Perhaps the Avatar
Sedgley is one of the main protagonists of Avatar to succeed Avatar Lyn.and is quite possibly the Waterbending
Part of the 'Waterbabies' generation, he was among many of the Waterbending children abandoned following the death of Avatar Lyn. He was left at AG.and raised by Mother Leliita, Dianne and the other nuns. Here he developed a strong, almost brother-like bond with and Erik. In order to help protect Sedgley, Mother Leliita changed his birth certificate so it was documented that he was born in 403
It was revealed by Erik that when they were young, Sedgley and Dover wandered over the moors surrounding Redwall looking to feed a beagle-bear. When the animal attacked, Erik stepped in and threw a leg of ham to distract it and they could escape safely. Sedgley, Dover and Erik have been best friends ever since.
Journey to Haven
In 421 AG, when he was seventeen, Sedgley - along with Sedgley and Erik - found out that either he or Dover was to be the next Waterbending Avatar, to succeed Avatar Lyn. Following Mother Leliita's dying wishes, the three began their descent to .It was here that they had their first real fight and met Anurna, a firebender who joined them on their quest. Anurna helped them get out of Gao Lin through the illegal .
On his way to Chan Dai, he met a family from the Northern Water Tribe. While camping with them, he learnt the art of healing from their daughter, Althea.
Once arriving in Chan Dai, he and his friends discovered that the town was being run by a criminal gang called The Bloody Knuckles. He and Dover quickly found their secret hideout and planned on stealing back Hu's waterbending scrolls from them, when they were both captured and quickly brought to Alphonse - the leader of the gang. Alphonse threatened to send them to the Clandestines but, following some frightening revelations and torture, Sedgley, with the help of Anurna and Erik, was able to escape their hideout with Dover and leave Chan Dai safely.
After leaving Chan Dai, Sedgley and company entered the Maderian forest, where they were attacked by an angry bat and separated. It was when he was by himself in the woods that Sedgley had a hallucination of Dover getting hit by an Inducer and then captured by the Clandestines as the Avatar. This revealed his insecurities about whether he was the Avatar or not. After running away from his vision, Sedgley eventually came across Dover, who he hugged, glad his friend was still alive, not long before they heard a gunshot of which they presumed was Erik's gun. They ran towards the sound but were captured by Yuka and his men, and then taken to the chief of Maderia as prisoners along with the others. It was in Maderia where Chief Aran agreed to help teach him and Dover plantbending. After practicing for days with no avail, he and Dover ventured back into the forest to connect with nature.
After living in the forest for almost a week, Sedgley showed Dover that the Maderia's Mother Tree was on fire, and they agreed to go help the city instead of resuming their training. After getting to the city, Sedgley saved Erik from falling from the Mother Tree and they soon met up with Anurna, who warned them that the Clandestines were strong. He and the others then decided that it was best to leave the city for the Avatar's safety. Following a brief encounter with Livia, Sedgley witnessed Yuka's death at the hands of the Clandestine general, Miss Zaida. In a fight with her and her troops, Sedgley witnessed, much to his chagrin, Dover plantbending, before escaping the city and Miss Zaida unharmed.
Feeling bad about not being able to plantbend, Dover went for a walk away from their campsite in the forest. During his walk, he stumbled upon a pair of criminals who were picking what he later found out to be illegal drugs and decided to stop them in order to redeem his feelings about himself. After sneaking away from his friends that night, he discovered that Dover had followed him to the fight, where they had an argument about the identity of the Avatar. They soon got too loud and woke up the criminals and the rest of their
gang, who attacked them. After learning about their operation, he and Dover destroyed the plants that the drugs were synthesised from. During the brawl, Sedgley was hit with a poison dart, but they managed to leave relatively unharmed when the criminals fled after a bullet (shot by Erik accidentally) came out of the forest. Later, after they left their campsite and entered the Wasteland, Sedgley's condition worsened as he began to feel the effects of the poison dart.
