The Fire Nation is one of the world's four nations. It is an absolute monarchy led by the Fire Lord. Geographically, the continent is located on the planet's equator in the western hemisphere, and is composed of several islands, and therefore is an archipelago. Its capital is simply known as the Fire Nation Capital. The Fire Nation is home to most known firebenders.

The Fire Nation is the second-largest nation in the Avatar World in terms of population and area; second to the Earth Kingdom. The Fire Nation's economy is the most powerful in the world, with a strong industrial sector and extensive technological developments. It is also known for its large, powerful military.

Regardless of previous boundaries, the Military of the Fire Nation was engaged in an imperialistic century long war with the other three nations during the life of Avatar Aang. The ruler directly after the conclusion of the Hundred Year War, Fire Lord Zuko, used Fire Nation resources to help rebuild the world,[1] start the Harmony Restoration Movement,[2] and eventually create the United Republic of Nations. The Fire Nation Capital is guarded by the Great Gates of Azulon,[3] named after the grandfather of Zuko and Azula, Fire Lord Azulon.

Seventy years after the end of the Hundred Year War, the Fire Nation still plays a role in world affairs. A representative from the Fire Nation holds a position on the United Republic Council that helps govern Republic City and the United Republic in general.[4]

Appearance Edit

ThailogAdded by Thailog

Members of the Fire Nation tend to have black or brown hair, amber, gold, brown, or gray eyes, and pale skin, though exceptions such as Ty Lee, Piandao, Shoji, On Ji, and Hide do exist. Additionally, in terms of facial features, their eyes are often smaller and longer in shape along with higher nose bridges than members of other nations. There is a prevalence of distinct cheekbones among the population as well. However there are also certain individuals with exceptions to these features.

Older men tend to sport large beards, mustaches, and sideburns, while younger men are usually clean-shaven, or wear small mustaches and goatees. Women usually wear their hair back, though for special occasions it may be piled on top of the head, or wrapped around a support. Female members of the aristocracy also tend to have long, pointed, well-manicured finger nails, which resemble the long gold "nails" ancient Chinese empresses wore. Almost all citizens wear top-knots, often held by a decorative top-knot piece indicating their socioeconomic rank. Nobles and politicians tend to ornament their hair with a two pronged, flame-styled piece; Zuko and Azula wear three pronger flames, and the Fire Lord wears a gold, five-pronged piece. A normal citizen might wear a one pronged piece, as shown by Sokka when he wore his disguise. Their hairstyles are fashioned most prominently off of traditional Han Chinese styles.

Members of the army wear red and black uniforms that resemble ancient Chinese plated armor. The armor also may have gold trim or emblems on them. Traditional colors worn throughout the nation range from deep reds to darker browns, grays, and blacks, with occasional white, or pink. Many citizens wear shoulder spikes, the amount designating social standing, ordinary civilians wear one, nobles wear two, and the Fire Lord wears three, though there are exceptions to these rules. It is observed that aesthetically, the clothing, architecture, and general visual style of the Fire Nation resembles that of the Chinese Qin, Tang, and Han dynasty period. There are also hints of feudal Japanese fashion influences.

National emblem Edit

Fire Nation Emblem.

The national emblem of the Fire Nation is a stylized, teardrop-shaped flame forked into a trident of three tongues that taper upward to a point. The insignia is primarily displayed on its flag, uniforms, on the pennants of Fire Navy warships, the sides of their various vehicles of war, and as marking of Fire Nation territory. It seems that the Fire Nation Royal Family or certain higher members wear the emblem in their top-knots. Azula, Fire Lord Sozin, Fire Lord Azulon, Avatar Roku, Fire Lord Ozai, Fire Lord Zuko, Lu Ten and Ursa have been seen wearing them.

The Fire Nation flag is a triangle-shaped banner with the stylized flame insignia at its center. Six thin stripes extend from the slanted edge.

Fire Nation currency consists of gold, silver, and bronze pieces of varying shapes and sizes used by Fire Nation citizens to purchase goods and services, and are fashioned with the national emblem situated in the center.

Based on the red Fire Lord's seal on all the wanted posters, Fire Nation is written in Chinese as 烈火國 , literally "Raging fire country". Coincidentally, the term "烈火" is the Chinese way of writing "Agni", the Hindu god of fire.

Geography Edit

Map of the Fire Nation, excluding several small islands.
TLaneAdded by TLane

The Fire Nation is located on an archipelago of tropical volcanic islands, many still active, that give the nation an unlimited source of power. Because of a warm and humid climate, the Fire Nation is home to a variety of native flora and fauna, though most of the main islands have been stripped of their forests and now consist of grassy plains. Few travel to the Fire Nation, and no nation has ever mounted an invasion against it, although in the War's later years, the Earth Kingdom planned to do so on the Day of Black Sun, but was stopped by the Fire Nation beforehand due to the fall of Ba Sing Se;[5] a later invasion attempt mounted by the Avatar and a band of supporters failed.[6]

The population of the Fire Nation is mostly concentrated in urban centers, though smaller settlements, villages, and towns dot the landscape as well. The capital city is on the largest island, situated inside the crater of a large volcano.[3] There are also many industrial establishments where weapons, tanks and warships are built to support the war effort. However, it is logical to say that said establishments were dismantled when Zuko was crowned as the new Fire Lord, in order to promote a peaceful healing of the world.

Natural resources Edit

The Fire Nation employs highly skilled metalworkers and blacksmiths who make use of iron and other metals to engender their fortresses and warships. Utilizing coal dug out by prisoners slaving in mines, they are able to power massive furnaces. According to audio commentary, the initial drive for their attempts for expansion was industrializing and having a greater need for resources, in itself a staple of imperialism.

