Zoja's parents marriage fell somewhere in the grey area between being arraigned and being for love. Kanonuk was the son of one of the Council members for the late Chief Arnook, and Isra was the second daughter of the Governor of one of the Northern Provinces. The attraction was instant, though they made quite the odd looking couple, and both could see the potential of their union.

Several years and a move to Republic City later, and the family had become respected members of society, both parents with important diplomatic positions inside the City Hall. Both have aspirations of being elected to be the representative of their own nation on the United Republic Council, but so far it is just a pipe dream, though in these troubled times, with Council Members tragically dying and such, the dream is quite attainable.

Zoja spent much of her childhood abroad, and indeed the first ten years of her education consisted of attending the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, as was her birthright. Private tutors in both waterbending forms were arraigned for her from both the North and South Pole, much to her father's chagrin. He had little choice in the matter though, as in the Royal Academy for girls, one combat class is a mandatory part of the curriculum each year. If she had not been allowed to do an independent study in Combative Waterbending, she would merely have been enrolled in a non-bending combat class.

Graduating at sixteen she moved back home in order to study at Republic City University against her family's better judgment. By then the climate of Republic City had begun to corrode, and both Isra and Kanonuk would have rather their children stay safely in their respective boarding schools.

Halfway through completing her second year of pre-Law at Republic City University, Zoja met a boy. He was a rather opinionated young man who spent more of his time at the gym than anywhere else. Zoja thought he was the bees knees, and soon they were dating, to the further disapproval of her parents. He and his earthbending buddy were looking to put together a team, and he invited Zoja to join, since they were short one waterbender.

The Seal Lions was their team name. They were the underdogs of the 168 AG Spring Qualifier, and surprised everyone with their chemistry. Although they didn't make first place, they did qualify for the league, and once in the league they were a breakout sensation. It would not, however, be until the following year that they made it to the top sixteen, and received the honor of eligibility to compete in the Tournament. Or at least they would have.

The last round had all but been decided, two of the opposing team were already in the water, and she and her two teammates were closing in on the last. Thinking the match was in the bag, they got sloppy, and with a well placed clay disk to the team's earthbender's abdomen, the swift kick he'd been executing hampered his balance, and he toppled to the side. Zoja, who'd been focusing on their opponent and on her dwindling reservoir of water was completely blindsided as the man crashed into her, knocking helmets with a loud crack that left her dazed for a few seconds. A few seconds was all it took for them both to tumble over the ropes of the side of the arena.

They still won, and no foul was issued, but because of the awkward jumble of two smacking the water together, Zoja walked away with a broken wrist, a fractured collarbone, a sprained shoulder, and a severe case of whiplash. The team's earthbender walked away without a scratch.

The sports tabloids had a field day with the story, printing a huge picture of them hurtling towards the water above, and speculating on the cause of such carelessness below. Only a day later, her then boyfriend announced to the press that they had decided to cut her from the team, were now seeking a replacement waterbender, upon being pressed by the reporter, he admitted that he had broken up with her as well. Zoja, who had not been privy to this development, got to read about it in the papers the following morning, her arm in a sling strung to the ceiling. Humiliated by the scandal and the unwanted attention that followed, Zoja was happy to take the following season off to heal. Perhaps it was for the best, as it was while she was moping at home in bed and focusing on her studies at school, her arm in a cast, that Amon and the Equalists struck. She could have lost her bending along with many of her fellow benders.

With a body on the mend, Zoja began to train again for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, the Seal Lions was no longer an option and no other team seemed to want to pick her up, despite having qualified for the Fall Tournament a couple years back. It was probably partly due to her abilities still not healed to maximum, along with the stigma of having someone along who had had such a string of bad luck. With time running out, she is beginning to worry. If she can't find a team, she won't get to play at all this season! And if she cannot play this season, how is she going to pound her stupid ex-boyfriend's face into the arena floor?!

Equalists

Hyun Geming was born the third child of a wealthy family that made most of its fortune in his grandparents' time. As such, he had the best education and the most toys. The education part he loved—he loved everything about school, from the arts to the sciences. He delighted teachers with his aptitude and his enthusiasm. Somewhere along the line his mother had him enrolled in a martial arts school, arguing something about "learning discipline" and other such things. He didn't excel so much at this, and grumbled somewhat at the time it took away from other pursuits, but he was not allowed to quit.

He was raised with an eye to making him a proper member of high society. It worked to a point, but—whether in spite of or because of all the privileges he enjoyed—he had the misfortune in his first year of college to develop a social conscience. It was, of course, required that he go to Republic City University and, of course, he didn't object to this. After some discussion with his parents it was decided that he would pursue the study of the law, a lawyer being a respectable profession for someone in his position. But while the law interested him, in his first semester he chanced to take a sociology course and became fascinated, albeit disturbed, by the study of social and economic inequality.

