The World of Avatar is divided into four separate nations, the Air Nomads, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation. Each location has unique physical geography, landmarks, climates and demography which are shown below. The Air Nomads have four temples located in the north, south, east and west. There are two main Water Tribes; northern and southern. The Earth Kingdom is the biggest nation in the world and is the most populous nation. The Fire Nation is located in the west of the world and is a volcanic island. Each nation has a predominant season. The geography and its fields have a great influence in the customs and culture of each nation.

Southern Air Temple Edit

Main article: Southern Air Temple

The Southern Air Temple -sometimes called the Jongmu Temple, as seen in the Lost Scrolls books- is one of the four temples, located near the south pole, and houses male airbenders exclusively. It is notable as the childhood home of Avatar Aang.[1]

Northern Air Temple Edit

Main article: Northern Air Temple

The Northern Air Temple is another temple exclusively housing male airbenders. It is located in the upper reaches of the northern Earth Kingdom, on a snowy mountain. It was also a victim of the Air Nomad Genocide, along with the Eastern, Western, and Southern air temples. The temple is notable for the population of Earth Kingdom refugees, led by the mechanist, that have settled in and colonized it.[2]

Eastern Air Temple Edit

Main article: Eastern Air Temple

The Eastern Air Temple was one of the two temples exclusively housing female airbenders, the other being the Western Air Temple. Like the other temples, its population was completely wiped out during the Air Nomad Genocide. Guru Pathik lived here for an extended period of time, where he trained Aang in controlling the Avatar State.[3]

Western Air Temple Edit

Main article: Western Air Temple

The Western Air Temple was the counterpart to the Eastern Air Temple, housing exclusively female airbenders. It is located in the mountains north of the Fire Nation, resembling an upside-down pagoda. It was also victim to the Air Nomad Genocide, which destroyed most of the population. The temple is notable in that, unlike the other three temples, it is situated underneath the edge of a cliff, as opposed to a mountaintop. The spires seem as though they were built upside-down, and because of that, the temple is hidden to the passerby.[4]

Water Tribe Edit

Northern Water Tribe.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

Northern Water Tribe Edit

Main article: Northern Water Tribe

The Northern Water Tribe is the northern division of the Water Tribe. Its people are entirely contained within one city located at the North Pole, which is the only surviving city of the Water Tribe. Built inside high walls of ice and surrounded by an inhospitable terrain, the city prospers from its isolation.[5] No attack by the Fire Nation on the city during the Hundred Year War has ever succeeded, including the massive Siege of the North orchestrated by Admiral Zhao.[6] Unlike its Southern sister tribe, the people of the Northern Water Tribe are still thriving and prosperous.

Southern Water Tribe Edit

Main article: Southern Water Tribe

The Southern Water Tribe is the southern division of the Water Tribe. Its people are scattered in tiny villages and settlements located across the South Pole.[7] Unlike its northern sister tribe, the people of the Southern Water Tribe are teetering on the edge of extinction due to Fire Nation raids.[8]

Foggy Swamp Tribe Edit

Main article: Foggy Swamp Tribe

Also known simply as The Swamp, this vast, mysterious wetland covers a very large area of the southwest Earth Kingdom and is home to the Foggy Swamp Tribe, who are descended from emigrants from the Southern Water Tribe. The swamp has an extensive array of flora and fauna.[9] The swamp is a series of roots connected by one central tree.

Ba Sing Se Edit
Main article: Ba Sing Se
Ba Sing Se.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

Ba Sing Se is the titanic capital of the Earth Kingdom, encompassing nearly all of the northeast corner of the kingdom. It was the last great Earth Kingdom stronghold after the fall of Omashu.[10] The city is by far the largest city in any of the four nations. Ba Sing Se means "impenetrable city"; the city is so named for its two world-famous walls, the gates of which have no hinges or other hardware and are opened by use of earthbending.[11]

Serpent's Pass Edit
Main article: Serpent's Pass

The Serpent's Pass is a narrow strip of land between two large lakes, that links the Southern and Northern halves of the Earth Kingdom. It is one of the very few direct paths to the capital, Ba Sing Se. It is named after the serpent which guards the point where the East and West lakes meet. At this point the Serpent's pass for a short distance disappears under the lakes. All of this makes the pass feared in the Earth Kingdom. Most refugees refuse to use the pass and instead cross the lake by boat.[12]