Government Edit

Government system: Autocracy

Head of state: Fire Lord

Religious authority: Great Sage and Council of Fire Sages

The Fire Nation is ruled with an iron fist by the latest in a long line of firebenders, with the most recent leader being Fire Lord Zuko. The Fire Nation's political system is autocracy, that waged a century-long imperialist war against the other three nations of the world; the stated goal of which was to create a planet wide empire. They were not above employing genocide to accomplish this goal, as they eliminated the entire nation of Air Nomads, and drove the Southern Water Tribe to the brink of extinction. The idea of an absolute monarchy is reinforced by Azula's stating that "true power, the divine right to rule, is something you're born with".[5]

However, the Fire Nation was not always the tyrannical, militaristic embodiment it is today. A millennia ago, in its earliest years, a council of sages led the Fire Nation who, among several other national interests, were heavily invested in philosophy and spirituality, much like that of the monastic Air Nomad race. The lead sage was known as the "Fire Lord" due to his high level firebending powers as well as his deep spiritual affinity with the element. Over the years, one lead sage chose to sever ties with the remaining sages and sought to be the sole ruler of the Fire Nation. Now led by the Great Sage, the sages were regulated primarily to spiritual matters but nonetheless still retained some political power over the Nation, with tensions between the two sects increasing with every generation.

ThailogAdded by Thailog

The dispute finally reached a state of equilibrium during the course of Sozin's rise to the throne and reign. When still alive during Sozin's rule, the sages remained loyal to Avatar Roku and kept watch over his sanctuary. But following the death of the Avatar, the sages, after three generations, finally submitted under the Fire Lord's rule and were forced to serve only him, counseling him on spiritual affairs.[7]

Now under the servitude of Fire Lord Zuko, the current Fire Sages are the last of their kind, aging remnants of an era long past when spiritual matters were placed in high importance over military ambition.

Following the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai at the hands of Avatar Aang, Fire Lord Zuko rose to power and ended the century-long war. He has dedicated his rule towards rebuilding the four nations in a new era of peace.[1]

Industry Edit

In compliance with its former goal of global conquest, the Nation used to be engaged in shipbuilding, shaping metal and manufacturing weapons including arrows, spear, shields, swords and knives. Aside from this cruder range of weaponry, the Fire Nation stands as the most technologically advanced of the nations, as its inherent knowledge of combustion gives them several Industrial-Age technologies such as advanced metallurgy, tanks, rudimentary explosives like "blasting jelly", sophisticated catapults, siege drills, and coal-powered ironclad warships. Some of these innovations were commissioned by extorting an expatriate Earth Kingdom inventor, the mechanist.

Education Edit

ThailogAdded by Thailog

The Fire Nation expresses a formal education system which overall is quite similar to real-life school systems. High class public schools can be found on the outer islands, which equate to the upper class suburbs of the Fire Nation. Students in certain schools begin the educational process as soon as they begin firebending, or for non-benders, as soon as they begin walking. Subjects including history, music, etiquette, warfare, and firebending are taught to the students by various teachers. However, the educational system works also as a "mind-molding" process, causing students to develop a strong sense of nationality and loyalty to the Fire Lord. Teachers maintain rigid discipline and order and refuse to teach the students the art of dance or any form of self-expression. In addition, censorship and propaganda can be found in articles within history books e.g. the genocide of the Air Nomads.[8]

Culture Edit

The Fire Temple, where Avatar Roku studied.
The BosAdded by The Bos

The appearance of the Fire Nation is based on fire, naturally. Like the other nations, it is based on its elemental color, in this case, red. The majority of the buildings are made of stone. They also have red pagoda-style roofs favored by the Fire Nation. Fire Nation symbols are often put on important or nice buildings for decoration and inside it is common for a picture of Fire Lord Ozai to be kept in an important, visible place. Roads are well-built, neat ones, mostly straight, heading towards the destination, which suits the Fire Nation's ruler's personality - global domination and striving to do that. They hardly ever have bumps in and are made of neat stone slotted in place.

Children are taught that the Fire Nation is the greatest civilization that has ever existed and that the War is its way of sharing its greatness, and that Fire Lord Ozai and his family are great people who are helping the world out. This has caused a cult of personality to build up around the Fire Lord, military, and aristocracy, who are seen as bringing the benefits of Fire Nation culture to the other nations.

The Fire Nation oath is a characteristic and important cultural element, demonstrated by its teaching to children in schools with demureness, and recited thoughtfully.[8] The oath was written at the beginning of the War, and commissioned by Fire Lord Sozin. It's titled "The March to Civilization".[9]

Many names of Fire Nation citizens utilize harsh consonants and letter "Z", including Zuko, Ozai, Azula, Sozin, Zhao, Azulon, Kuzon, etc. Though interestingly enough, Piandao does mention to Sokka that there are "a million Lees" when aiding him in choosing an alias.[10]

Customs Edit

Fire Nation society places a great emphasis on respect and honor, especially towards the nobility and elders; the concept of the famed Agni Kai stems from these beliefs. Should one be honored enough to be in the presence of a member of the Royal Family, the person needs to prostrate themselves in respect or risk being challenged to an Agni Kai to avenge the disrespected Royal's honor. Upon coming into contact with an elder or superior, it is polite to bow down. Unlike in other parts of the world, this bow consists in placing a hand in a straight fashion with the other placed underneath it vertically.[8] This represents the superior standing with one below him, bowing. Also when receiving an order in the Fire Nation by a superior it is common to not bow, but make the hand symbol. Bowing is required upon greeting to one, when something nice has happened, after business, and leaving. This might be a reference to the practice of unquestionable respect for elders and superiors in India and China.

Likely as a result of the cultural upheavals during the War, women in the Fire Nation are given more freedom than in the other Nations, and are even able and sometimes encouraged to join the police and Homeland Defense Force.

Foods Edit

The diet of its citizens consists of noodles, rice, cabbage, tea and leechi nuts. The people are also known for having a taste for foods of a spicier fare, as they enjoy flaming fire flakes, fire gummies, sizzle-crisps, and fire cakes. The tea most commonly drunk in the Fire Nation is spiced tea.

