Template Problem Edit

On Template: Guardian's War, your bot ended up leaving a </span> tag in the header of my template. It's fine now, but you did ask to have problems reported to you. --I'm The Bos - Talk - Guardian 14:53, August 19, 2010 (UTC)

Not technically a problem, your template was badly written, but the bot expects it to not be badly written so it goes ahead anyway. Joey aa 23:30, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the same thing happened to me. Why did you edit my template when it had no effect on what it looked like? You just changed it from "<font color>" to "<span style>". What was the point of that? I mean, it's no problem, but it was just without purpose. -- Dudewaldo4 Kuruk-sprite My stories 01:18, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
It's not without reason: font tags are deprecated, and really poor on our behalf. We're on XHTML 1 trans, yet some of our stuff uses font tags, that's unacceptable. We need to migrate all of our font and other deprecated/bad form HTML to proper form and nip this in the butt. Joey aa 02:31, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry I'm being annoying, but I still don't understand what's wrong with it though. Like, why is it a problem? I'd love to help remove the font tags but why is it necessary? -- Dudewaldo4 Kuruk-sprite My stories 15:39, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
Template: Battle. On the template page, it's fine, but when it's put into use, you can see that it has a problem with the Source button aligning to the center. --I'm The Bos - Talk - Guardian 20:52, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
I've fixed it. Thanks, Joey aa 02:36, August 22, 2010 (UTC)

Stolen Work Edit

Hello, I have a complaint. Waterkai is a user here on the wikia making fanon articles that are almost ALL plagiarized from my work on Bleach Fan Fiction Wikia. The Hanullim thing he "made" is a Zanpakuto of my main Bleach character. His reality and dream bending are also works that are all mine, and not just based on my work, but literally copy-pasted directly from my Bleach and even Naruto Fanon works. I request that he be asked to remove all traces of my stolen work here, which I shall list below, or I will be forced to take action by contacting wikia community personally.

Thank you, and have a nice day. --Seireitou-shishō File:Seireitou's signature picture.jpg(瀞霊冬川平) 21:44, August 22, 2010 (UTC)

Email Edit

Many thanks. In a different matter, did something happen to the comment feature? I still see logs of them being created in the recent changes, but some of them don't show up in articles. When I tested making a comment, it showed up alright. Is this a bug or a feature that hides comments, since some of the ones I looked for were vandalism I intended deleting. I've tried clearing my cache, but nothing changes. Happens in IE, Firefox, Chrome and Opera, all latest stable version. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 14:30, August 29, 2010 (UTC)

They can be nested now, and as they are paginated, if I comment on somebody's comment from the last page, it won't appear on the page unless you go to that page, but will appear in RC because it did happen today. Best way I do it is to just go to their contribs, then go to link with &action=delete in it. Or click show all comments. Joey aa 21:31, August 29, 2010 (UTC)
Figured the first part when I dug deeper, though clicking in the comment link in the contributions just takes me to the article, but might just be one of those Opera issues. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 21:53, August 29, 2010 (UTC)
That's a "feature" they added, you don't want to go to the comment when clicking it in the recent changed (you want to go to the blog, or so they assumed). The simplest way then is to copy the url, paste into url bar, and append ?&redirect=no&action=delete to it then go... Not that ideal, but what can i say. Joey aa 21:57, August 29, 2010 (UTC)

Site speed Edit

Any idea on why the site could be so slow to me? No matter the browser I use, this always loads very sluggishly when compared to other wikis. Is it because of multiple skins, scripting or the large amount of comments? Not sure about the comments because I've been noticing a speed decrease since before comments were enabled, but I don't know if they contributed to this. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 01:00, September 2, 2010 (UTC)

That happens sometimes to me, it may just be some bugs.Courage the Cowardly UserOzai-sprite2 01:01, September 2, 2010 (UTC)

It may just be Wikia being slow, although I'm not sure why other wikis would feel faster for you (unless you compared them and wikia as slow for us and not for them). The multiple skins isn't actually much for site speed, the browser just has to download a couple kb file of css in addition to regular wikis and render it, and we don't use much js. Can you give me an example page or time you noticed it? I'm going to be investigating our site speed and trying to increase it during the upcoming months. Joey aa 01:22, September 2, 2010 (UTC)

Redirect cleaning Edit

I'm cleaning double and broken redirects. Haven't started with the broken ones yet, but I can run in a similar problem. While I had no trouble redirecting blog posts, I can't edit or delete the redirect of article comments. When I click it, it takes me to the article's main page. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 04:45, September 6, 2010 (UTC)

