Melon Lord was created three days before the arrival of Sozin's Comet in an attempt by Sokka to train Avatar Aang for his inevitable fight with Fire Lord Ozai. The Melon Lord was a mannequin dressed in a Fire Nation-style robe, and was given its name for the melon that comprised its head.
In the training exercise, Toph represented the Melon Lord's defense as the rest of Team Avatar practiced offensive tactics which they could later apply in a fight with the Fire Lord, though Toph gets too much into character, claiming herself to be Melon Lord while laughing evilly. The members of the Team executed a multi-pronged attack intending to distract and deplete the energies of the Melon Lord, with the Avatar dealing the killing blow.
The Melon Lord helped Team Avatar through showing them that Aang would be unable to kill the Fire Lord when the time came, as he did not have the heart to kill the Melon Lord when it was demanded of him. The ultimate demise of the Melon Lord came when Sokka split its melon head in half with his sword in a demonstration for the Avatar on how to kill it. One of the halves was promptly eaten by the lemur Momo, destroying any chance the Melon Lord might have had at healing.
