Chapter 23[]
The 19 year old sped her way back into the guesthouse. She had just left an awkward conversation between her sister and Bolin. I wonder what that goof is up to, Sahara thought. She walked down the halls swiftly, however, she was interrupted when a door to her right opened. The door smacked her in the forehead.
"Ouch!" she cried. Mako stepped out of the room.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" the Firebender apologized.
Sahara placed her palm against the pained area and attempted a feint smile. "It's okay."
Mako smiled in return. "So, have you seen my brother?" he asked.
"Yeah! He was just with Raina... I kind of left. Heh," she answered.
"What do you think they're up to?"
"I'm not really sure. Bolin is your brother, you should know him better," she joked.
"I guess, but-" Mako began.
"It doesn't matter, I'll ask her when I see her again," Sahara assured. Tenzin appeared at the end of the hall. He invited them to come to a meeting with Chief Unalaq. The two gladly accepted and they followed Tenzin.
In the palace, Tenzin, Korra, Mako, Asami, Lin, and the Chief sat at a circle table to discuss rather important matters. The Chief began explaining the known details of Senna and Tonraq's disappearance.
"I can take you to where they stayed and you can see if you can find any evidence of who took them," Unalaq offered.
"Oh, we have our speculations," Lin said. The Chief gave them a puzzled look. The master airbender spoke.
"We believe it was the Dragon Men. They are a group-"
"Yes, I am very aware of who they are," Unalaq interrupted rather rudely. "We must do everything we can to bring them back."
"Yeah, without Tonraq, the Southern Water Tribe has no leader," Mako added. Sahara and Lin nodded.
"Indeed, however maybe someone new and up to the task might take over the job of Chief in Tonraq's absence," Unalaq stated oddly. Korra smacked her hand against the table in anger.
"What do you mean?! Are you trying to say my dad isn't good enough to be Chief of the Southern Water Tribe?!"
Everyone gasped.
"No, no! Not at all!" Unalaq defended. "I was just introducing a fact. My brother has always been rather brash and hotheaded. He relies on his warrior abilities for power. But, it takes more than strength and skill. The Southern Water Tribe needs a more spiritual leader to keep the Water Nation's traditions alive." The group was silent. Jaws hung open in shock. Chief Unalaq stood up and cleared his throat.
"Come, let me show you where your parents were last seen." He waved towards the Avatar and smiled. They all followed the Chief out of the room. Sahara gave Mako a look. Mako shrugged.
Making their way to the location, there was an awkward silence between Korra and her Uncle. Does he really think he's a better chief than... no... Sahara thought. Mako pulled up next to her.
"I hope Korra's parents are okay," Sahara said aloud.
"Yeah, I know," Mako agreed. "I know what it's like to lose the people you love and I don't want her to ever go through that." Sahara nodded. She knew exactly what he meant.
"If you don't mind me asking," the Firebender hesitated, "Do you really think the Dragon Men got your parents too?" Sahara stopped walking and sighed. She nodded.
"Yes."
Mako stared at his feet.
"Maybe we'll find them with Korra's parents?" He suggested with intentions on reviving hope.
"Maybe," Sahara replied.
The group walked for an unusual ten minutes before finally arriving at a nice, little house. It sat silently and peacefully by a number or neighboring huts. Children ran around playing in the snow. The sun was high in the sky and the Chief opened the door. Everyone stepped into the house and was surprised to see everything intact.
"This is strange," Lin said.
"Yeah, it is." Asami answered.
"You know what else is strange?" Korra questioned. "Why did my parents stay so far away from the palace?!" All eyes were on Chief Unalaq.
"Wait!" Mako yelled. All eyes were focused on the Firebender now. "Look!" he said. Mako picked up a letter from a table standing in the left hand corner of the room.
"Letters again!?" Tenzin asked. Mako nodded. As everyone crowded around Mako and the letter, the Avatar left the room. She trudged outside. She wanted to get away from the letter. Away from whatever silly surprises the writer had in store for her.
Asami followed close behind.
