|The Fire Lord & The Tribal Princess|
Book 2: First Impressions
November 6, 2011
The Fire Lord & The Tribal Princess is the thirteenth chapter of theand the third chapter of "Book 2: First Impressions".
Zuko paced through the throne room. One section of the roof had collapsed in the earthquake. Several of the ebony pillars had fallen and others were cut off. Miraculously, the throne was left completely intact.
As he pondered the damage, footsteps quietly sounded behind him. He turned to see Katara carrying two small cups of jasmine tea. Her smile was so calming, Zuko almost forgot why he was here.
"Hey, Zuko." Katara offered him a cup.
Zuko took the cup from her. "Thanks." Together, they took a sip.
As soon as the bitter juice hit the Fire Lord's tongue, his eyes began watering. Memories of his uncle, Iroh, came flooding back to him. Those two years at sea chasing Aang. Their days as fugitives in the Earth Kingdom. The day the two of them reunited in Ba Sing Se.
"Are you okay?" Katara put her arm around his shoulders.
"Yeah." Zuko wiped his eyes.
Katara stood and turned away, then she came back and gave Zuko a hug.
"I just wanted to say thank you for saving me." she whispered in his ear.
Katara let go of him and walked away. As he saw her leave, Zuko's memories started showing themselves. These were just fresher.
Three Days Earlier
Finally, the shaking stopped. Mai, Zuko, Aang and Katara looked up from their huddled fetal positions and stood shakily on their own two feet. The room and hall outside seemed relatively unshaken by the earthquake.
Aang was first out of the room, followed closely by Mai, then Zuko, with Katara bringing up the rear. The four of them surveyed the damage as they walked down the hallway.
Sections of roof had caved in, revealing patches of blue sky. Dark redwood pillars had toppled across the hallway. Lanterns had fallen from their posts and left scorch marks on the floor.
As they neared the end of the hallway, the debris seemed to clear. The hall looked almost identical to it before the quake. Aang and Mai left the building faster than Zuko. Therefore, they were farther away when the roof fell.
A loud crack filled the air. Zuko whipped around and saw deep cracks forming in the ceiling above Katara's head. They both looked at each other, fear in their eyes, as the plaster crumbled down over Katara.
Zuko sprang into action. He jumped in front of Katara and flipped in the air. He launched a wheel of fire at the ceiling and it burst into flames. Katara bent the water in her pouch into a shield and blocked the burning roof. It disintegrated into ashes and fell around them.
Zuko and Katara looked at each other with relief in their eyes. Katara ran into Zuko's outstretched arms and wrapped hers around him.
"Thank you." she whispered. Zuko hugged her back.
