bashed and "fought" over it. This is a simple competition, and it is not even official. Why in the world do we need to keep worrying about Avatar Wiki's rank? There are many other good wikis, and why do we keep saying that "This wiki is better than the other," when all wikis are as important as the other?
