The Last Standoff
Book 1: Making Discoveries
Justin was only 12 years old. But he always acted so mature and polite. It was the day of his 13th birthday.
"Just a few more hours and I'll be 13!" Justin said excitedly.
"Calm down Justin. It's not like you're being crowned a king or something." Justin's little sister, Suzie said.
"Suzie, I've been dreaming of this day for years. I can't calm down!" Justin said, slightly annoyed at his little sister.
"Well I for one, miss your usual calm, quiet, and collected self." Suzie said as she went up the stairs.
Justin sat down at his desk in Room 14, Mrs. Lynch's classroom. It was dreadfully hot in the classroom, but Justin didn't mind. Mrs. Lynch walked into the room and stood in front of the class.
"I see I have a few familiar faces. Justin I see you got to be in my class again." Mrs. Lynch said with a smile.
Justin had always been Mrs. Lynch's favorite student. Justin had been in Mrs. Lynch's class for the past 2 years. This was the last year that he would be in Mrs. Lynch's class.
After school, Justin went to his friend, Phil's house.
"Hey Justin. Happy birthday!" Phil said as he opened the door.
"Hey Phil. Why weren't you in school today?" Justin asked.
"I had to go to the hospital. My little sister fell down the stairs." Phil said with a so-and-so face.
"Is Kimmy alright?" Justin asked alarmed.
"Yeah, she just broke her leg. She should be out of the hospital tomorrow night." Phil said.
"That's good that it wasn't anything serious." Justin said, relieved.
The next day, a new girl walked into the class. Mrs. Lynch guided her to her new seat next to Justin. Justin looked at her, blushing.
"Hi, I'm Rose." Rose said to Justin.
"I'm Justin. It's nice to meet you." Justin said to her politely.
"It's nice to meet you too. I just transferred from California." Rose said.
"I've always wanted to go to California. It looks so pretty in the pictures but I really want to see what it looks like in real life." Justin said.
"Maybe you could come to California with me and my parents for Christmas." Rose suggested.
"Really? That would be great. I just have to ask my parents." Justin said.
"Alright class, settle down. It's time to start our classwork." Mrs. Lynch said while passing out papers.
At lunch, Justin sat at his usual table. Rose spotted him and walked over.
"Is it okay if I sit with you?" Rose asked.
"Sure." Justin said, sounding slightly nervous.
Rose sat down and asked if Justin could be her friend.
"Of course." Justin replied.
Rose and Justin talked all through lunch and headed to gym together. They talked the
whole time and soon gym class was over.
In the last class of the day, as everyone prepared to go home, Rose walked up to
Justin and handed him a note with her address and phone number.
"If you can come over, make sure to call first." Rose said as she walked out the door.
When Justin got home he went into the kitchen.
"Mom, can I go over to a friend's house?" Justin asked.
"Which friend?" Justin's mom asked.
"Rose. She asked me to come over today." Justin said."She's a new girl in my class."
"Okay, but I'm driving you there." Justin's mom said.
Justin ran into the living room and grabbed the phone. He dialed Rose's phone
number and waited as the phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. Four. Five.
"Hey Rose, it's Justin. My mom said I can come over. I'll be there in a little while."
Justin left a message.
Justin's moms car pulled into Rose's driveway. Justin jumped out of the car and
went to the door. He knocked on the door.
"Oh. Hey Justin." Rose said.
"Hey. I called before we left. Did you get the message? Justin asked.
"Yeah I did. Come on in." Rose said. She led Justin to the living room where her
parents were sitting.
"Mom, dad, this is Justin. My new friend from school." Rose said, gesturing to Justin.
"Hello." Justin said while shaking hands with Rose's parents.
"Hi Justin. It's so nice to meet you." Mrs. Bloom said. "Justin, our daughter is still adjusting to life here and I'm glad she has a friend like you."
Mr. Bloom said.
"Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Bloom." Justin said with a smile.
"Oh please, call me Petunia. You're practically family already." Petunia Bloom said.
"And call me Carl." Carl Bloom said.
"Come on Justin. I'll show you my room." Rose said, dragging Justin along.
Rose opened the door to a beautiful, red painted room.
"What do you think?" Rose asked.
"It's amazing." Justin said.
Justin and Rose were sitting there, staring into each other's eyes like they could see
every tomorrow. Rose moved in and kissed Justin and he kissed back. When they
came out of the trance of the kiss, they were both flustered and they ran into
the living room and sat on opposite sides of the room.
"What's wrong Rose?" Petunia asked.
"N-nothing." Rose stuttered.
"The both of you look flustered. What's wrong?" Carl asked.
"Nothing." Justin said.
"Okay...." Petunia said doubtfully.