Never mind, found a way around it. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 04:47, September 6, 2010 (UTC)
On a related note, can we run a bot from time to time to clean the double redirects? Wikipedia has a bot which does that if I'm not mistaken. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 05:00, September 6, 2010 (UTC)
I usually have a 'bot night' where I go through the wikis I'm active at and do some bot maintenance (including that), about once 1-3 months. It seems I'm a tad slow, so I'll see what I can do. Joey aa 18:33, September 18, 2010 (UTC)

My Picture Situation Edit

Okay, so I've been working really hard on my fanon, and a moderator named, Thailog keeps deleting my pictures without warning. When I asked him why they were deleted, he said it was because there wasn't a source, no licence, and it was altered. I know he's a moderator, and I'm sure some may say I'm "snitching" because I'm mad my stuff got taken off, but thats only partly why I'm mad. He never gave me a warning before he deleted them, and he never explained to me how to source it. Another thing is the picture I used for Fanon:Chronicles of Ian wasn't copyrighted, and therefore I had the right to use it. Then he's saying it was alterd. I don't see what the problem is when I edit the picture to say "Chronicles of Ian" with that font, and placed Fanon:Ian's face on it. I really hate being a bother, I'm sorry if this is aggrovating, and I would appriciate it if someone could explain to me how to source an image "properly" and how to get a "licence" for it.
Thank you for your time,
*~~Ian Bernard~~*

New skin Edit

I've been around and noticed that there was this link saying how Wikia is going to change its skin and all, and I can't help to see that some places are not very pleased with the changes. Since you're the code-savvy one here, how will this change affect us? Will it be a smooth and pleasant change like the Wikipedia skin and functionality change earlier this year, or will the change FUBAR the wiki? Do we have a forum here discussing this already? Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 20:46, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

Load up reddead.wikia and change your skin in your preferences to wikia's new look. It's a new skin, a lot of things are moved/changed, i don't know if you remember the monobook to monaco transition from way back, but it's similar to that. I'll work on some new themes for us of course as we work towards the release date. Joey aa 23:47, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

Picture Problems Edit

Hello Joeyaa,

My name is Ian Bernard and I am the author of The Chronicles of Ian. I am having some troubles with an admin, Thailog. When I upload a photo onto the wiki, he takes it upon himself to delete the image, if there is an issue with it. I know he is just doing his job, but I feel he isn't doing his job properly. He gives me no warning before the deletion, and no assistance if the problem can be fixed. The image, Hawky7.png was uploaded by me so I could use it as an image for a template I made to give to users who won my unofficial Hawky Awards. When I uploaded the image, I accidentally put the origin in the source field. Thailog instantly deleted the image, without warning, when I could have easily fixed the problem in no time at all. Other users are also unsatisfied with his actions. I hate to be the one to complain, but I feel he is misusing his powers as an admin. A proper admin would first warn the user of the upcoming deletion, bring to their attention that there is a problem with the image, assist the uploader in fixing the problem, and if the user in incapable of fixing the problem themselves, try their best to fix it for them. Thailog does not do so, and I would like to see not that he is removed as an admin, but an apology, and him doing his job the way it should be done. I understand that when a user uploads an image to the wiki, there is an instruction manual on how to upload properly, but many still do not understand how to properly upload their images. I think a little more instruction should be added to the upload image page, which would lessen the amount of mistakes made upon a users upload.

Thanks for your time,

Main Page Edit

Hi! I was told you are the one to contact with questions regarding wikia design. This is by far the highest quality wikia I've ever seen. I had thought that what one would do in terms of customization was very limited due to the software, but I was clearly wrong. I'm wondering how you (and the other designers) were able to create the background for this site, the main page design, the color scheme. I wouldn't want to ask for your help on my wikia (George Lopez), but I would love to know how the quality of this wikia was achieved. Hi Joey. I've left a forum post concerning the community portal design. It's been a while since a non-admin has done made any large changes to it, so I've decided to draft a proposal. I know you probably want to design it yourself, so good luck. I'm just letting you know that there does exist an organizational idea (in complete code) on the forums. It's probably far from your standards, but feel free to use any part of it you want (if you like it at all). With kind regards, Nick Lewis (talkcontribs) 02:53, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Homework Edit

You wanted a few possible suggestions for the wiki..so..tossing some out.

