|Past and Present|
April 27, 2011
This is chapter 2 of the Those Bored Eyes series. I hope you enjoy it. This story will be about Mai's past life in the Fire Nation. This chapter will not be as long as the other chapters, but I still think it should be pretty interesting. Hope you like it!

Chapter 2: Past and Present
Azula was as relentless as she had been when we were kids. Today we walked a huge amount of miles. I probably broke some kind of walking record. Ever since we left Omashu it seems as though Azula is in some kind of trance. She thinks of nothing but capturing Zuko, Iroh, and the Avatar kid. I, on the other hand, really don't care for any of them.
"Azula," I said at last, "this is ridiculous. We've been walking around all week and we haven't seen any signs of Zuko or the Avatar. Can we please stop and rest?"
"Mai," Azula replied, "do you wish to return to Omashu?"
"I-" I didn't know what to say. I hated Omashu, but I was exhausted from walking around.
"Fine," I said, "I'll keep walking." We spent the rest of the afternoon searching without any luck. By the end of the day I was still upset and Azula had gotten grumpy. Ty Lee appeared to be the happy person, as usual.
"Okay," I said when I saw a nice clear field, "I'm stopping here, with or without you, Azula."
"This looks like a good camp ground." Ty Lee said, "What about you, Azula?"
"Fine," Azula sighed, "but if we are to catch Zuko and the Avatar we need to stop spending so much time resting." Yeah right! We never rested. I yawned and spread out my sleeping roll. Ty Lee went off to find a stream to bathe in. Azula went with her. I decided to wait until dark for my bath. When the sun finally set, I wandered off the stream. However, when I arrived, I discovered a dirty, fish infested stream. How was I supposed to get clean in that? I walked back to camp.
"That was fast," Ty Lee said when I walked into camp.
"How did you two even get clean?" I asked.
"Well," started Ty Lee, "first I cleaned my feet, then my hair, and then-"
"Never mind," I sighed.
I walked over to my sleeping spot at the camp ground and slipped into my bed roll. I was so tired.
"Good night Mai," Ty Lee said.
"Good night," I responded quietly. I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep, but I simply couldn't. I was wide awake. I looked to see if Ty Lee was awake. She was writing in her journal. At least she has something to do, I thought. I closed my eyes again, and thought about random stuff. Then I thought about Zuko. Yes, I know, he's supposed to be my enemy, but I wondered what it would be like if he wasn't. Maybe he would be here and we could capture the Avatar together. Then, I remembered all of the fun we had together with Azula, and Ty Lee.
I walked into class for the first time. I was so nervous. My parents had insisted I attend this school. It had a good reputation, and it was an all girls' school. I blushed when I saw that I was the last person to arrive. Everyone just stared as the teacher welcomed me.
"Well hello Mai!" my teacher said, "Class, this is your new classmate, Mai."
I was completely embarrassed and I walked straight to my desk. The girl sitting next to me smiled. She had a long braid and fluffy bangs, unlike my straight ones.
"Hi there," she said, smiling, "I'm Ty Lee."
"Quiet, Ty Lee," the teacher said. Ty Lee quieted down and class started. Most of my class work was pretty boring. The usual stuff, mathematics, Fire Nation history, and science stuff. As soon as class was over I prepared for recess alone.
"Hey Mai," Ty Lee asked, "Why don't you come play with me?"
"Sure," I said smiling. I hadn't expected friendliness from my classmates. Ty Lee led me to where another girl was waiting for her.
"Hurry Ty Lee," she said, "recess will be over by the time we get to playing." This girl had a hint of bossiness about her, and I was glad I had Ty Lee with me.
"I know Azula," Ty Lee said, "I just wanted to invite Mai here to play with us."   "All right then," Azula said. We played through recess then finished the rest of the school day. This became our regular schedule. After a few months I became quite close to Ty Lee and Azula. Azula, I learned, was actually princess of the Fire Nation. Her brother, Zuko the prince, I found extremely interesting. One day Azula invited Ty Lee and me to the palace.
"What should we do today?" Ty Lee asked.
"How about we see who can firebend the best?" Azula said.   "What?" Ty Lee asked, "But I can't bend and neither can Mai."
"I know," Azula said, "so of course I'd win."
"How about we do something else," Ty Lee said innocently. I sighed and went and sat down by a tall tree. I noticed Zuko approaching with his mother. He looked so cute in his royal Fire Nation outfit. I blushed, but quickly stopped when I noticed Azula staring at me. How embarrassing!
I walked back to where Ty Lee and Azula were playing and waited for Zuko to come over.
"Hi Zuko," I said quietly when he arrived.
"Hello Mai," he said, smiling. Was it possible that he liked me? I hoped so.
"What are we playing?" Zuko asked.
"How about this," Azula said, "let's play Knock the Apple off of someone's head."
"How do you play that?" Zuko once again asked. "I'll show you," she said motioning for me to come forward. She took an apple from her pocket and sat it on my head.
"All right," Azula said, "you have to try to get the apple to fall off the person's head without touching it."
Azula sent a wave of fire hurdling towards me, as she was a firebender. The apple on my head lit on fire. I panicked. Zuko rushed towards me to try and save me. Azula's face now had a mean sneer on it. Zuko tripped and fell on me. We both landed in the fountain behind us, stacked on top of each other.
"Aww!" Ty Lee said smiling at us, "how cute!" I yelled and said, "You are such-ugh!" I stomped away angrily. Zuko ran to his mother, and I heard him say, "Girls are crazy!" These girls were, anyway.
Ever since then, my relationship with Azula was damaged forever. However, my relationship with Zuko was not.
Back to the Present...
I looked up. I had definitely let my memories come back too strongly. At least I was tired now. I rolled over, and shut my eyes for the night.
The next morning I woke up, and saw Azula and Ty Lee talking. I walked over to where they were.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Ty Lee has found a clue," Azula said showing me a bundle of fur.
"Isn't it soft looking?!?" Ty Lee exclaimed happily.
"It's just fur," I said, "what does that have to do with anything?"   "It has to do with our targets, Mai," Azula replied.   "White fur is related to Zuko?" I asked, sarcastically.
"Ugh," Azula said angrily, "not Zuko. The Avatar!" I kept silent. What was she talking about?   "Do you remember the Avatar's flying animal?" she asked.
"Oh, that," I said, "Yes, I remember."
"This fur is from that animal. If we can follow the fur we can find the Avatar!" Azula said triumphantly. "Oh how exciting!"
Ty Lee said, "isn't it Mai?"
"I suppose," I replied. Hopefully this wouldn't be another useless search for our targets. I sighed, and began packing our stuff.