In his second semester, he heard some acquaintances whispering about an underground group that wanted to fight against inequality. This was his first introduction to the Equalists. He attended a meeting—a small affair in the back room of a bar, not a huge rally—and became convinced of the righteousness of the cause. When the Council began cracking down on Equalist activity, enacting the curfew against non-benders and making association with Equalists illegal, his enthusiasm was only inflamed. He began attending more meetings, donating his pocket money to the cause, and learning to chi block.

Then Amon was unmasked.

Despite feeling betrayed, Hyun remains angry about the political situation in Republic City—the gangs that prey on nonbenders, the abuses of power perpetrated by the Council and especially the late Councilman Tarrlok—and therefore loyal to the Equalist cause, even if there isn't really anything left to be loyal to.

Pro-bender

Yi Lu is, too say the least, an eccentric individual, but you could probably tell that before you even ever met him. He incorrectly writes his name as "一" – the number one – even though his name is pronounced differently. That alone says a lot. Mostly that he's cocky, boisterous and a bit of an asshole. He tends to communicate through jokes and insults, even to those few he deems worthy of his respect. He's so playful that it's hard to tell when his words are serious, but the astute observer can tell that he goes easier on some people than others. Well, when he likes them. Which isn't often. Not surprisingly, a lot of people don't care what he thinks of them, given that on top of his aforementioned habits he's notoriously undisciplined, reckless and probably couldn't beat a Fire ferret in a game of checkers.

Yi's not totally worthless, though. In fact, that's the fascinating part about him. Somewhere under all that bravado and mild insanity there's a raging fire burning inside Yi that drives him to win. Although he's constantly joking around, his wrath is legendary, and those in the Pro-bending B-League that have been on the receiving end of it can attest to its ferocity. Further, while not at all book smart, Yi's clever and creative. Often he pulls off stunts that no one expects and fewer expect to succeed. The result is a young man that many analysts have said possesses the most raw talent of any Firebender in the league, but has remained untapped due to a wild and undisciplined personality.

This has provided quite the spectacle for Pro Bending fans. Yi is the Pro Bender that every fan loves to hate. Over the course of his two years in the B-Leagues, Yi has had 18 different teammates. All were drawn in by the young man's potential, and all quit the squad at the first chance they got. Even if they can deal with – or even like – Yi's personality, the stunts he pulls in the ring quickly drive them mad. Yi's known for drawing matches out by letting his opponents get up if they fall, toying with them to extend the fight to another round, or in one famous instance even offering up his teammates as "freebies" so he can fight three on one. The announcer often introduces him as, "The Firebender with the most hat tricks in B-League history, and also the most blown games through sheer arrogance."

Most people don't know where Yi came from, and most don't care. Neither does Yi, really. He doesn't see it as anything special. On that subject, at least, he's probably right. His childhood could be called unique, maybe even interesting, but not special. His mother, Chun Lu, was a dancer who specialized in a very specific subset of the art, most often involving poles and a lack of clothing. She was a very sweet girl, but it's clear that Yi inherited his intellectual ineptitude from her side of the gene pool. This was perhaps what drew Yi's father to her. A Fire Nation sailor of no real consequence who fancied hard liquor and naïve women, often together, Yi's father had charmed his way into the beds of dozens of young women along the Earth Kingdom's west coast, and Republic City was something of a Mecca for him. Of all the women he left behind in the metropolis, however, only Chun was deemed unlucky enough by fate or fortune to be left while bearing his child.

To her credit, sweet Chun took it all in stride, and she raised young Yi with all the love and care that a mother should. Sure, occasionally she'd forget to hire a sitter and return home to find Yi crawling around with a jar on his head, but she did the best she could. As Yi grew older, he neglected much of his studies and fell in with a group of local hoodlums. They weren't really an organized gang so much as a bunch of delinquents playing practical jokes on the neighborhood and getting into the occasional scuffle, but it still wasn't exactly a positive life experience. His mother didn't really know any better, so she did little to discourage it. She did, however, eventually suggest that Yi try his hand at Pro Bending, and since his mother was perhaps the one person Yi knew that he truly loved, he decided to give it a try. He found that he was something of a natural at the sport, and soon enough he'd ditched his crew of ne'er do wells for the local gym.

That was five years ago, and now Yi stands at the verge of potentially digging himself out of the lower class rut that so few in Republic City are able to escape. Will he finally find the right teammates, friends, or mentors to push him forward as a Pro Bender and a person? Or will he forever be known as just another case of wasted potential, squandered by a lack of discipline and a massive ego?
