Monk Gyatso was an airbending master who eventually became a member of the Council of Elders. He served as Aang's mentor and caretaker until he was killed during the Air Nomad Genocide.[1]

History

After Aang was born, Gyatso became the young Avatar's guardian. The two had a close relationship and he was described by Aang to be "kind of like [his] father". One day, Gyatso received a necklace that Aang had carved for him and he wore it ever since. They subsequently walked around the temple as they usually would, talking and laughing.

Gyatso had taught Aang most of the airbending the young monk knew. Even after finding out Aang was the Avatar, he tried to make his life as fun and normal as possible. He was also present at the ceremony in which Aang had to accept his role as the Avatar. Gyatso looked up at him, trying to give him confidence, though to no avail as the young Avatar ran away anyway.

Sometime after that, Gyatso was killed in the Air Nomad Genocide, conducted by the Fire Nation.

Legacy

One hundred years later, Aang returned to the temple with Katara and Sokka, only to discover that Gyatso had been killed. Upon seeing the remains of his mentor, Aang entered the Avatar State in a fit of rage.

Trivia

  • In the film, Gyatso has a darker complexion than in the original series.
  • Contrary to his elderly animated counterpart, Gyatso appears to be a somewhat younger man in the film.
  • Gyatso did not have any lines in the film.
  • In the video game for the movie, Gyatso's characterization is closer to how he appears in the series, with a lighter skin tone and a white mustache.
