Republic City skyline

Republic City's skyline prior to the Unalaq Crisis.

The capital of the United Republic of Nations, Republic City, has a unique cityscape which developed over several decades as the result of heavy industrialization, rapid population growth, great technological as well as architectural advances, and bustling cultural diversity.[1][2] As one of the largest cities of the world, Republic City is a true metropolitan urban center.[3]

Republic City can be divided into a series of very diverse areas, each having distinct population, traditions, structures, and problems. These include districts and boroughs such as the Central District, Downtown, the Yue Bay port area, Old Cranefish Town, Harmony Park, Roku Plaza, Green Meadows, and the Dragon Flats borough. Furthermore, there a less traditional zones such as the Spirit Wilds district around the spirit portal and the extensive underground network beneath the city.[4]

Architecture[]

Main article: Architecture in the World of Avatar

The city has developed the architectural and technological sophistication to construct taller buildings, resulting in significant high-rise development. Stylistically, the city generally incorporates traditional ornamentation with far more advanced structural techniques, such as the design of City Hall and the Pro-bending Arena. Despite this, there are still landmarks built entirely in a traditional style, such as Air Temple Island.[1]

Central Republic City map with districts

Map of central Republic City, showcasing a few important districts and locations. The geographic north is located to the map's right.

Though the wider urban area of Republic City extends inland and along a larger coastal section, the core of the metropolis is focused on the territories around Yue Bay.[5] In particular, the peninsula which stretches into the bay area harbors many of the city's most important locations and districts.[6]

The oldest part of the metropolis, Old Cranefish Town, covers the old territory of Cranefish Town[7] on the southwestern peninsula.[8][6] Downtown is located to the north and northeast of Old Cranefish Town.[5][9] A bit further north along the peninusula are the Spirit Wilds, formerly also part of Downtown.[9][10] Beyond this section, the remaining part of the peninsula is largely dominated by the Central District.[6][11] To the east of the peninsula, beyond an inlet of Yue Bay, lies Green Meadows district.[6][12] Further south, the Dragon Flats borough is located at a river tributary.[13]

Central District[]

The Central District is the political heart of Republic City, hosting not just the city leadership but also the government of the entire United Republic.[4][11] It is home to the City Hall, the police headquarters, and Avatar Korra Park.[11] It is often bustling with activity, as politicians, bureaucrats, and lobbyists meet in government buildings and other, less formal locations to discuss various topics and steer the republic's future. As a result of the concentration of power within the Central District, however, the area also has a darker side, as triad and company representatives engage in subtile corruption, while spies and informants abound, listening and selling their knowledge to their contractors.[11]

Avatar Korra Park[]

Avatar Korra Park.

Located in the city's central peninsula, Avatar Korra Park, formerly known as Republic City Park, is landscaped with small hills, deciduous trees shading impeccably kept grass, and fine stone arch bridges. Due to the poverty of a large number of Republic City citizens, the city park has also become a place popular with vagabonds such as Gommu, whom Korra met soon after her initial arrival in the city. Fishing in the ponds here is strictly prohibited by the park officials, who patrol it to ensure that all civilians bide by this rule.[14]

Central City Station[]

Central City Station is the city's main hub of transportation, though its importance declined over the years due to the advent of the Satomobile. Nonetheless, it remains a busy commercial center, which is symbolized by the monumental statue of Fire Lord Zuko at its front entrance.[15][11] By 174 AG, with the backing of Future Industries, the station had been renovated to include a new rail-line system allowing for travel to the neighboring Earth Kingdom.[16] It is also one of the parts of the Central District most affected by triad activity, as criminals try to scam new arrivals.[11]

City Hall[]

The City Hall.

City Hall is a center for governance in Republic City, hosting the offices of the President as well as mayor.[11] Secondarily, it is also a venue for public press conferences and gatherings, which are held at the large square before its front entrance.[5] While the building has an entrance typical of traditional architecture from the Earth Kingdom or Fire Nation, certain distinctive features, including the large dome and four spires at the corners, are derived from a new style developed after the Hundred Year War. After being partially overrun by spirit vines following Harmonic Convergence, the building was repaired and the vegetation integrated into the structural design.[11]

Police headquarters[]

The police headquarters.

