"A long time has passed since the hundred year war." thought Aang. "I still think about it from time to time." Knowing death would be upon him sooner than later, he felt he should finish to tell the story of his life.
"Katara, darling, please come in here." called Aang.
"Yes, sweetie?" Katara called back as she walked into the room where Aang sat.
"Darling, I want to finish my story, ... OUR story," said Aang.
Katara slightly snickered but with a confused expression asking, "Aang, what do you mean our story? Like you and I?"
"No! Everyone knows that story Katara." Aang snickered then smiled. "I mean the story of our lives after the war. The continued good that we did. What our families shouldn't forget even when the rest of the world does." Katara starred confusingly but yet, understanding.
"Well where do you wanna start?"
Aang, smiling from ear to ear answered, "Good question, I'm not quite sure which is why I called you in!" Katara wasn't sure what was up with Aang but she knew he wouldn't rest until he figured it out.
"Here comes a long night" she thought.
Half way through the night Katara had helped Aang get most of his thoughts together. They were getting ready to stop for the night when Katara asked, "Why did you decide you wanted to write this, Aang?"
Aang responded, "Because Katara..."
"Because what, Aang?" Katara asked knowing Aang was hiding something. "Aang, you know you can tell me anything."
Aang stared at her, not wanting her to worry about his inevitable fate. "I need to tell her..." he thought.
"Katara I love you so much. I have since the day we met..." "Aang, what are you trying to say?" Katara interrupted with tears about to fall down her face.
"Katara, .... My time on this world is coming to an end. I could feel it ever since I took Yakone's bending! And I didn't want you to worry..."
"Oh, you didn't want me to worry?! Well too late!" Katara exclaimed in a disappointing rage.
Aang could only stare at her, disappointed in himself. He knew he could trust Katara with this and she would be strong enough to handle it. He just didn't want to see the look that he was now seeing underneath her rage, heartache.
"I know I should have told you... You are so strong, you could have handled it."
Katara looked up him and with tears in her eyes still she smirked and replied, "You're right about that."
Aang gave a half smile and asked, "So are you still going to help me?" "Of course I will, Aang." Katara answered.
"Great! We'll start back up in the morning, I am beat. Are you coming to bed?"
Katara looked up at Aang then down at the mess they had made. "I will in a little while sweetie, I'm going to clean a little."
Aang looked at her, kind of concerned but not pushing the matter. "Alright sweetheart, I'll be in bed. And don't clean too much, it's just going to be the same mess in the morning."
Aang and Katara both had a small laugh and Katara watched as Aang left for the bedroom.
A few minutes had passed or so Katara thought. It had almost been an hour since her and Aang's talk. All she could do was think, "When will it happen?"
"Will I be ready to let him go?"...
As her thoughts raced, she decided to stop cleaning, fix some jasmine tea and go to sleep.
She walked to the kitchen still thinking heavily hoping the tea would ease her worries.
As the tea brewed she still remained in constant thought, "Why wouldn't he tell me?"
"How did I not see him getting weaker?"
All these questions without any answers...
The tea finished and made a loud whistle in the kitchen, knocking Katara out of her thoughts.
"Oh hush up, tea kettle!" she exclaimed to the tea pot.
Hearing the rustle in the kitchen, the Avatar awoke from his sleep and walked to the kitchen.
"Katara, is that you?" he asked.
"Yes sweetie, it's me."
"Why are you still awake?"
"I wasn't done cleaning and then I wanted tea and..."
"Katara," Aang interrupted her mid-sentence, "you were up thinking about our conversation, were you not?"
Seeming guilty Katara looked and said, "Yes."
"I knew I should've butted in earlier before my now nap. What are you thinking, love?"
"I just can't wrap my head around the fact that you are basically fading away from and there's nothing I can do about it... And how did I not see this? I'm your wife!"
"Yes, Katara, you are my wife, best friend, lover, mother of my children and even with being all these things, you still couldn't have seen this coming." Aang assured her.
"Okay Aang but why didn't you tell me sooner?"
He looked ashamed and then said, "I didn't want you to worry and I also... I just wanted it to come and go. I knew whether I told you or not, you would still be at the same amount of prepared."
Katara stared into Aang's eyes and whispered, "I love you, Aang."
Aang cupped her head in his hand and said back, "I love you too, Katara."
Holding each other as tight as they could, Aang then took her hand and said, "Let's go to bed..."
Hand in hand they walked to their bedroom where they held each other until they fell asleep.