  1. Give remove comments ability to rollback privileged users
  2. User page: allow 1 uploaded image
  3. Loosen the rules that disallow any removal of information from Talk pages - allow for removal of obvious spam or irrelevant conversations. (Such as the "Bending statistics" on Zuko's talk page...)
  4. Clean up fanon section; as in get old fanon's that just aren't good out of there. Tighten rules to enforce keeping legible, enjoyable fanons rather than ones that are horribly written/grammatically incorrect, and the characters must be at least marginally in character. An overall main plot must be stated on the fanon's main page (not just a collection of one-shots with no overall premise). What I mean by this is make it easier to remove obviously unacceptable fanons (Such as the nony spammed fanon) The Bos already does a great job, perhaps he would appreciate some support in this area.
  5. Clean up blogs. Blogs must be about a valid topic that instigates discussion, more than just a shout-out to the public. Undescriptive one or two sentence blogs should be removed when sighted.
  6. Make official conversational topics/blogs regarding the mysteries of Avatar. (Such as Water Spout's example blogs)
  7. Consider possibly expanding to spotlighting Fanart (fanon section, obviously). Aka, have a section "Featured Fanart" by user-made uploads.
  8. Make a new page for a "How-To" guide for using the wiki, with little tips for easy browsing. Ex, "See More" below the popular blogs displays a list of blog topics. This How To page should have screenshots that depict where said features can be seen.
  9. More social events / such as contests. Sorry, we don't have specific examples with this....
  10. Rework how-to pages to be more clear and concise

~by Courage the Cowardly User & Vulmen (talkcontribs) 04:54, November 15, 2010 (UTC)

My responses:
  1. This sounds okay to me, and talking to Joey, he approves of it too. This should be implemented very soon, unless there is widespread community dissent on the matter (which I seriously doubt).
  2. I can't agree with this one. We want to stay clear of Nickolodeon's wrath. I want to clarify, though, that you can upload images in the public domain, images you created yourself, or use images that are already on the wiki. I think that's a lot of images already. :)
  3. Obvious spam, abuse and irrelevant conversations can already be removed. It's just substantial coversations that cannot, so no change required here. I might clarify this further on our policies though.
  4. Most of the fanon admins have not been editing too regularly, so there may be a backlog in this area. If the fanon admins allow me to, I can help with cleaning up fanon regularly as well. My suggestion would be to move the really bad pages immediately to a user subpage, and make them fix it before putting it back onto our fanon namespace. Then we wouldn't have to check each page after thirty days to see whether it needs to be deleted - that is tedious work.
  5. This sounds good to me. I think I've already elaborated somewhat on this on my last blog post. In future, any blog post will be deleted if an administrator believes that it is far too short. Let me know if you disagree with this and we can go for a wider consultation.
  6. I was the main guy doing the official blog posts for the wiki in the past, and after my exams this week and next, I'll be happy to write more. I can also make a blog listing page for these kinds of blogs to incorporate good posts such as Water Spout's, and my own.
  7. I don't know about this one, and Joey I know doesn't think too much of it. If you like, you can make a more formal proposal for this in a blog post or the forums for community feedback.
  8. This wiki "outsources" this stuff to Wikia Help. If you think something is unclear, you can always go to that wiki and fix things yourself. :) As a for a browsing guide, I will just add a little one at the end of our "About us" page.
  9. I talked to Joey; there is a contest coming from him very soon. I also plan to create a special kind of "social event" (that is not a contest) soon.
  10. Again, this is Wikia Help's problem, not ours. :)
Those are some good suggestions! The 888th Avatar (talk) 09:08, November 15, 2010 (UTC)

Main Page/Contest Feedback Edit

  • Main Page - The main page I think is well desgined and it fits in well with the new wikia skin. It also has easy to use links to characters, the FA, User of the Month etc. Also the fanon portal is now featured in a way that will make more visitors notice and view it.
  • Korra Contest - The contest was a good idea to see what users could come up with, although I doubt it would have as successful without a badge prize. I personally did not participate but the idea was solid and seems to have worked out well. I would like to see more of them in the future so we could see what people could come up regarding other subjects.

User rights Edit

Per the spirit of our community agreements and policies on administrator inactivity, Omni's bureaucrat and administrator user rights should be removed. As someone with profound respect for him, I deeply regret this; however, it is clear that he does not believe that he will return to this wiki anytime soon. He is unable to fulfil his obligations to the community as an administrator and bureaucrat, and it would be unfair for him to hold on to rights that others have lost in the past for inactivity.