The police headquarters, often referred to simply as "Headquarters", is the base of operations for the city's police, including its famous metalbending elite unit.[14] It is also where apprehended criminals are booked and jailed. The architecture of the police headquarters is comparable to that of standard Earth Kingdom buildings, with both the exterior and the interior being largely geometrical in design. Headquarters is overseen by Chief Lin Beifong. On the Headquarters' facade stands a statue of Toph Beifong.[17] After the destruction of Downtown, the police temporarily relocated to a less ornate building elsewhere in the city,[18] before ultimately returning.[14]

Triple Threat Triad headquarters[]

Main article: Triple Threat Triad headquarters

The Triple Threat Triad, Republic City's most notorious organized crime faction, was originally based in Central District. The headquarters was disguised as a restaurant and located on a minor roadway near Central City Station.[19] The location was abandoned after Tokuga's rise to triad boss.[20]

Dragon Flats borough[]

Main article: Dragon Flats borough
Dragon Flats district

The Dragon Flats borough is a neighborhood home to many non-benders.

The Dragon Flats borough is one of Republic City's most significant residential sectors, inhabited mainly by nonbenders. It is one of the poorer parts of the city, and a hotspot for triad activity.[4][13] It is also famous for being Hiroshi Sato's birthplace.[21] Historically, the Dragon Flats borough has suffered from underfunding by the city government, with the triads acting as a de facto replacement source of money and other support for the locals. In turn, the criminals gained a safe haven, largely outside police control.[13] Unsurprisingly, this has not endeared the area to the authorities, with government representatives like Tarrlok considering the entire population suspect.[22] Despite its poor reputation, however, the Dragon Flats borough also offers affordable housing of better quality than in many industrial districts, as well as a tight-knit community that looks out for its members.[13]

Bi Mi Tang Dumpling[]

Main article: Bi Mi Tang Dumpling

Bi Mi Tang Dumpling serves as the Terra Triad's headquarters. The restaurant serves hopelessly mediocre dumplings, but the customers are not always there for the cuisine. Rather, it is a location for "business" in the criminal underworld of Republic City.[13][23]

Chi-blocker training camp[]

Main article: Chi-blocker training camp

The chi-blocker training camp was a secret Equalist facility used for instructing nonbenders on chi-blocking. It was hidden in a secret cellar underneath a bookstore, and was successfully invaded by Tarrlok, Korra, and the remainder of Tarrlok's task force. Several people who had been participating in Equalist activities at the time were captured by the task force and arrested.[15]

Dragon Flats Reform School[]

The Dragon Flats Reform School is a institute of learning located in an old mansion within the borough. It originates as a vanity project and elaborate tax dodge by wealthy socialite Ruo Ling who never actually intended for the school to function. Ironically, however, she hired a local, Akanah, as headmistress, who actually began turning the project into a well-functioning education institute, despite many persisting issues.[24]

Kya's Free Clinic[]

Organized by Kya and her assistant Mikomiko, this clinic provides aid to the Dragon Flats' inhabitants free of charge and with no questions asked. As a result, it quickly grew into a highly important and respected fixture of the borough, despite being chronically underfunded and understaffed. The clinic is also considered neutral ground by most triads, and thus generally able to stay out of any turf wars.[24]

Platinum Pool Hall[]

The Platinum Pool Hall is generally better known as the "Creeping Crystal Triad's Pool Hall", serving as the triad's main hideout ever since their previous headquarters was torched during Tokuga's insurrection. It serves frosty drinks by the bartender Sikkuak, and people gather to play pool, a game with bats and balls evolved from the indoors. The tavern usually has a few Creeping Crystal Triad members around playing or drinking icy beverages. Non-triad members also visit and stay, as they are allowed as long as they are quiet, respectful, and non-inquisitive.[13][25]

Downtown district[]

Downtown Republic City

Downtown during the day

The Downtown district serves as Republic City's technological and financial center, hosting the headquarters of many globally active companies such as Future Industries, Cabbage Corp, Keum Enterprises, San Ho Consortium, and Dyo Motors. Standing on top of an ancient mica schist suitable as foundation for especially tall buildings, the Downtown became the first part of Republic City to feature skyscrapers which now dominate the area completely.[4][26] As the bustling commercial center of the city, Downtown is reminiscent of all the different elemental bending traditions in both its architecture and its population. Railroad tracks sit elevated above the roadways, offering transportation to those wishing to explore the city. Considering its importance, the district is protected by a massive police presence operating airships.[1]

Despite this security, Downtown suffers from organized crime as much as the remainder of Republic City. The Triple Threat Triad, the largest triad of the whole city, traditionally claimed the downtown area as their turf and runs protection rackets throughout it.[27] The area is also a hub for spies and infiltrators seeking to uncover or steal the commercial companies' secrets.[26]

Cabbage Corp Headquarters[]

