Forums: War Room → Out of universe information on bending pages

Although it has long been the case that information on this wiki should be written from an in universe point of view, there are times when having out of universe information is needed and/or relevant. The bending pages are a particular example of this, but the out of universe information on those pages is spread throughout the article, often mixed with in universe information, rather than being collected into one particular section. I would therefore like to propose that we create a new section, tentatively titled "Connection", which would contain any information within the article that is considered out of universe and cannot be re-written to make it in universe, much as we have on the fauna pages.

Reading through the bending pages, these are the sections containing the information I believe should be included under this new header (these sections contain the information that needs moving, but not all info within the section will need to be moved):

• Airbending
  • Fighting style

• Earthbending
  • Fighting style
  • Spirituality and earthbending

• Firebending
  • Fighting style
  • Styles

• Waterbending
  • Fighting style

There may be other information I missed that could be included, and other pages where introducing this new section may be necessary. Your thoughts? HAMMEROFTHOR 22:17, August 4, 2012 (UTC)

I believe that all of the bending's "Fighting Style" should be in the "Connection" group, but I do not agree with everything:

1. Airbending: Yes, we should incorporate the "Fighting Style" section in a "Connection" but not the actual techniques since we can accurately decribe these using in-universe style.

2. Firebending: Same as airbending, but the "Styles" header should really just be grouped with the "Fighting Style" then into the "Connection" heading.

3. Earthbending: Spirituality should be kept in-universe; therefore, it should not be added to connections. I know you put it on the list because it mentions Hun Gar but I believe that Hun Gar is irrelevant in this section (as a matter of fact, I think the whole paragraph should be rewritten). Also, if we add Earthbending's spirituality to the "Connection" section we would have to do that with all other bending styles and that is just not needed. As for fighting style, I agree.

4. Waterbending: Same as airbending.

I believe adding a "Connection" heading would be beneficial for games. For example, hide and explode is similar to hide and go seek; Pai Sho is like a variety of board games; pro-bending is like boxing, dodgeball, and more; and there are many more games.WEFAang (wall • contribs) 23:39, August 4, 2012 (UTC)

I fully agree with this proposal. I think that all relevant out of universe should be included, if possible, in bending articles. As for the game pages, those points sound like they can more easily be stated in trivia sections, as there is not as much to write about as describing the inspiration behind a bending art. --AvatarRokus Ghost (Message me • Read my fanon) 23:49, August 4, 2012 (UTC)

@WEFAang: I meant only parts of each section, not the whole section (I added some clarification to my proposal). I think some of the earthbending spirituality stuff has relevance, particularly the parts on what the different styles embody and their relation to earthbending.