North-western regions Edit

Makapu Village Edit
Main article: Makapu Village

Makapu Village is a small farming town located in the northwestern Earth Kingdom on the slopes of the active volcano, Mt. Makapu. Volcanic eruptions have caused the soil around the volcano to become rich in minerals, making it perfect for farming. It is notable for being the place of residence of the fortuneteller Aunt Wu. The village is also home to the rare Panda lily flower, which grows on the crater of the volcano. It is a symbol of undying love and unity.[13]

ThailogAdded by Thailog

Omashu is the second largest city in the Earth Kingdom and the capital of one of its provinces.[15] Only Ba Sing Se, the titanic capital of the Earth Kingdom, is larger. It was one of the last great strongholds of the Earth Kingdom before its fall in the months before the end of the Hundred Year War and a supplier of men and weaponry. Previously ruled by King Bumi, Omashu was taken over by the Fire Nation and renamed New Ozai.[10] During the Day of Black Sun, King Bumi single-handedly liberated Omashu and all the powerless firebenders abandoned the city.

Gaoling Edit
Main article: Gaoling

Gaoling is a large town located within a mountain range in the southern Earth Kingdom. It is home to both the wealthy Beifong family and the Earth Rumble tournaments. An old, well-established city, Gaoling has a spectrum of people residing in it, ranging from the very rich to the very poor. The town remained untouched by the Hundred Year War, due to it not being in a particularly strategic location. This is evidenced by the attitude of many of its residents.[16]

Chin Village Edit
Main article: Chin Village

Chin Village is a small town located on the cliffs of the Earth Kingdom's southwestern coast. It is named for Chin The Great, a warlord and conqueror who nearly conquered the Earth Kingdom. Plains village Edit
Main article: Plains village

Plains village is located in the arid grasslands of the southern Earth Kingdom, to the west of the Si Wong Desert. It is not the most ideal place to live in and is home to several suspicious characters, including Gow, who, along with his gang of thugs, pass off as Earth Kingdom soldiers in order to force the citizens to yield to their will. They often forcefully enlist unwilling citizens into the Earth Kingdom Army and steal from those they consider weak. The town is often forced to live in fear of this band. The citizens of the village seem to harbor a severe hatred for the Fire Nation, and several of its citizens left to fight in the Hundred Year War.

The Lee Family Pig Farm is located outside of this village, and is where a young boy named Lee lives with his parents.[18]

Because of its immense size, the geography of the Earth Kingdom varies tremendously by region. Much of its center is taken up by arid grasslands, and the Si Wong Desert, which dominates the southeast.[37] Its northwest coast is covered with dense pine forests - further south, these are replaced by semitropical deciduous forests. The area near Omashu is fairly mountainous, with small pine thickets and large steppes.[10]

Climate Edit

Each nation of the four nations is influenced by their own distinct, dominant season; and each one is characterized by different climates.

Air Nomads Edit

The Air Nomad's dominant season is autumn. Airbenders are strongest in this season. More Air Nomad children were born during autumn than any other season, all retaining bending abilities. The climate of all the air temples is similar, with a Mediterranean temperate climate. Rains have not been seen in any temple, but it was snowing in the vicinity of the Northern Air Temple.

Water Tribes Edit

Polar climate in Southern Water Tribe.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

The Water Tribe's dominant season is winter. To an effect, more waterbenders are born during winter than any other season and their powers are at their strongest during the season due to the longer nights. In actuality, both polar Tribes experience winter-like weather consistently, with snow falling year-round. The climate of the Northern and Southern Water Tribe is characterized for very low temperatures, typically under 0 °C. They have a polar climate; scarce rainfall and snow and the relative humidity in the air is low.

Earth Kingdom Edit

A day with average temperatures in Ba Sing Se.
RenatablsAdded by Renatabls

The Earth Kingdom's dominant season is spring, the time when several living things on Earth are reborn. To that effect, more earthbenders are born during the spring that any other season and their powers are at their strongest during the springtime. The average temperature of the Earth Kingdom varies greatly due to its vast size. Some areas are warm and wet, such as Foggy Swamp. Many areas are very arid, such as the Si Wong Desert, the hottest and driest place in the world, and the Great Divide. Omashu and Ba Sing Se are more temperate, and polar conditions exist in some parts, such as Kyoshi Island and the Northern Mountains.

