Public Enemy Number One
The man knelt beneath his power. His body moved against his will, without straining he bent the man to his will.
"You always say bloodbending is the most powerful thing in the world, but it isn't. The Avatar is. He took your bending away. What could be more powerful than that?""I made you what you are. You're mine."
Anger flowed through his veins as he approached their communications room. He hated the man who thought of him as a tool for revenge. As he stepped through the door, the two workers turned to receive him, "Well?"
"The Council has voted to create a task force to combat the Equalist rebellion. They have also designated you to 'Highly Dangerous' status, which no one else has in the Dangers list of the city."
"So, they begin. Are we ready to send the message?"
"Yes, sir. We are tapped in and can send any message we want, however if its too long they'll eventually trace it."
"Don't worry, the message will be brief but informative."
"Good evening, my fellow Equalists. This is your leader, Amon. As you have heard, the Republic Council has voted to make me public enemy number one, proving once again that the bending oppressors of this city will stop at nothing to quash our revolution. But we cannot be stopped. Our numbers grow stronger by the day. You no longer have to live in fear. The time has come for benders to experience fear."
Cleansing the Streets
The number of his followers grew by a massive margin after he revealed his power at the Revelation. The next steps had to be quick but careful. He needed training grounds for Chi Blockers so that they could combat the benders in the inevitable battles to come. They were set across the Burroughs so that they were accessible for the low class non-benders eager to join. The other part was taking down the other Triads, namely the Agni Kai's and the Red Monsoons. The Triple Threats shattered at the fall of their leader, and fell to the other Triads.
The next to fall was the Agni Kai's. They were violent, powerful, and indifferent to the changes of power around them. The bold gang even raided the Sato Estate. Nearly burning it down in the process.
It was this moment that brought Hiroshi Sato in the fold. When his home was robbed, he ran to save his daughter, Asami; only to find out that his wife was murdered. His hatred of benders was born from that night.
Amon approached him after that and soon realized the man had a deep seeded hatred that would only be fulfilled when bending was destroyed. As a personal gift to a huge back to the cause, Amon set out to destroy the Agni Kai's.
Chi Blockers had been whittling their numbers and bringing back captives to be cleansed for a week. Now the time had come to strike the heart. He, his Lieutenant, and two dozen Chi Blockers took to the Golden Serpent Burroughs, a high class area in Republic City.
Unlike the Triple Threats, the Agni Kai's were centered away from their violent turf borders, safe. Or so they thought.
The five Satomobiles halted before the shining home to the Agni Kai leader, Ruza. Four firebenders waited at the gate, "Who is it?"
Before the unbelieving guard could react, a Kali Stick struck him in the chest, sending him tumbling. The other three got up to fight but were quickly subdued when five Chi Blockers leapt at them and hit their pressure points, making them fall like pins.
Three Chi Blockers stayed behind to operate the doors while the rest continued on in the vehicles. They drove up to the front door where another two waited. Not letting them have a moment, bolas were immediately thrown to tangle the tired guards. The guards were dragged into one of the waiting Satomobiles as the chi blockers exited and began to prepare for a home invasion.
Two Satomobiles went around the back to ensure no escape. Six Equalist climbed up to the second story as the rest circled the house preparing to dive in. Working in pairs was important in case any benders inside were together.
Lieutenant counted down and the sledge hammer broke down the door. Two Equalists immediately rolled in while throwing gas canisters in. A surprised firebender choked on the gas as one of the chi blockers took him down.
Chi Blockers streamed in from all sides. His Lieutenant surged forward as two firebenders tried to fire. A beating Kali Sticks against bodies ensued as he let no mercy come.
They proceeded to the second floor where fighting was already ensuing from the six Equalists already up there. Amon pressed forward to a large central door. He threw the door back and saw his target as three chi blockers joined him.
Before him was Ruza and four firebenders. His chi blockers immediately threw their bolas as Amon sprinted for Ruza. Two guards were incapacitated, and tied up by bolas, one fired flames at the distant Equalists while the fourth guard faced off with Amon.
He punched his fist as an orange flame erupted. He swept his arms sideways, catching the forearm of the firebender, completely redirecting the flame. His left arm shot up around, giving him a hold over the shoulder of the defenseless bender.
He turned like a top, making the firebender join him. He let go, and the man shot forward into his master. The two were tangled by a phone wire and tripped. The other bender was subdued by the chi blockers. His men picked up the guards while he lifted up Ruza, "Its time to be equal."
He grabbed the neck of the man while his thumb pressed against the forehead of the firebender. His eyes narrowed frantically. He let go of the man who fell unconscious to the wood floor.
"Tie him up. Mr. Sato will want to deal with this man personally."
"Amon," It was his lieutenant, "Someone got a call out to the authorities."
"Very well, we have captured who we wanted. Load them up."
It was a most interesting opportunity that reached his ears when Hiroshi informed him that his daughter had found herself smitten for a street urchin, and worse for Mr. Sato, a firebender. But not any firebender, but the captain and teammate of Avatar Korra for the Pro-Bending Tournament.
As it turned out, they were broke and unable to pay for their participation in the tournament. In an stroke of genius, Sato took the initiative and agreed to sponsor the Fire Ferrets, giving Mr. Sato an unexpected in with the Avatar.