Main article: Cabbage Corp Headquarters

One of Downtown's larger skyscrapers, the Cabbage Corps Headquarters suffered significant damage during the Unalaq Crisis and the Earth Empire invasion, though it survived both.[28]

Four Nations Hall[]

Main article: Four Nations Hall

The Four Nations Hall was designed by several major corporations as a building for a cultural and technology exhibition known as "Four Nations Fair". Though internationally famous, the fair has also drawn criticism as a vehicle for corporate lobbying as well as a wasteful project, considering that much of Republic City is still in desperate need of repairs due to the crisises of the early 170s AG.[28]

Tea Market[]

Main article: Tea Market

Downtown's Tea Market is a bazaar of stalls and shacks under canvas canopies, located in the middle of the area's skyscrapers. Here, corporate workers often stop for a meal and to rest; it is also a center for less formal business meetings and shady dealings.[26]

Green Meadows district[]

Republic City industrial areas

The Green Meadows district is the industrial center of Republic City.

Green Meadows, nicknamed "Pickle Town", is the most important industrial district of Republic City,[4][12] hosting the factories of many companies including Future Industries.[12] It is mainly inhabited by blue-collar workers, most of whom live in large, company-constructed tenement complexes. The district is famous for its inhabitants' love for the crunchiest fermented garlic and pickled peppers, earning it its nickname. In the 170s AG, the district experienced significant upheaval due to attempts by local workers to unionize.[12]

Foggy Willow Pickles[]

Formerly known as Hongli Family Picklery, the modern Foggy Willow Pickles is a rebranded, prosperous and "hip" restaurant attracting younger people living in Green Meadows. The location is known for serving more experimental pickles, while also offering rooms for rent in the upper sections (as part of the Hongli Inn). It has also become a gathering place for unionists and journalists interested in their cause.[36]

Green Meadow Towers[]

The Green Meadow Towers are a series of interconnected tenement buildings covering four city blocks. Originally a series of unrelated housing blocks, they gradually grew together due to constant repairs and the inhabitants' own, largely unsanctioned modifications. Now, they form a kind of village within the district, forming a complex network of artificial tunnels and homes where outsiders can easily become lost.[12] The towers' eastern wing also host Pa's Basement, an illegal bar which acts as a center for union organizers in the district.[36]

Rally building[]

Main article: Rally building

The rally building is a large convention hall formerly operated by the Equalists. It is located near an industrial sector of Republic City's waterfront, at the intersection of two minor roadways and is the place where Amon's revelation rally was held.

Republic City power plant[]

Main article: Republic City power plant

The Republic City power plant is the main source of electricity for the city. It is operated by firebenders through the use of lightning generation. According to Mako, the pay for the job is decent.[19]

Whale Dolphin Dining Hall[]

The Whale Dolphin Dining Hall is a massive complex, serving food to Green Meadows' workers and their families at all times of day. Despite having to sell great quantities of food in quick succession, the Whale-Dolphin Dining Hall is serving relatively high-quality cuisine considering the low prices. This is possible because all of Green Meadows' factories collectively help to finance the hall, seeing it as a good publicity as only their workers (and the workers' relatives) are allowed to buy food there, providing them with a sense of loyalty to their companies.[12]

Old Cranefish Town[]

Street in Old Cranefish Town

Compared to other parts of Republic City, Old Cranefish Town features older and smaller buildings.

The district of Old Cranefish Town is the oldest section of Republic City, having emerged from the original Cranefish Town. As such, the district's buildings tend to be smaller, older, and less modern than those in other city parts. Considering its origin, the district is home to families that have lived there for generations and treasure its traditions. In fact, most of the district is owned and managed by a small number of extensive clans who have agreed to only sell properties amongst each other to prevent outsiders from destroying the district via redevelopment projects. By the 170s AG, however, the old families' hold over the district began to crumble, as dissident family members sold their highly valuable property in Old Cranefish Town to the highest bidders, usually large corporations hoping to set up shopping malls and luxury housing.[7]

Earthen Fire Refinery[]

Main article: Earthen Fire Refinery

The Earthen Fire Refinery, now a disused facility, was once a heart of the town and its oldest establishment. Set up in the territory of the former Fire Nation colonies by the international Earthen Fire Industries,[37] it led to the foundation of Cranefish Town.[38][8] Eventually, the refinery was shut down and abandoned and taken over by the Creeping Crystal Triad in one of Republic City's many turf wars. The facility remains connected to the large underground tunnel network.[39]

Old Cranefish Town's Best Ramen[]