Fire Nation Edit

The Fire Nation's dominant season is summer. The power of firebenders are slightly enhanced due to the increase in temperature. Most firebending children are born during the summer. The climate in the Fire Nation is varied, although the most parts of the nation has a tropical and an arid subtropical climate. The Fire Nation has high and average temperatures. There has been some rainfall seen in the Fire Nation in the episode "The Southern Raiders". Because of a warm and humid climate, the Fire Nation is home to a variety of native flora and fauna, though most of the main islands have been stripped of their forests and now consist of grassy plains.

Demography Edit

People of different nations in the Fire Nation Capital.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

Air Nomads Edit

After the Air Nomad Genocide, conducted by the Fire Nation, that resulted in the complete extinction of the Air Nomads, and the fauna that lived in the air temples with them, the population of the Air Nomads was small compared to the other nations, even to the Water Tribes. The sole known survivor of the massacre was Aang, the Avatar.[36]

Water Tribes Edit

The population of the Water Tribes is relatively small, and is the third most populous nation. Because of the War, the Southern Water Tribe was driven to the brink of extinction through a series of raids;[8] hence the Northern Water Tribe is the most populous Water Tribe.

Earth Kingdom Edit

The Earth Kingdom is the most populous nation in the world of Avatar; Ba Sing Se, its capital, is one of the most populous cities. Due to the fact that the Earth Kingdom has the largest expanse of territory, it is an ethnically diverse country, with wide variance in customs between different provinces and tribes. The Earth Kingdom has not suffered a heavy loss of life or any sort of extinction in civilization or earthbenders.

Fire Nation Edit

The Fire Nation is the second largest nation in the world in terms of population and area. The nation has suffered some loss of life because of the Hundred Year War, but not so many as the other nations, who have been victims of more numerous attacks and genocides. The population of the Fire Nation is mostly concentrated in urban centers, though smaller settlements, villages and towns dot the landscape as well.

Trivia Edit

  • The Fire Nation is situated on a small island but it has highly advanced technology, similar to Japan. Its culture is similar to the imperialist Japanese. The Earth Kingdom, is very big, agrarian, and diverse, just like China. Air Nomad clothes and customs are similar to Tibetans and Central Asians, and residents of the Water Tribes are like the Inuits and Kipchak tribes. The sandbenders are similar to Uyghurs and Outer Mongolians.
  • The world map is similar to our world map, but without the Americas. On the other hand, the Fire Nation is situated in the place where Mesoamerica, which is known for its Mayan and Aztec cultures, used to be. This most likely pertains to the Sun Warriors Ancient City[32] Zuko and Aang discovered.
  • An interesting fact is that although there are four air temples there are only three Air Nomad regions shown on the map; the Northern Air Temple lies on the northern tip of the Earth Kingdom mainland.

  • I want a avatar world globe!!

    • I want it too! xD I've ever wondered if somebody sails from the fire nation islands to the left side, if they'd've gotten to the other side of the map... =x I wonder, if it's not, what's between, what's on the other side of the globe... =x

    • I do remember bryke saying somewhere that the whole world has been discovered, their will be no discovery of "the new world" like in our world's history.

    • That would leave at least a fifth or even a fourth of the planet completely empty...

    • I never heard Bryke comment about this, but I have no reason to believe there's anything besides what has already been shown. It makes sense, given the map shown at the start of the show's credits. Plus if its supposed to be like the 1800s in our world and Korra is like the 1920s, then any "new world" would've been discovered long before.

    • All it would take is a very skilled lavabender, or a very skilled earthbender, or even a fleet of earth/lavabenders and you got yourself a new country.

    • Lavabending is an Avatar-only ability, since it requires earthbending and firebending to control it. Yes, it would take a lot to create a new continent, but I suppose its possible. Kyoshi altered the map when she fought Chin, making a former peninsula into an island. And once for posting a comment is enough, felinoel.

    • Are you saying that Avatars won't contemplate making new continents? Also Kyoshi only broke off a piece, I'm talking about reforming what is currently there.