Cultural festivals Edit

Puppets and masks.
OmnibenderAdded by Omnibender

The "Fire Days Festival" is a traveling street fair in Fire Nation towns and villages, including those situated in former Earth Kingdom territory. Its participants wear stylized hand-carved wooden masks similar to that of Kabuki theater masks, and merchants vendor a wide variety of trinkets and local snacks. The festival's attractions include puppet shows, fireworks, firebending jugglers and magicians, and overall displays of individual or group bending prowess. As illustrated in its cultural festivals, the Fire Nation employs propaganda to indoctrinate a sense of nationalism and loyalty to the Fire Lord, cult of personality, in its citizens from the earliest age possible; a popular attraction cast Ozai as a hero in a children's puppet show. It was during one of these festivals that Team Avatar met Chey, and eventually Jeong Jeong.[11]

During the summer months around August, numerous "Fire Lily Festivals" spring up around the Fire Nation to celebrate the flower's blooms, famed as a symbol of fiery passion, and persist throughout their short blooming season.

Hama collected a few Fire Nation puppets that look similar to the "Fire Days Festival" ones.[12]

Season Edit

Each nation of the four nations is influenced by their own distinct, dominant season. The Fire Nation's season is Summer. Firebenders' powers are slightly enhanced due to the increase in temperature. Most firebending children are born during the summer.

Military Edit

RenatablsAdded by Renatabls

The Fire Nation military is the strongest of the four nations. Using a fiery comet that greatly enhanced their powers, they succeeded in wiping out the Air Nomads early in the War. Though the Fire Nation fought on two fronts against the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom, they still maintained the upper hand. As the War dragged on, it became clear that the Fire Nation would eventually win if the Avatar did not intervene. The Water Tribe did not have the military might to directly challenge the Fire Nation, and the vast Earth Kingdom had lost its last great military stronghold to the Fire Nation.[5]

Army Edit

ThailogAdded by Thailog

The Fire Nation Army is comprised of both normal foot soldiers, who normally wield spears, swords, and shields, and firebenders. Their cavalry ride komodo rhinos. These creatures are a mix between a large rhinoceros and a komodo dragon, and have three horns like a Triceratops and a long whip-like tail. The Fire Nation also has units of metal tanks. These tanks are heavily armored and equipped with fire ports (to allow the crew to fire projectiles, ranging from fireballs produced by firebending to giant grappling hooks).[13]

The act of dressing up prisoners of war as faux soldiers to provide fodder was a tactic used by the ancient Mongolians and some Chinese warlords.[14] One of the generals suggested sacrificing a novice division of troops to provide a distraction,[15] an act used by various military leaders (from both the West and the East) throughout history.

Yu Yan Archers Edit

Main article: Yu Yan Archers

The Yu Yan Archers are Colonel Shinu's highly skilled unit of archers, and are, according to Zhao, "capable of pinning a fly to a tree from one hundred yards away without killing it". They are so skilled that they succeeded in overwhelming and capturing Aang, the Avatar, though he subsequently escaped from custody.[16]

Navy Edit

The Fire Nation Navy border guard ships firing at Aang and his friends.
RenatablsAdded by Renatabls

The Fire Nation's navy comprises coal-powered ironclad warships. In addition to its sturdy properties, the Fire Nation's use of metallurgy to remove impurities from the metal ensures that earthbenders cannot damage their ships with their powers. These vessels serve many purposes, from ferrying and disembarking troops to providing bombardment with their catapults to creating blockades.

Captured earthbenders were forced into labor to work on a mid-ocean shipyard. Knowing that they couldn't bend the metal of the rig, many of the captured earthbenders lost their will to fight.[17]

The Fire Nation's navy is very powerful and has no equal; Admiral Zhao laid siege on the Northern Water Tribe with hundreds of ships, and the Fire Nation certainly has many more. However, almost all of that fleet was destroyed when Aang became the physical incarnation of the Ocean Spirit, leaving only a few survivors to retreat.[18]

The shoulder spikes on Fire Navy uniforms were eventually removed due to their tendencies to get stuck on things.[19]

Azula's ship Edit

Water SpoutAdded by Water Spout

Compared to Zuko's ship, Azula's ship is bigger, faster, and newer. Under Azula's command, the ship is guarded by members of the Royal Procession - an elite group of firebenders dressed in unique armor serving to protect Azula and hunt down Zuko and Iroh, though they turn out to be no match for either of them. This ship is particularly unique for having a 3-spiked prow, and a pagoda tower.[20] The ship was not seen again after Azula abandoned it to pursue the Avatar on land with Mai and Ty Lee.[21] However, it recently reappeared as Azula and Zuko's means of returning home to the Fire Nation.[22]

The Southern Raiders Edit

Main article: Southern Raiders

The Southern Raiders are comprised of an elite force of vessels and soldiers tasked with launching the numerous raids on the Southern Water Tribe. Their insignia is a Sea raven and their uniforms are slightly different from conventional Fire Nation armor, as they are mostly black and consist of a helmet with bird-like ornaments. Their flagship is fairly advanced, with an unusually large conning tower. The goal of the Southern Raiders is to eliminate all waterbenders from the Southern Water Tribe, as well as stealing supplies for the Fire Nation. These raiders are presumably the soldiers who captured all of the waterbenders prior to the show's beginning.[23]