Best Ramen, Republic City's fastest-growing noodle franchise, opened a new location in Old Cranefish Town, right where the Tai Family Noodle House once stood. The Tai family broke with the long-held traditions of the district by selling all their property for a great sum to outsiders, with most of the clan leaving the area. The exception was Tai Yiang Jiang, who decided to maintain at least a bit of the family traditions by staying and working under the Best Ramen franchise with the blessing of the franchise owner Maral, even though many locals consider him a traitor. Located near the Red Wing Opera House, the restaurant's extensive menu includes a wide variety of available toppings at a low price, and it caters to tourists and businesspeople who work in the district and want a quick bite before heading home.[40]

Raven Eagle Hall for Martial Arts[]

A world-renowned location owned by the Uwir family, the Raven Eagle Hall for Martial Arts has hosted some of the most capable and famous sifus from across the four nations. As a result of its high reputation and its members being martial artists, the hall became a rallying point for those opposed to the redevelopment of Old Cranefish Town.[7][40]

Red Wing Opera House[]

The Red Wing Opera House is one of the oldest buildings in Republic City, with parts of its structure having first been part of the original Cranefish Town Theater. Owned by the Li family, the Red Wing Opera House has managed to preserve its status as a cultural locus, and is able to attract international talents from across the world to this day. Thus, it remains highly popular and commercially successful.[7]

Northern Springs[]

The Northern Springs is a luxurious sauna owned by the Chen family. It is also the district's main hotbed for local gossip due to being the favorite meeting place of the old families' elders. However, the sauna has recently begun to struggle commercially.[40][41]

Water treatment plant[]

Located near the center of the old city, the water treatment plant has been a fixture of the area for as long as anyone can remember. It is the source of fresh water for the extensive plumbing throughout the city. The plant provides clean water for every resident of Republic City. Beneath the plant are the catacombs, where all the pipes connect into a central location. There is also a mural rife with Southern Water Tribe symbology, depicting the Water Tribe bringing fresh water from deep underground (the aquifer) to help create a thriving Republic City. Images of Water Tribe women in a joyous celebration surround the reservoir.[23]

Roku Plaza district[]

The Roku Plaza is a upper-middle class district[42] and home to Republic City University[43] and the great Fire Lord Zuko Library.[4] It is the metropolis' center of learning, though also infamous due to its rambunctious, politically active student population. Both during the Anti-bending Revolution as well as in the following years, it has also served as a center for the Equalists who often found an eager audience among more radical students.[42]

The Auspicious Bear[]

The Auspicious Bear is a restaurant located near Republic City University. The large square building has a restaurant in the front and various meeting rooms in the back, housing various student clubs and discourses that overflow from the university. The structure is built around a large central garden in the middle of the building, beloved by many of the regulars. A statue of a chubby bear wearing a delicate hat sits at the base of the bamboo tree in the garden, which the owner, Sonam, swears is an authentic statue of the 52nd Earth King's pet bear, Bosco. The restaurant is known to be a place where the Peace Lily Society regularly hosts meetings, as Sonam is an old friend of Metog and knows many of its members by name.[43]

Yue Bay district[]

Republic City port

Republic City port during the day.

The Yue Bay district is mainly marked by Republic City's port area, hosting a significant amount of international commercial traffic, and serves as the terminal for a cargo and passenger steamship lines to places all across the world.[4][47] Automobiles are brought to the port and loaded onto the ships, on which they are taken regions across the world. The area has road access as well as a railroad line. Several wooden piers extend into Yue Bay, some of which have structures constructed above them. One of these buildings exhibits Earth Kingdom architectural features, having brown sides, a green roof, and a dome. In addition to foreign steamers, the port also serves as a terminal for the Air Temple Island ferry. A suspension bridge is built above the area.[1]

Republic City underground[]

Main article: Republic City underground

The underground of Republic City, though not a district in the traditional sense, is still a significant section of the metropolis. Most city residents are unaware of the extent of the underground, regarding it as a mere hideout for criminals. In reality, a vibrant community lives and operates in the tunnels and caves beneath the city, including the diverse population of Tin Town, various groups of tunnel racers and their audiences, and smugglers using the Warrens as pathways.[52][53]

Tin Town[]

Underground shelter

Older underground shelters and camps ultimately evolved into the modern "Tin Town".