    • Me too

  • It says that the location of republic city is still unknown, but right after that is whale tail island, so obviously, republic city is ON WHALE TAIL ISLAND! I think.

  • Who's up for rollercoster riding in Omashu, you get free stuff in the karts and earth kingdom soldiers take you to Bumi when you reach the bottom. One more time and I get "a cell of my own".How awsome is that!!!

  • I've always wondered about race in this show: Clearly the Earth Kingdom is predominantly Chinese and Korean-ish, while the Fire Nation is usually Japanese (with some weird exceptions of white-looking soldiers). Water Tribe is Inuit, and the Air Nomads are, for the most part, Tibetan and Nepalese. But there are also Indians (Guru Pathik, even down to the accent) and Africans (Rough Rhino Ogodei, who is most certainly black, as well as some Full Moon Bay refugees). Even Pipsqueak, the Duke, and the Mechanist are more Caucasian than Asian, though the world is mostly based off of Asian people and cultures. Is there an explanation of this? I always thought that maybe they were from farther north, in the unexplored Fire Nation-controlled region of the Earth Kingdom, but of course this is speculation. Anyone else's thoughts?

    • Well, its a fantasy world so I guess there isnt really any race per se ~ but, the whole world is very much Asian - especially Chinese influenced. Both the Earth and Fire kingdoms show heavy Chinese influence while the air nomads kind of give off a mix of Tibetan/Nepalese and Shaolin influence. Why do you think the Fire nation is usually Japanese? Culture wise, they show alot more Chinese influence than Japanese. The most Japanese influenced would most likely be the Kiyoshi warriors. The fire nation does very closely resemble WW2 Japan though in its policies towards colonialism, nationalism, and the general invasion of the rest of the Avatar world

    • thank god at least someone knows this show has specific race unlike M night shamamalama who killed the whole thing by throwing a whole bunch of indians

    • There's also Arabic-like traders in the Desert ^_^

    • fire nation have both chinese and Japanese influences. But the firebending have some Indian influences as well.

  • Theoretically speaking, what would happen if someone tried sailing east from the Earth Kingdom to the Fire Nation?

    • They would reach the Fire Nation, according to Bryke,

    • I wonder why there's absolutely no mention of such an attempt in canon, though. Do they think they can't do it that way?

    • Considering what we've seen of Earth Kingdom ships (which appear to be wooden, at least from what we see of the earth kingdom pirate ship.), sailing into the land of fire on wooden vessels probably isn't the best way to go, especially since the Fire Nation would probably have tough defenses on the Western shores, otherwise it would be ridiculously easy for the Earth Kingdom to invade. Also, who says they haven't tried? There are many battles we don't hear about.

    • Their ships are wooden. We see Dai Li ships in Lake Laogai.

    • They would get attacked by the ruthless Fire Nation

  • i think the contenents will have moved, or changed places by the next series. who knows?

    • from that statement, you clearly don't know how plate tectonics work. To move a very small amount, it can take 100-200 years of continuous activity.

    • Oh yes H-Man Havoc, because since this series is so realistic with the bending, the creatures (flying bisons, dragons, badger moles, etc.) and all the spirit world talk, its crazy to think the creators would change up the continents.

    • For one thing, Bryke never did anything similar to this, they tried to stay close to the rules of our world while being creative, such as when Aang made the water pillar in "Sozin's Comet".

    • Avatar Kyoshi moved her home island with serious bending...

  • What about the United Republic?

    • We know little about the United Republic, so information about it will be added when LoK starts or we get even more info. If we get a lot of information, we will need splitting of pages.

      • does Sokka's loopy-cactus-dance-arm-waving-thing* IT'S ON WHALE TAIL ISLAND! ;D
    • for the last time it's not on whale tail island

I have theorized that the United Republic might be located somewhere in the Earth Kingdom, probably near a former Fire Nation Colony.

  • I always figured that the Avatar world was Earth just set back in a 'lost age' sort of like the Hyborian Age from the Conan the Barbarian universe.

I've always set it sometime before the last Ice Age, with Sozin's Comet impacting the earth the cause of the end of the Avatar World. As for justification of the hybrid animals I figured they just evolved into their current forms during the Ice Age. As for the loss of element manipulation either something at the end of this series causes it, or it becomes a forgotten art, lost to the ages.

