The Southern Air Temple was one of the four air temples populated by the late Air Nomads, and one of the two exclusively housing male airbenders, with the other being the Northern Air Temple. Its desertion is a result of the Air Nomad Genocide, a massacre committed by the Fire Nation in the early stages of the Hundred Year War that resulted in the near extinction of the Air Nomads. The temple is notable for being the childhood home of Avatar Aang.