Air Force Edit

Lady LostrisAdded by Lady Lostris

The Fire Nation is the only one of the four nations that has developed military flying machines: War Balloons and airships. The Fire Nation acquired a War Balloon, a hot air balloon designed by the mechanist, an Earth Kingdom inventor who the Fire Nation had pressed into service designing weapons and technology. As stated by War Minister Qin, "This defeat is the gateway to many victories."[13] It was later revealed that the Fire Nation had constructed many more war balloons which are now fueled by firebenders, as well as several massive metal airships.[6] These airships float using large fuel cells on the bottom of the hull, and have dozens of small platforms from which firebenders launch fire at enemies. In the four-episode part series finale, Sozin's Comet, Phoenix King Ozai planned to harness the comet's power to lead a massive fleet of airships to completely burn the Earth Kingdom to the ground. This attempt was stopped by Sokka, Suki, and Toph, along with a little help from Avatar Aang.[24]

The drill Edit

The drill.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

This siege engine is a massive drill, designed to breach the Outer Wall of Ba Sing Se.[25] The drill was originally modeled by the mechanist and took over two years to construct. As large as a village, it houses an entire brigade of Fire Nation engineers, who are needed to make repairs and clean out pipelines. The drill is composed of two moving parts which are connected by a series of braces. It works by tearing chunks of stone from structures and grinding them down, dispensing them into water and channeling them out the rear. The drill was successful in breaching the wall, but was stopped when Aang and Katara teamed up to weaken outer layer of braces. Aang then delivered a final blow to the drill from the exterior, causing the structure to fall apart from the inside out.

The drill was also accompanied by a fleet of tank-like threaded vehicles with catapults, but these were quickly destroyed by Ba Sing Se's Terra Team.[25]

  • The perfect real life location for Fire Nation would be Hawai!!

  • hm, hm.

there is no article on a Fire Nation Tank.

    'ts a bit surprising.

    🐙

  • I always thought that Piandao saying there were a lot of people with the name 'Lee' was a reference to real life. Lee is the most common surname in the world, and it suits the Avatar universe more than the most common first name, which is Mohammed.

  • Did they get penalized for starting a 100 year war

  • They have gorgeous people

  • Fire is the superior element or stating that FN is the greatest civilization ever = reference to the under heaven <TIAN XIA> system of ancient China... which put great emphasys on Chinese culture, glory and stating that chinese civilization/culture is ALWAYS superior, and that foreigners NEED to adopt chinese traditions, costumes and way of life or else you would be considered a barbarian, a savage and such... and these thoughts existed way before the dawn of europe as strong civilizations, I hope this helps you guys in understanding who is the true China there... -fnsuport-

    • I don't think fire is the greatest element. I think all the elements have its greatness and its weakness.

Though I do agree with you that FN is based on China

  • I personally think that Fire Nation is mostly influenced by China but to some extent, Japan as well. The whole Japanese culture (examples: clothes, food, traditions, language, writing) is heavily influenced by the Chinese.

Firebending is based on chinese martial arts (so are all the bending styles). Zuko uses the dual swords not the katanas. Dual Swords originated from China.

The whole avatar world uses chinese characters.

The clothes of the Fire Nation greatly resembles the Han Dynasty Clothes.

The celebrations are like Chinese New Year. The food, the music, the show with the dragons.

The colour red is the main colour of FN and also China. China's flag is mostly red. Chinese New Years .. the whole celebration is red. The envelopes given out, red. Red means luck, celebration, happiness, loyalty and beauty. The red symbolises the sun that means life and power (see the connection?). It also symbolises fire which means warmth and celebration in China.

Also ... In the ancient world of china ... chinese use to refer themselves as the ancestors of dragons. Dragons and phoenix were soo important that the Emperors and empresses embroided them onto their clothes. Dragons for Emperors and Phoenix for Empresses.

The military is kinda like Japan. A midgety country who thinks it can rule the world because they are just pro in their own mind.

    • It's Japan. The Hundred Great War signifys World War II. The Fire nation signifys the Empire of Japan. Fire Lord Ozai is Emperor Hirohito of Japan. The Fire Nation is located at the west of the Avatar World Map. Japan is located west of the US. The three other nations are the allies which the air nomads aka the Polish had been conquered by the Fire nation/ Axis Forces. The other allies are trying to liberate the world from the grip of the Axis forces and end WWII...

    • I actually agree with the Anonymous Contributor. Much of Japanese culture is derived from Chinese culture. The weaponry is distinctly related to Wudangquan and Shaolin; Zuko's dual blades are clearly Chinese fashioning. The clothing of the Fire Nation also achingly resembles Han Dynasty Chinese clothing, not Japanese clothing. Why? Because the clothing is tied differently, and there are different articles. For example, the Japanese did not wear the vest-like strip of cloth tied down underneath the sash. They wore their haori OVER their obi. See Ursa's dress: that odd vest-like strip of cloth? That's Chinese. She did not wear a yukata OR a kimono. The sleeves are also cut differently. Furthermore the decorative armor of the ancient Chinese is more similar to the Fire Nation. However, both the Chinese and the Japanese used flexible bamboo armor to fight their average battles, as plate armor is cumbersome. To add to my point, the Fire Nation hairstyles are distinctly Chinese. The Japanese men shaved their heads, remember. Chinese men stilled tied their hair up, but they did not shave any part of their head (unless they were children).

Militaristically, neither GhostAgent247 nor Anon are wrong. The Fire Nation military is empowered with visions of Imperial Japan and, to an extent, Maoist China, with visions of superiority. And since when did the "West" come in here? Technically, China is to the WEST of the US as well. Japan is nestled right next to China.

The most distinctly Japanese group here are the Kyoshi warriors.

It really annoys me to no end when the Asian cultures are confused. JUST BECAUSE the West finally reopened the ports of China during Manchurian rule, upon which Earth Kingdom clothing is clearly based, does NOT mean Chinese fashion did not change. In fact, it changed very abruptly with the introduction of Manchurian style, which is what everyone assumes Chinese people ALWAYS wore. Manchurian styles reflect a more heavily Mongolian influence. Prior to Manchurian rule under the Qing dynasty, Han fashion, off of which Japanese fashion is derived, was standard. Has anyone ever watched Disney's Mulan?