    • Except it cannot be, as this is based on Asian elements throughout the ages after the Ice Age. Also, humans did not spread all over the world until the Ice Age. Besides, the technology is far too advanced already for it to be in the oats.

    • Hence the whole 'Lost Age' thing. Its not what really happened in our world. But within the fiction it is. A more contemporary example would be the Assassins Creed series, and the 'Those Who Came Before'. Another example would be Middle-Earth if your a fan of The Lord of the Rings.

Essentially its a 'fictional' past that was long forgotten by the time of the 'modern era'.

  • I was working on a D&D version of the worldmap and if the Meridian Distance over surface pole to pole is 12,000 miles, then Ba Sing Sei and the Fire nation capital are on almost opposite sides of the world ( on the same meridian circle - but the fire nation is equatorial) - also meaning the other side of the world is mostly un-mapped (and an ideal location for fleeing airbenders); Ba Sing Sei is about a thousand miles diameter across the outer walls, and Appa flys from the Northern Air temple to the North Pole in two days...a distance of 2000 miles (appa must fly 2000 miles/40 hours=50 miles an hour).

What I'd love to know is where is Commander Zhao's Forward staging post/port where Zuko goes to repair the damage to his ship in episode 3.

    • There is no other side of the world. The map is all there is, it's like maps in the real world; they are flat, but there is nothing on the other side. The creators also confirmed this, as well as the fact that every Airbender died (except Aang).

    • @Olorin The White Yeah, I know they confirmed that the four nations are all there are and that there's nothing on the other side of the world, but it still doesn't make sense. Part of it is that the world would be really tiny, the original poster made this clear. The circumference up there assumes this world is a little over half the size of earth, with the four nations only encompassing one hemisphere. Its a fact that Appa flies from the Northern Air Temple to the North pole in two days, and I feel like 50mph is a generous cruising speed for Appa (he's not exactly a plane, if he went much faster the passengers would have to strap themselves on), and 2000 miles is assuming he's had the minimum amount of sleep (4 hours per night). If the four nations are all there is then the world is far smaller than that, that's really small for a planet, it couldn't be more than a fourth the size of Earth (smaller than our moon). More than that though, the map doesn't look like a map of the world. The poles aren't located at the top like they should be, they are islands with a bit of distance from the actual top of the world, "poles" of the world, which should be frozen over with ice, like the ones on Earth and heck even the one's on Mars. Additionally, even if the world is small, this entire world shares a common language and even a similar cultures. We can't even do that amongst our continents, not to mention our world. Even the foggy swamp people, so isolated that they literally forgot about other the water tribes, speaks in the standard language, albeit with a slight accent. I think its more probable if the the place was just one continent of a much larger world, much like southern Asia/Australia, but more in the center of the world, so the Water nation would receive heavy snowfall and still be covered in glaciers.

  • The World of Avatar is quite smaller than our world or possibly smaller than our moon, I mean...when you look at the world map you can see Ba Sing Se's city boundary. In eye view in the monorail it roughly the size of New York or Chicago or Tokyo (Without the skyscrapers). Ozai and his fleet of Airships capable enough to destroy the Earth Kingdom with the aid of the Sozin's Comet...they're destroying a continent...If you're in real world, you're destroying Asia...the World of Avatar is small, does anybody notice that?

  • How come the watertribe people are very dark-skinned,when they are all at the poles?

  • is it just me, or does the fire nation look like a skull? could you guys give me your opinions of it please?

  • Yeah, it has a relation between real world and avatar world. Fire is japan, Earth is china, Water is North & South Pole, and air nomad is unknown,,,

    • Air Nomad is Tibet, Nepal or Bhutan or a Shaolin Monastery or that mountain region in 2011 Karate Kid movie...if you have watch it? (They should have titled Kung Fu Kid)

    • Earth: Australia, New Zealand, Middle East, Africa, India. Air: Most of Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Eastern Europe Water: Russia, Greenland, Antarctica (Imagine people live there), Canada, Alaska, Finland, Denmark, all those northern cold places Fire: USA, South America, American Islands (Hawaii, etc.), Western Europe (Spain, France, etc.), Northern Mediterranean Countries (Greece, Italy, etc.)

    • @Truce D Jee Yeah,

    • June 25 by an anonymous contributor Yeah! Fire Nation. If this was real, I'd probably be a fire bender, because I was born in the summer. Most fire benders were/are born in the summer.

