Sokka introduces Katara
And this is Katara, my flying sister.
This article is considered humorous and should not be treated too seriously.

Bryan: I remember until mid-way through first season I never even knew what shipping was, and then suddenly on the Internet...
Mike: ...Suddenly on the Internet you had writing about shipping and I was like, "What is this? What is this phenomenon about?"
Bryan: Yeah. I was all like "They're shipping love to each other?"

Shipping refers to relationships between characters, often devised beyond the parameters of canon by rabid adoring fans. They are commonly designated with portmanteau couple names, usually derived by combining the characters' names or words that accurately describe them. As an interesting canon example, "Omashu" is derived from the two earthbending lovers Oma and Shu. Common reasons that support shipping include extensive companionship, obvious movements by either character, unobvious or grating movements by either character, the simple fact that they look cute together, the simple fact that they don't look cute together and even heated antagonism. Due to the robust number of characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, its shipping scene is simply colossal.

Fans will often have a 'fan preferred couple', known throughout many fandoms as a 'one true pairing' (OTP), which they will attempt to find reasons to substantiate, as well as to disregard other possible matches with these characters. Canon and logic are often thrown out the window when it comes to shipping.
The faint of heart or stolid of mind may wish to turn back now.

The rest of us can attempt to make sense of these things or simply bask in their cuteness, audacity, or sheer insanity.

History[]

"Same Scene As Each Other + Talked To Each Other - Chemistry = True Love "
— Shipping Math

A shipping usually begins when two people see chemistry between two (or more, don't ask) characters. Other times, people make a ship for fun, in an attempt to ship off unpaired characters, or non-canon ships that could happen but didn't. The more outlandish are designated as "crack ships" (Ozai being comforted by the tree in "Zuko Alone" is one such example), however possible shippings such as Tokka are not labelled as such. Fans also pair off unpaired characters, so pairings like Smeller Lee are bound to happen.

NOTE: The following section may contain material offensive to some, discretion is advised.

Shippings[]

Shipping wars[]

Many 'shipping wars' have occurred in the fandom, the most famous being Zutara (it's so obvious) and Kataang (it's so canon). Many fans will attempt to pair off two characters for the sake of their favorite shipping, for example, many people pair off Aang with Toph, On Ji, Meng, and even Mai to make it possible for Zutara. Likewise, Kataangers pair off Mai and Zuko, Zuko and June, and many more plus a Mary Sue or two – even Sokka. However, there have been even bloodier Shipping Wars, like The Rock VS. Krock, two of the only sane shippings in the whole show, the others being Boomerokka and Swordka. Of course, the arguably most 'canon' ship is My Cabbages.