    • And to clear up confusion, the last part of my "rant" was not directed at GhostAgent247, with whom I agree wholly concerning the Fire Nation's military principles (moreover, he didn't discuss Chinese fashion); however, the amount of cultural confusion on here (Chinese fashion vs. Japanese fashion) is a little daunting (see below comments).

China was the motherland of Asia for quite a while due to its access to a vast melting pot of resources. This is where the Fire Nation more readily resembles Japan: they had to conquer other nations to get what materials they needed--again, the military took care of that for them. But holistically the cultural and fashion styles of the FN are most reminiscent of those in the Chinese culture, and that's mostly why I agree with the very first anonymous contributor in this chain.

    • I agree with the anons ... It is true that it's similar to Japan in the ways of military .. but the rest is Chinese.

    • FN is China SPECIALLY its military, its army being parallel to Qin ShiHuangDi awesome army, only merged with other techs and 10x more people. FN uses numbers a lot, pwn everyone and it’s the prettiest parallel to China in the series. I must thank the heavens that you made right comments and said the truth about FN/China culture and aspects most people just DENY due to bias/hatred towards Chinese people!! –fnsuport-

    • People needs to reserch more about china's past, specially about clothing, weaponry and ways of thought BEFORE comparing FN to Japan... saying that FN is Japan because of need for resources is total BS... in todays extremely developed and resources-hungry China <does it ring a bell?> she buys from most countries her raw material... but if we were in different days/political scenario she would just invade and pillage every nation go get what she wants... saying that FN is Japan because of the war is the same as saying that German was always Nazi, Russia always communist or China since from yellow emperor days [about 2500BC] was the Maoist goose-stepping soldiers of our 21 century ¬¬

    • GhostAngent247 ... THE WORLD IS FRICKEN ROUND ... O.O THERE'S LIKE NO WEST OR EAST OR WATEVER BECAUSE ITS ROUND!!!! ppl these days .. dont know if the world is round ... that is just shows how humanity is like going damn down.

And wat does US have to do with anything? When did it become the center point of Earth? You're american i bet ...

repeat: the world is damn round ...

    • GhostAgent247

from the comment above ... not being racist that you're american .. just the fact you think that US is the centre of the world O.o

    • ^ Hey I'm from the United States, and I am insulted by that. America is not by default the United States of America. It means of as in part of America, not all of America. So don't call him American. By you saying he is acting like his country is the center of the world, and then referring to it as America like it's the only part of that side of the world that matters, don't you imply the same thing? What about South America, Central America, and Canada isn't part of North America? It's the United States, not America. And not all people from the United States are egotistical like that!

However, the United States may very well be the center of the world. ;)

    • US is part of America right? US is in the same geographic location of America. I know that you guys arent ALL egotistic but GhostAgent is showing it by claiming that Japan is the west of US which could also MEAN America since America is in the same geographic location as the US.

I'm from a country who plays puppy dog to the US (though my nationality is different from Western) .. so I would know about egotistic people.

    • Yes the US is part of but not all America. So when people use American to describe the United States, it implies it as at least the center of the Americas. Do you see what happens there?

Now I was not really insulted. Actually I was half trolling to be honest. But you were being kind of hypocritical. Had you referred to it as the US it would not have been. But there is no country called "America" so yeah... I think you get the point.

    • Call me lazy or watever .. but the reason i used the term 'Americans' is because .. 'citizen of the US' is too long for me. We do refer each other as European, Asian. Usually people call the US citizens Americans because its easier.

And United States of America ... ? Americans. .. United States of Americans O.o

    • From the US

You don't even need citizen just say from the US wherever you would say American That's 9 letters. You can't type 9 letters instead of 8? Oh two extra spaces? Boo-hoo!

    • It seems your complaining that I dont respect the US. You do know that I got offended by the comment: US is the centre of the world. For me ... I think all the countries in the world has bad or good points.

If you really want me to ...

Good Points of US: economy strongest, military is pro, epic pizza hut food

Bad Points: war, Atomic Bomb on Japan, domination and starting wars on smaller countries.

My opinion: All countries have good and bad.

Why are we even fighting over some mere wording?

    • I told you I was half trolling in that original reply I left here, so I wasn't completely serious when I said that. This especially applies to the center of the world comment which was meant as a joke, hence the face at the end of it. And for the record, the US economy is not so good these days, although to be fair I guess it's still better than many other countries.

The only thing I was serious about was the wording makes you seem hypocritical. I never said that you don't respect the US. It's just you call him out for thinking his country is the center of the world, and then refer to that as American which is a term that makes the US seem like it's the center of the world. Had you worded it as from the US instead of American, there would not have been the same hypocritical implications whether you meant it or not.

    • Guys!! Calm down ... you guys fighting over about the US and other countries.

This is a cartoon .. appreciate it or something ^^ .. just adding: this is a cartoon from the US

P ... just appreciate the work
    • You're the one going crazy over some wording. What do you want? Till I bow down to you? And I told you ... aren't you being hypocritical too? Going crazy about a word.

    • You two .... 1337BenderBoss and ... Anonymous Contributor .. stop fighting over this ..

This post is about China and Japan anyways .. not the US or the world is round.

    • I'm not going crazy. I'm just pointing out what it implies. And when your words imply the very thing you are accusing something else of, well that comes off as hypocritical whether you meant it or not. Sorry.

You can choose to fix it, or ignore it. But don't take it out on me just because you don't want to type an extra letter. All you had to do was refer to the US by a proper name or abreviation instead of as just America and it wouldn't come off like that. That's all I'm saying.

    • Not defending or attacking... But asking:

Why would you care so much? I don't even understand your logic that the word America means the centre of the world. Majority of the people use it. Even my family who lives in Canada uses Americans to refer to the US. My friends, family .. everyone say you guys are Americans.