    • Fire Nation always in my mind was Arabian

  • Wait, Is the Fire Nation supposed to resemble Japan (epecially WWII era)?

    • I think I heard somewhere that the Fire Nation was meant to resemble something of Imperial Japan, although I feel it resembles Nazi Germany much closer.

Fire Lord Sozin had plans to rule the world as acquired Fire Nation territories, much like Adolf Hitler and his conquest of Europe (and most likely the world) for Germany. Zhao even said in "The Blue Spirit" that he (and possibly the rest of the Fire Nation who agree with Ozai) perceives the Fire Nation as the "sons and daughters of fire, the superior element," which fits in perfectly with the Nazis' ideology of Aryan superiority.

    • I almost forgot, the Air Nomad Genocide executed in the early years of the War are reminiscent of the real-world Holocaust.

    • Yeah, ish. But then the USA set an invasion on Afganistan too. So you have to think about that too. I mean, the Fire Nation COULD be Japan but the Fire Nation set an invation on the world(Avatar World). So I guess you could say that the Fire Nation is Japan and USA>

  • So I guess the US is in the fire nation or the earth kingdom. The fire nation is like asia/europe and the air nomads are in asia or africa and in south america. And the water tribe is where it was in the show? Wait... There is no America!!!!

    • The Earth Continent would be like Asia and Europe. The Water Continents would be like Antarctica and Africa. The Air Continents would be like Australia and other small areas like the Caribbean, Indonesia and Greenland. The Fire Continent would best represent the Americas

    • In the series (not in our heads) Fire=Japan (also possibly Korea) even the island looks similar to Japan Air= Tibet, Nepal and other East Indian Countries (such as India) Earth= China and other Asian Countries (Such as Russia and Mongolia) Water= Inuit and other First Nation Tribes. The World of Avatar is probably more related to Race and Culture then Country.

    • The Earth Kingdom would mostly be like Asia and Europe. The Fire Nation would be like USA and Japan. The Air Nomads would be like the Tibian monks. The Water Tribes would possibly be located in the North Pole or the South Pole. But we don't know if there are acual people living in the North Pole or the South Pole.

  • is there like a map that has all this stuff on it, like that labels the different islands and forrests cause that would be cool to know where exactly in the different nations they were

  • Well i think the avatar world is round - it just looks flat because that how all maps are drawn even in this world. and also because their world is just smaller than ours-way smaller...

and am i the only one who thinks that the water tribe culture looks like a mix between the native americans and the people who build igloo's-sorry i dont know how to spell their names...

and the air nomad massacare kinda reminds me of world war two when hilter/sozin were being gready and almost killed off/killed an entier culture...

  • hmmmm the earth kingdom sure is big... wouldn't each nation want to share equal land...

    • I guess it was the geography and the preference of the people. Fire Citizens would want to be near heat and sun, like the volcanoes and equitorial weather of the Fire Continent. Air Nomads would want to be in close proximity of the winds and ever-changing conditions of the mountanous regions of the Air Continents. Water tribesman would want to be near the cold, where their bending is stronger, and where there is a lot of bendable resources. Earth subjects would want to be in the region of the planet where the ground is easy to manipulate and there is always an air of growth and rejuvination. The people couldn't change the geography of the world, so they coped

  • The Avatar World is pretty small. Considering it takes less than a day to get from Ba Sing Se to the Fire Kingdom.

    • Actually, I take that back, they just needed to get to the coast. Nonetheless, it seems small to get from one area to another relatively quickly.

    • And yet when leaving the fire nation; in The Waterbending Scroll, Aang says it will take weeks to get to the North Pole. ^^"

Go-go overpowered Eel hounds that supposedly swim faster than Appa flies. haha

    • Well - assuming the world is round like ours and they're on opposite edges of the map, they might actually be pretty close.

    • it is pretty weird. They take only about a week to get from the South pole to the Southern Air Temple (about a quarter of the distance of the world) but then ait take a number of weeks, (many more than three) to get from there to the Northern Water Tribe. Then later on, after the Day of Black Sun, it takes them almost no timeto get to the Western Air Tempple after the failure of the attack

    • Yeah, I agree.

  • it is flat!