He was impressed by Hiroshi. He would not have balked had the man refused for his daughter to date a man whose same skills were what brought his wife's death. But he was strong enough to hold back his anger, and save it for another moment.
More interesting was that Avatar Korra joined Tarrlok's task force after refusing for a week. All it took was someone asking if she was afraid of Amon.
Hmm... Fear was what it was that held her back. Most... interesting.
The ChallengeThings had a downturn. The training camp in the Dragon Flats Burroughs was discovered and raided, capturing nearly all, both recruits and veterans. And now the proud Tarrlok and Korra were on radio trumpeting their victory.
A reporter demanded that she ask Korra a question, "Question for the Avatar! Amon remains at large. Why have you failed to locate him?"
The Avatar answered confidently, "You want to know why? Because Amon is hiding in the shadows like a coward." His Lieutenant gritted his teeth in anger, "Amon, I challenge you to a duel, no task force, no chi blockers, just the two of us tonight at midnight on Aang Memorial Island. Let's cut to the chase and settle this thing, if you're man enough to face me."
His followers looked on speechless and slowly turned their head to him, "It seems that I have received an invitation."
Voices in the NightIt was unbearable to wait. He could easily end this, but the message of the victory was just as important as the victory itself. He needed the Avatar to know fear, that she could not control events, not even her defeat.
The stroke of midnight came and left, and still they waited. Now they needed the Avatar to cross the entrance to the museum. Footsteps approached and finally there came their prey.
She walked across the dark entrance while stretching her arms. One of his men immediately threw his lengthened bola, clasping her ankles together as they pulled her in.
Amon watched from a corner as the Avatar immediately got up, kicking flames into the air for a light source. As they diminished, the chi blockers moved in. More fires shot out but were stopped as two more Equalist tied her arms with rope. She turned around as a group jumped at her. She responded with a kick that sent a blast of fire at them, repelling them and followed with another kick that created a slide of earth catapulting a second group that failed to jump forward.
That was the end of her resistance as two more Equalists took her distraction as a cue and struck her down with repeated strikes to her back. She lost her breath as her bending failed her.
The two men picked her up by her arms as another put a light on the ground so that the Avatar could face her worst fear.
He stepped forward, out of the shadow and into the light. He then saw her face clearly and for the first time. He had seen pictures of her before but felt that such images failed to grasp the soul of a human.
She was wide eyed and fearful, her blue eyes quivered at the sight of him as she gasped. "I received your invitation, young Avatar."
But as he looked down, another thought came across. She was beautiful. Young, naive, and foolish to face a man she knew nothing about, but at the same time trying to face her fear.
Suddenly, pity struck him. Why? She had done nothing to him, had she? She was just obligated to her duty as he was. He lift his hand forward, as the Avatar closed her eyes. He could feel that a tear was nearly falling.
What could he do? His followers around him, how could he spare her? Doubt crept in. But a thought took his mind. He then grabbed her chin, and had her look him in the eyes. The only mercy he could give was the promise of worse.
"Our showdown, while inevitable, is premature. Although it would be the simplest thing for me to take away your bending right now, I won't." Korra gasped until he assured her she would be spared. Now he needed to explain this or lose his followers.
"You'd only become a martyr. Benders of every nation would rally behind your untimely demise, but I assure you, I have a plan. And I'm saving you for last, then you'll get your duel, and I will destroy you." Fear came across her face as he explained his little mercy. It struck him odd that he felt this way, why did he wait? Her fall would assure the fall of all benders. He stood up, and with lightning speed hit forward. The pressure point buckled to his strike and the face of fear was replaced with fading consciousness. He backed away as she drifted down into a forced sleep.
He looked to his followers, "Go."
"I'm curious to see who the first to come to the Avatar's rescue is."
They nodded hesitantly and left when he repeated the order. When they were gone he backed into a deep and dark space where the light of the lamp couldn't pierce.
Hours passed and nothing occurred until a voice could be heard, "Korra!" It was undoubtedly the son of Aang, Tenzin.
And Korra's weakened response was, "Aang?"
"Korra, are you alright?" His voice held fear. Nor for himself, but for her, "What happened? Was Amon here?"
"Yeah, he ambushed me." She spoke as if it happened to someone else.
"Did he... did he take your bending away?"
She looked down at her hand as she created a ball of fire in it before quickly snuffing it out, "No, I'm okay."
Relief hit him, "Ah, thank goodness."
But Korra broke. Tears escaped her eyes as she sobbed uncontrollably. Despite himself, he almost stepped forward as she embraced her master, "I was so terrified, I felt so helpless."
He spoke gently, reassuring her, "It's all right, the nightmare is over." He clenched his fist in... in what?
She sat up, wiping her tears away, "You... you were right... I've been scared this whole time. I've never felt like this before and... and Tenzin, I don't know what to do!" She again buried her face in Tenzin's chest, seeking his comfort.
He looked down, knowing she would just fear and despise him. Tenzin calmly answered, "Admitting your fears is the first and most difficult step in overcoming them."
He had seen enough. He backed further into the shadows, silently leaving the battered museum for his speedboat. He didn't understand it, what compelled him to spare her? To feel for her? To be envious when she sought the comfort of Tenzin? What was it?
- This chapter clearly has Amorra shipping as a tip of the hat to those fans. I myself think it has interesting concepts.