    • American*

    • It's because referring to the US as America or from the US as American implies that it is all of America when it is not. It paints the rest of the two American continents as unimportant because by default the United States is being called America as if it was all of America. It adds to the egotistical stereotype the United States already has about propping itself up. Now many people do this, and I've referred to the US America myself. But it does give the implication of the US being bigger/more important/better than everything else, which is kind of what you were accusing that other guy of doing in the first place.

As for why I care, I'm just responding to your responses. I've mostly just been trying to explain myself to you over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...

    • Your own continent is North America. Not America. Your country is United States of America. It's why we call you guys American because it's a shorten form. If I was to refer to the whole continent I would say North America or South America.

    • Yes but there is more than one American continent like South America? Look the point is it implies a certain thing that you were also accusing that person of. Just say US. That's two letters and shorter. Or you can continue to be politically incorrect... I don't care anymore. If you don't want to listen do what you want. Have fun.

    • Just read the very interesting and confusing convo that happened earlier.

1337BenderBoss ... Anon Cont. mentioned South America already in the post before yours. You also accused Anon. that it's politically incorrect. As far as I'm concern .. it's not even politics. It's a word that everyone use to refer to the US. You seem to be trying to making you're own opinion into facts as well.

Also .. due to the time you're on shouldn't you be asleep by now? You mentioned you're from US. The time zone at your place will be night and if it was very early Friday .. you're either one old person who has nothing better to do but go on cartoon sites in the morning or a student who goes on the computer every morning before school due to the obsession of technology. Could also be a serious gamer too ... BUT that's my guess ... feel free to contradict.

Well back on topic. I also think that Fire Nation might be based on China. The red colour is definitely there. The buildings also look Chinese. Also the food is similar to Chinese food. I don't exactly see them eating sushi.

  • Fire Nation.

Long ago before the Hundred Year War begun. Before the conclusion of Air Nomads happened.

    Fire Lord Sozin.

Plans to conquer the world. In his order, Fire Nation raids the others nation, especially Air Nomads. The war begun.

Waterbender reach the extinction in Southern Water Tribe. Airbenders lost their existence in the World... Almost forever. Few families are raided. Son lost his mother. Daughter lost her father. Jet lost his beloved family.

    Fire Lord Zuko.

Ended the war by make connection with Avatar Aang. Join him. Ended the war. Gathers all nation to a nation, Republic City. Then, he passed away.

    Bolin and Mako.

Multi-cultural family. Lost their parents and became urchin in the street. By firebenders. Mako is firebenders, too.

    Amon.

Non-bender. Lost his father by firebenders. Who're wrong? Fire Nation and their firebender? Or Amon?

    • Fire Nation. The old call the young to fight. The young die in battle. Like for eg: American govt sends US Marines to fight the Al-Qaeda in Pakistan. Many american lives were lost. Same scenario from my point of view.

  • There is one thing I don't get about the Fire Nation and the Water Tribe. Since the Fire Nation is tropical, wouldn't they have darker skin? Also, shouldn't the Water Tribe have lighter skin?

    • Good point. I actually have no clue.

    • The Inuits, whom the Water Tribe is derived from, were dark-skinned. If we were to get scientific about it, the ozone is thinner toward the poles: hence, the need for more melanin production.

Also, Chinese/Japanese people live in tropical/subtropical zones, but they're not necessarily dark-skinned. It honestly depends on exposure to sunlight, genes, and weather conditions.

    • Maybe FN people tend to tan easily [sun and tropical country] but maybe they avoid the maximum they can of sun exposure... probabbly due to tradition, since in ancient China light skin was prefered since it means you dont need to work a lot at the fields and get tan. <this later spread to the rest of Asia, like Korea and Japan>

  • I look like like a fire bender

  • Do you think the fire nation will still be an absolute monarchy with a fire lord? Or do you think the fire lord doesn't exist anymore? Or perhaps the fire lord exists but simply as a figure head?

  • The fire nation was the only part of theATLA mythos that bugged me. Earth supports, water and air are essential for life, but only fire is inherently destructive.

What supreme being in his right mind would make a whole nation of people who control fire? Its just asking for trouble. In a nation full of people with only the power to destroy its obvious the majority of them are going to be mentally unstable pyromaniacs prone to violence.

    • Wow this is wrong. Fire isn't just destuction, it's light, warmth, safty, and can make water and food capable of being ingested without making you sick. And the other elements can be just a destructive, A Hurricane or Tornado for air, A Tidal wave or flood for water, and Landslide or sinkhole and even a volcano for earth.

Firebenders haven't proved to be any more unstable or prone to violence in general than any other group, and by definition most are not pyromaniacs, the term pyromaniac is tossed around without real understanding of what it means.

    • One who gets off on seeing things burn. Like the majority of people in the fire nation military. And I'm not saying fire is all bad, but a nation full of people who control it is.

    • Where do you get the idea that majority of people in the fire nation military "get off" by seeing burn? I'be never seen anyone in the show "get off" by seeing burns.

The Firenation wasn't the way it was becasue of the abilty to control fire. For the majority of it's exsistance it lived in peace with the other nation. And how is it any worse than a nation of peopel who can suck people into the earth, or destroy the foundation of a building. Or one that can control you movments? I'm sorry but you point doesn't really carry any validity.

    • Let's see... Azula, ZHAO, ozai (who burned his only son), the Rough Rhinos, yon Rha, all mentally unstable, all firebenders all in positions of authority. And I'm not saying the FN is evil, just that Fire Bending, is probably the least constructive of all four bending arts and the one that is most prone to misuse and destruction. While the others are inherently constructive. For is a weapon that is sometimes used as a tool (like blacksmithing to make more weapons) while water earth and airbending are inherently constructive tools sometimes misused as weapons. Fire always destroys when its not very carefully monitored and controlled. And that's the thing the FN lacks and I believe will always continue to lack. control.

