Zuko, Iroh, and their men are completely absent from this chapter.

The chapter proceeds exactly as it is until after Aang reveals that he and Katara fell right into the booby trap on the ship, except that Kya and all the warriors are with their fellow villagers.

Kya said, "Katara, you shouldn't have gone on that ship! Now we could be in danger!"

The chapter continues until when Sokka demands that Aang is banished from their village.

Katara said, "Mum, Dad, you can't let Sokka do this."

Kya turned to her husband.

"I'll leave the decision to you, Hakoda."

Hakoda walked up to his daughter, Aang, and Appa.

Hakoda said, "Katara, you are going to find a waterbender. Aang, could you officially fly our family tot he North Pole."

Sokka and Katara glance at each other in surprise.

Aang smiled and yelled "You got it. Are we leaving now?"

Hakoda said, "Not so fast. I have to ask my wife and children and make sure it's okay with them."

He turned to face his wife and their kids.

Hakoda said, "Kya."

Kya said, "There aren't waterbenders in the South Pole. If this is Katara's one chance at becoming a waterbender, then let's go."

Hakoda said, "Sokka."

Sokka said, "Yeah, sure, why not?"

Hakoda said, "Katara, you've never left home before. The final decision is yours."

Katara smiled as she said, "Definitely."

Hakoda smiled back at her with pride.

Kanna approached her son and daughter-in-law.

Kanna held sleeping bags in her hands as she said, "You'll be needing these. You have a long journey ahead of you."

Kanna walks over to Katara.

Kanna said, "It's been so long since I've had hope, but you brought it back to life, my little waterbender."

Kya said, "It's been so long since we've all had hope."

Hakoda said, "That's for sure and it's you who brought it back to life, Katara."

Kanna addresses her grandson.

"And you my brave warrior, be nice to your sister.'

Kanna hugs Sokka who pats her back.

Sokka said, "Yeah, okay, Gran."

Hakoda said, "Bato."

A tall young beardless man with a wolftail stepped forward.

"Yes, Hakoda."

"Until my return, you are in charge of the South Pole."

Bato bowed before his chieftain.

Hakoda said, "Goodbye, my friend."

They hugged.

Bato said, "Please return safely, all of you."

The Water Tribe family and Aang sit atop Appa. Appa growls. Aang sits on top of Appa's head, while the family sit in the saddle."

Aang said, "Yip-yip!"

Sokka startles at the sudden movement as Appa grunts and beats the tundra with his tail. He takes flight and soars through the air.

Katara said, "You did it, Aang!"

Sokka said, "He's flying! "He's flying! Mum, Dad, Katara, he's-

Katara smirks at her brother.

Sokka said, "I mean, he's flying. Big deal. "

Appa rises higher into the sky.

A beautiful sunrise peaks above some cliffs. The beams of the morning sun reflect on the water, bathing the shore in yellow light. Appa chewed on some grass while the smoke of the campfire rose to the sky. Sokka lay in a blue sleeping bag next to the fire. Hakoda and Kya were breakfasting around the fire. Aang and Katara were atop Appa. Aang sat on Appa's head and checked the knots that tie the reins to Appa's horns. Katara sat on the saddle and fiddled with their luggage.

Aang said, "Wait till you see it, Katara! The air temple is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Kya said, "Aang, I know you're excited, but it's been a hundred years since you've been home.

Aang said, "That's why I'm so excited!

Hakoda said, "it's just a lot can just change in that time.

Aang said, "I know, but I need to see it for myself.

Aang jumped off Appa and walked over to Sokka.

Sokka looked up at Aang.

Aang said, "wake up, Sokka. Air Temple here we come.

Sokka grunted, "Sleep now. Temple later.

Sokka falls back asleep; Aang grabs a small thin stick.

He said as he moved the stick up and down the sleeping bag, only touching Sokka with the tip of it "Sokka! Wake up! There's a prickle snake in your sleeping bag!"

Sokka yelled out in horror as he rose and hopped around, still inside the sleeping bag "get it off! Get if off!"

After two hops, Sokka slams flat to the ground.

His mother, father, and sister giggle as he fell over. Aang said, "great! You're awake! Let's go!"

Hakoda said, "You kids go and have fun. Come and pick us up when you get back."

Kya said, "And please be careful, all four of you."

Aang said, "Don't worry. We will."

Appa flew above the clouds in a mountain range, Aang and Katara sitting atop his head while Sokka and Kya sat back in the saddle. Sokka clutched his stomach as it growls.

He said, "Hey, stomach! Be quiet, alright? I'm trying to find us some food."

Sokka went through the luggage and got out a bag, sticks his hand in, goes through it, then turns the bag upside down to pour the contents into his hand. Only a few crumbs fall into it.

Sokka said, "hey! Who ate all my blubbered seal jerky?"

Aang said, "Oh that was food? I used it to start the campfire last night.

Sokka said, "No wonder the flames smelled so good."

Appa raced past and ascend sot some mountains.

Aang said, "The Patola mountain range! We're almost there!

Katara said, "Aang, before we get to the temple, I want to talk to you about the airbenders.

Aang said, "what about them?'

Katara said, "I just want you to be prepared for what you might see. The Fire Nation is ruthless. They almost killed my mother, and they could have done the same to your people.

Aang said, "Just because no one has seen an airbender, doesn't mean the Fire Nation killed them all. They probably escaped!"

Katara said, "I know it's hard to accept."

Aang said, "You don't understand, Katara. The only way to get to an airbender temple is on a flying bison and I doubt the Fire Nation has any flying bison. Right, Appa?'

Appa turned a she flew past to begin a last ascend up the side of a mountain.

Aang cried, "Yip yip!" as Appa flew up the mountain and through the clouds, turning behind the flank of a mountain

Appa emerged from behind the flank and turned further upwards. Aang held onto the reins, Katara and Kya's eyes are closed, and Sokka holds on tight to Appa's fur and saddle respectively. Appa flies over the rocks and into the sky again. He flies over a last ridge covered with trees, floating towards a large temple.

Aang said, "There it is. The Southern Air temple."

Katara said, "Aang, it's amazing!"

Appa has landed at the base of snow-covered stairs.

Aang, and his companions make their way up the mountain trail. Aang runs at the front.

Sokka asked, "so, when do I get something to eat?"

His sister scolded him "You're lucky enough to be one of the first outsiders to ever visit an airbender temple, and all you can think about is food.'

Sokka said 'I'm just a simple with some simple needs, Mum."

Aang pointed at a stadium consisting of many tall poles as he said, "So that's where my friends and I would play airball."

Everything proceeds as it is, until when Aang says that whoever is the Air Temple sanctuary might help him figure out this whole Avatar thing.

Sokka said, "And whoever is in there might have a medley of delicious cured meats!

Sokka charged the door, but it does not budge and he smacks into it headfirst. He turns puts his back to it, trying to push the giant door open.

When the door does not move, he asks, "Wait, what did you just say?"

Aang said, "Oops."