Soon, Sedgley collapsed in the Wasteland due to the poison in his bloodstream, and was more or less unconscious for the rest of the trip. His body ultimately made it to Sheker's healing hut in the Hebikumo Tribe's campsite, where Dover agreed to let Sheker thrust Sedgley into the Spirit World to help him recover his inner demons. Soon after that Sedgley's spirit was in the Spirit World, where he saw Avatar Korra, Avatar Ji Bao, Avatar Kaen and Avatar Lyn. He tried to ask them if he was the Avatar yet they ran away from him. He tried to chase them but was ensnared in vines. Avatar Lyn eventually came to him and explained that if he believed in him himself he would achieve great things, and that he had to stay strong. This spurred him to awake from his unconscious state, waking up in the healing hut next to his friends. That night though, he couldn't go to sleep because he was so excited about himself apparently being the Avatar.
Sedgley is described by Mother Leliita as, "headstrong and courageous, developed into a mature young man who stuck by his friends and his morals. He knew how to set goals, and achieve outcomes."With this in mind, he was more concerned with their actions and what they said when in Gao Lin, anxious that someone might overhear. He was also a bit wary of Anurna, suspecting that she may have other motives.
He believes in honour and upholding the Avatar tradition of being courageous; thoughtlessly helping a woman in need in. He sometimes wavers between doubt and surety of him being the Avatar, being particularly doubtful in testing situations. However, in these situations, he is always determined to do his best.
Headstrong and with a slight temper, the possibility of being the Avatar has made him a little more harsh towards Sedgley, snapping occasionally and becoming jealous of his attributes. He, as well as Dover, often don't think things through; usually going with their first idea, often with good intentions, but not regarding the consequences of their actions.
It was shown when learning healing that, despite being a fast learner, Sedgley can become distracted while learning new disciplines. He can also be quite gullible at times; honestly believing that Althea could die when she cut her arm with some ice.
One of his biggest insecurities is the question of who is the Avatar. He desperately wants to be the Avatar and any failure to perform a task, be it plantbending or going into the Avatar State in Chan Dai, makes him question his ability, and whether or not he is worthy of being the Avatar. These feelings occasionally result in some animosity towards Dover. This manifested in his hallucination whilst in the Maderian forest.
Sedgley is known to be a better fighter than Dover - skilled in performing various liquid-based attacks and able to change the physical state of water into ice. He stores most of his water in a skin, shared by himself and Dover, and uses it mostly to create tendrils and whips of water but is also able to manipulate the volume of this water and utilise wave-like attacks. As his waterbending skills developed, he has been able to perform a number of impressive feats, including opening a waterfall and keeping rain and snow from falling on him so as to stay dry. In Maderia, Sedgley managed to catch a plummeting Erik in a tendril of water.
After learning from the Northern Healers, his skills greatly increased, allowing him to bend water without seeing it and while tied up, using just his hands and fingers. He was shown in Chapter 8 to be able to use the octopus form, presumably learnt from the stolen waterbending scroll, to pick up allies from the ground and attack enemies simultaneously. He can also switch between water's liquid and gaseous states with ease, able to shoot ice shards with enough accuracy to pin the bows of archers to trees 20 metres away.
Following his training with Aran, Sedgley was able to pull water out of vegetation and use it as normal water, able to pull water out of trees and freeze enemies in it.
Sedgley learnt healing infrom Althea. Despite being initially struggling, he soon picked it up quite fast; faster than Althea had ever seen.
Sedgley and Dover practised their hand-to-hand combat at Redwall and are apparently proficient at it. Though this has never been seen in the fanon. It can be assumed that, like waterbending, Sedgley is better than Dover, as he is described as having a larger build.
His combat skills have developed remarkably. For example, whilst tied up in The Bloody Knuckles' base and after freeing his hands using waterbending, he was able to perform a handstand while his legs were still bound and have his enemy break the chair he was tied to. He is shown to be more offensive than Dover, using punches and kicks to fight rather than avoiding and blocking.
- 'Sedgley' means 'from the sword meadow.' The writer was originally planning on appropriating Avatar: The Last Airbender and Sokka's new name was to be Sedgley - because he used a sword. When that idea was scrapped, the writer kept this name anyway.
- The writer always wanted to write for a waterbending Avatar, but then The Legend of Korra came out and he had to set it four generations later.
- Sedgley is the only one who learnt healing. It can be assumed that he tried to teach Dover, but Dover was unable to learn the technique.