    • Weak argument going over there buddy... Long Feng,Gen. Fong are extremely ambitious and power hungry [and I dont wanna know what are THEIR excuses] and would kill, murder, torture [specially Long Feng] for power. Yon Rha was just carrying out orders from a superior,if he didnt kill her [Kya] He would be probabbly be killed for rioting/treason ofc. Ozai was leading his nation so he NEEDS to win THE WAR. Azula would inherit his position of power so she NEEDS TO DESTROY HER ENEMIES. Zhao was just ambitious as any EK Guy you can see over there. Being Fire Bender or from the Fire Nation doesnt make you essencially violent too... see the Sun Warriors? they dont give a dime about war/world and they leave in a peaceful way, without using their power for war. I dont wanna discuss RL but I now plenty of RL ppl who owned far more butt$ than the entire FN did in 100 years and they are FAR from Firebenders ¬¬ -fnsuport-

    • I, the -fnsupport continues-

With exception of monastic communities [like Air Nomads] All nations, when in a position of avdantage/greater power would try to conquer/submit one of its enemies, be it through conquest, war, invasions, etc. I'm sure if someone with the mentality of Chin the great was in power during Szin's war,he wouldnt be a total WIMP... I just think he'd try to fight back the FN and conquer it when FN is weakened... ¬¬ -fnsupport-

    • General fong was wrong for threatening kataras life to make Aang enter the Avatar State. But i can sympathize with him, the FN has done horrible things to the EK and would have continued to do horrible things to the EK. Fong just wanted to end the war and stop the FNs genocidal war machine. And dont get me started on long feng and the Dai li in my eyes those guys are WORSE than the FN. Traitors and sellouts, who cowered behind a brick wall for 100 years while their people suffered and died in FN work camps and coal barges only to give in to their fear and sell out to the enemy in the end. Chin the conquerer may have been bad, but did he wipe out Two out of four of the nations to satisfy his thirst for conquest? NO!

The point still remains. What supreme being in its right mind creates a nation of Pyromaniacs?

    • Watch the episode "The Firebending Masters." I think that might bring to light all the constructive benefits of firebending.

    • I never understood that episode, fire is energy? That seems like a pretty broad conclusion. It's like saying the sky is big, its true but its not completely descriptive or informative about its true nature. I felt the writers copped out on that episode.

    • I think when Aang says "it feels like a little heartbeat," sums it up best. Fire is not just destruction, but lifegiving light and heat, just like the sun, which I think we all can agree the world is better off having.

    • Its not so much foreboding that's the problem, its Fire peoples national pride that's the problem. The majority of them believe that "fire is the superior element and treat everyone who isn't "a son or daughter of fire" as a worm. Just because of national pride

    • The Fire Nation people are not "pyromaniacs".

Pyromania is is an impulse control disorder consiting of a compulsion to watch or set fires, in absence of momentary or material gain to the person (pyromaniac). Pyromaniac's burn things for pleasure, it's a way they relieve themselves from emotional stress. FN people are trained in the art of firebending (I don't think pyro's can do that). They use fire as a means of protecting their home/family, defending themselves, and fighting, not because they think it's a fun thing to go around burning stuff for happiness.

There's this little thing, called a SUN! It's a big ball of burning gas, which means it's on fire, and it's ESSENTIAL for life. Fire distributes heat, which is another thing that is necessary for humans to live. Plus, fire doesn't always distroy things. I use fire to cook or boil my food, so without fire there would be a lot of things humans could not eat due to food poisoning and the diseases caused by eating raw (uncooked) items. It's also used to create new medicines, so it can be a tool used for saving lives. Fire can only be a weapon if used like one, just the same as the other elements.

Water: There was an extremely deadly tsunami in Japan just last year, and in case you didn't know, tsunamis are made of WATER. I've read about a dam in Kentucky that could possibly break and cause deadly floods in a major part of Tennessee. Many people every year die of drowning in water or choking on it. Snow is frozen ice, which cause frostbite and the loss of limbs. The Titanic also sank by hitting an iceburg, another example of how water can be deadly.

Air: Thousands of people in Japan died due to poisonous gases in the air they breathed, and air was also used as a weapon to kill Jews during Hitler's time. Tornado's are one of the most deadly things on Earth, it's formed by the air moving in a circular motion around clouds (also an example of water, as clouds are formed from water) that eventually touch down and suck up everything in their paths. You can die because of lack of air, like when a person has a hole in their lungs (air will not stay).

Earth: Hello, earthquakes? Volcanos? Avalanches? Sinkholes? Rocks that rained onto the island of Pampeii? I would consider earthbending to be much more dangerous than firebending. After being burned, you still have a chance to survive, whereas being crushed by 2,240 pounds of rock is going to immediately kill you. If a rock hits your head in the right place, you could recieve a fatal injury or a brain injury. The Dust Bowl, caused by the nice dirt of the eath, killed more than 7,000 people. If the earth doesn't want to cooperate, you can't grow food, and then you die. So, earthbending is dangerous too.

In reality, firebending isn't nearly as destructable as the other elements, as long as it is controlled right. So please, if you're going to say that it's dangerous, at least find something that will back it up and be completely unarguable.

    • New addition to the List: the airbender that killed Amon parents.

I'm seeing a recurring pattern here!

    • I like destruction

    • New addition to the list, the fire bender mugger who killed mako and Bolins parents.

    • Fire isn't just destruction, it's life. Yes, we've seen a lot of people lose parents to fire benders in the LoK but where do you assume they live? The Earth Kingdom? If you lived in the Fire Nation, you don't have the rite to say Firebending is the main cause of your parent's demise but the man who did it. If he were an earthbender, he would've beat your parents to death. If her were a waterbender, he would've made them drown and if he were an airbender, the parents would've been dropped to death. It was only because Mako and Bo Lin lived in the Fire Nation and so did Amon.

    • LOL!! @ "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" nice name.. :D.. very good points also btw..

    • You set someone on fire, are all wounds healed and life restored? No! They burn to a blackened crisp! Fire is life? No!