Existing as a underground shantytown, albeit a well-built one, is the settlement of "Tin Town". This community initially emerged as a nomadic collection of people moving into the tunnels for various reasons, forgotten by the citizens above. After the Earth Empire invasion, its people settled down in the large badgermole-created passages and built a permanent residence. Though mostly built using trash, Tin Town has some rather well-constructed parts and a vibrant art community, with murals adorning walls and art pieces created amid and between the shared housing as well as tents. It is home to the poor, refugees, misunderstood artists, and criminals hiding from their past. Despite its marginal position, Tin Town's people are proud and hardy, and have even elected their own mayor, Yulan.[52]

The Warrens[]

Equalists underground tunnels

A typical underground Equalist facility within the Warrens.

The Republic City tunnel network, better known as the "Warrens", consists of the cities' sewers, illegal subterranean passages created by smugglers and rebels, ruined sections of the old city, and pathways created by badgermoles during the Earth Empire invasion. The tunnels traditionally host smuggling operations and have also become popular among an illegal racing scene, as the police have little control over them.[53] For the same reason, the Warrens were once popular hideouts for the Equalists, hosting prisons, training camps, and garages.[53][54]

In more recent time, the underground racing community fully repurposed parts of the Warrens as their race tracks, adapting them to their needs. The race tracks often bustle with activity, attracting triads, gamblers, thrill seekers, and wealthy visitors from across Republic City.[52][53]

Spirit vine roots[]

After the Spirit Wilds emerged in Republic City's downtown, their roots bored deep into the earth beneath. The roots, radiating a strange energy, appear not to function as normal plant roots. Instead, they often move seemingly for some "strange purpose", creating new, maze-like tunnel sections. Most underground residents stay away from the spirit vine roots, unsure about their function and behavior.[52]

Spirit Wilds[]

Main article: Spirit Wilds
Overgrown Republic City

Spirit Wilds exist within Republic City since the Unalaq Crisis.

Following Avatar Korra's decision to keep the spirit portals open in the aftermath of the Unalaq Crisis during Harmonic Convergence in 171 AG, the Spirit Wilds partially reemerged over the city. The proliferation of spirit vines brought destruction to large parts of the city, prompting many citizens to evacuate from boroughs which became part of the new Spirit Wilds.[55][56] This vegetation became home to spirits that migrated to the physical world. At first, the citizens struggled to cope with these changes, but they eventually learned to coexist; roads were built around the vines and the spirits eventually became a tourist attraction.[16] After Kuvira's attack on Republic City, the explosion of her spirit energy cannon resulted in a slight expansion of the Spirit Wilds in the downtown area and the creation of a new spirit portal. Raiko and Tenzin agreed to expand Republic City rather than reconstruct the destroyed area.[10] As such, homeless residents had to take refuge in a tent camp on the outskirts of the city.[18]

However, not all humans left the territory affected by the Spirit Wilds. Some residents refused to move after the Unalaq Crisis and the spirit portal's creation, preferring to try to live alongside the spirits rather than give up their homes. In addition to these individuals, some people migrated to the Spirit Wilds explicitly to live in this new environment, giving rise to a diverse community. The Spirit Wilds also feature a strong presence of the Air Nation, as they manage and protect the local spirit portal.[56][57]

Keum Tower[]

Formerly headquarters of Keum Enterprises, Keum Tower is a skyscraper that located within the Spirit Wilds' reaches and abandoned when Wonyong Keum transferred his local properties to the Air Nation. Afterward, refugees and freethinkers moved in to inhabit the structure, soon turning it into a center of creativity, freedom, and delinquency.[57]

Republic City Spirit Portal[]

Republic City portal

A spirit portal was formed in the heart of Republic City's Spirit Wilds.

As the local gateway to the Spirit World, Republic City's spirit portal has become a popular site for sacred pilgrimages and more secular tourism. It is protected by the Air Nation who carefully manage any would-be visitors and occasionally organize rescue parties for people who are unwise enough to sneak through the area's security to enter the Spirit World alone.[56]

Meditation Tree[]

The Meditation Tree is one of the largest plants that grew after the Unalaq Crisis in Republic City. The tree exudes a strange energy, causing visitors realize any pain and lingering thoughts they carry within. Though this exposure can ultimately have a therapeutic effect, most people still consider it uncanny and thus avoid the tree. However, Jinora regularily organizes exercises at the tree with those who seek out its strange effects.[57]

Spirit Shrine[]

The Spirit Shrine is located at the Spirit Wilds' border and acts as gateway, with local Air Nation members preparing any visitors both spiritually and practically, to avoid issues with the local spirits or vegetation.[56]

The entire structure has been fortified and converted into offices and headquarters for both the San Ho Consortium and certain faces of the Terra Triad, like Steely Ning. When the First Gentleman, Varrick, was kidnapped, he was held in a windowless stone room here until the Terra Triad moved him to the water treatment facility.[62]