  • Iceland?? Seriously..

    by Klainatta
    • Ironic, huh?

    • Iceland is actually not that icy in comparison to Greenland. So it' s not as ironic as you think.

    • I actually already knew that, and that also isn't why I thought it was ironic. The names being complete opposites (ICEland and the FIRE Nation) makes it ironic that they based the Fire Nation's terrain off of Iceland.

  • I pledge allegiance to the Map of the Four Nations of the Earth, and to the Harmony for which it stands, one World under the Avatar, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all :)

  • Compared to everyone else, the Fire Nation has the best tech and weaponry in their arsenal...

  • I hope we will found out if the fire nation has a new kind ruler. I like to see the glimpse of it in the flashbacks.

  • I always figured the Fire Nation were supposed to be the Japanese.

  • Fire Nation = China The FIRE NATION has obvious references to the TianXia [under heaven] system, used by ancient China from the dawn of the civilization until the end of the opium wars. It consists in the belief that ALL under heaven is under emperor's command, and anyone outside this sphere of control/influence is a barbarian/savage [like Azula says to Zuko if he hasn’t became a savage yet by living with EK people] and the only way of NOT being recognized as a savage is to adopt Han culture, customs and way of life [similar to FN colonization and culture spreading]. ALSO Azula told to Long Feng that Divine Right to rule is something we're born with. THAT’S a clear reference to the Mandate of Heaven concept that states that a good ruler must have its mandate [right to rule] granted by ‘Heaven’. It’s <FN> fundamental belief in obeying your parents AND elders, like generals and masters is a trait of the Confucian thought, Even Ozai showed signs of respect AND fear when talking to his father (Azulon) And even more obvious references are their culture, clothing, weapon, hairstyle. So,when people basically assume FN is Japan from the lack of proper study/SHEER bias toward China. I say, just read/study history, specially history besides ww2,modern imperialism, and such. And take a look at the ancient days. Said such, I hope people don’t get me wrong when I post many things relating FN to China. –fnsupport- <who also posts in TLOK topics as> -fn traditionalist movt-

    • and what do most empires do to the people who wish to keep their traditional culture instead of embracing a tyrants ideal? (examples range from Constantine killing pagans who refused to embrace the church, to the crusades, to 1960's communist russia's persecution of religious ideas, and modern-day post revolution china. Do I even need to mention the reason for the war in the middle east?) The FN forced their ideals and beliefs on the EK people at the point of a sword (or fear of being burned). From their point-of-view they were simply expanding their empire and making the world a better place by sharing their ideals with the savages and if the EK people wouldn't accept them, they deserved to be killed for their rejection of the fire lord. When in reality they were destroying a rather advanced culture with it's own pros and cons and uniqueness just to satisfy the Royal family's thirst for conquest. an exmaple from our world would be like what the Crusades did to the Muslims, or what communist Russia did to the church, or like what the Under Heaven system of medieval china did to those so called "savages".

If someone truly wishes to bring someone to his point of view, (and culture) it is best done through love, kindness, charity, and sharing and examining ones ideas peacefully, (like the Greeks did to the culture of the Romans) not by forcing ones beliefs upon another by wiping out their culture Like the FN did to the EK and WT.

    • I guess some aspects of the Fire nation are based off of China, but on a whole it is based off of Japan. The archipelago structure, as well as the structure of the buildings is definatly based off of Japan. Their hairstyles and clothes also seem Japanese. The Earth Kingdom is definitely based off of China, with it being the largest nation in a similar shape to China, as well as the national emblam and currency, and their building style. Though admittedly their style of dress sometimes appears to be Korean.

    • FN Architecture is essentialy Chinese, they even got some Paifang gates in some colonies/mainland FN cities. even that upwards pointy thingy [can't tell what really is hehe =D] FN got in their buildings roof is inspired by Chinese Architecture. And FN got some Thai architecture too, look up thai ancient temples/housing/palaces and you'll see the similarity... can't see nothing of essentialy/originally Japanese on their housing/architecture. Now EK... i've seen some, specially on Song's village [pretty much korean too] and BSS lower rings [similarity with ancient Edo]. AND also I'll state that the Japanese temple/pagodas and other HUGE structures are HEAVILY influenced from Chinese culture. ^_^ -fn support-

    • Oh also forgot that Chinese symbol [at least culturally] even was the Dragon, which is a frequent feature in FN culture as well... the EK currency = chinese one. the round coin with a square hole right? but remember that China used many kinds of currency in its past, including a 'coin' similar to a sword <a small one ofc> [o_O] and that Avatar world is based on entirety [?] of Asia, specially with a Sino-centric view. Even Water tribe [NWT] uses totens similar to those near forbidden city, and their doors [round] are 'moon doors' frequently used in temples and such. But FN philosophy is essencialy = Under Heaven [TianXia] system.

    • "The archipelago structure, as well as the structure of the buildings is definatly based off of Japan. Their hairstyles and clothes also seem Japanese."

Wrong. It is well known that Japanese architecture stems from Chinese architecture. Truly original Japanese buildings would be the wooden "huts" reminiscent of something a shaman from a tribe would live in.

And the clothing and hair styles are painfully Chinese. Just because the West encountered China when it was under the Manchu rulers, before that, we had Han culture, which is what Japan based almost everything on. The little hair ornaments are almost definetly Chinese, as well as the clothes, which are 'Hanfus' and not kimonos. Check out the original Chinese Han culture on Wiki first.

  • Only 3 comments?

  • Kahchi = Guan Yu [3kingdoms general, and a saint] Sozin = Mao Zedong [wants to change the world, reforms, etc] Mongke = Genghis Khan, Zhao = Kublai Khan [almost invaded japan with massive fleet, but japan was saved due to nature] Azula = Wu Zetian [1st chinese empress, Tang Dynasty] well, the list goes on and on...
