Meditations

Aten hated meditating. He was good at it, too good. He could never prevent his mind from wandering to the day he lost his family, he lost everything.
"Goodnight, Aten. Thank you for doing this." Ming gave him a small, sad smile as she entered their shared tent to go to sleep. Despite his feelings for her, he was still annoyed that she asked him to do this. His past was that. His past. And he didn't want to tell her.

He was still fuming as he began to slow his breathing, the soft glow of the moon and the warm breeze helping him calm down. He looked up at the moon, feeling something. Not a pull or a tug, just something. He closed his eyes and began to meditate. Well, try to. He couldn't ignore that glowing orb.
"There's a person up there," he thought absent mindedly. "A powerful, important person."
He opened his eyes. "Now, how did I know that?" He was confused. He had felt a pull to the moon before, but never had he stated that there was someone up there. He tried to push it out of his mind, and mostly succeeded, although he was still questioning himself.
"It's because you're important."
Aten had heard that voice many times before, in his dreams and memories. He opened his eyes slowly, adjusting to the gloom. In front of him, he could make out a shape. Her shape. He was reaching out to her, and her him, then suddenly, he was in his mothers arms, eight years old again.

"Mother?" He was curled in her arms, breathing in her scent.
"Hello, darling." She looked down at him and smiled. "Did you miss me? It's been a while."
Aten couldn't find his voice. All he could do was stare at her face. She hadn't changed at all.
"Now, listen darling, I haven't got long. You aren't strong enough yet. Do you remember the last thing I said to you?"
Aten nodded. "You said that I had to be the light, and I had to guide people to peace and truth. But, I don't know what you mean!
"That's all right. It will be important later, but not now. I have to leave soon. Do you trust me Aten?"
"Of course I do! More than anyone in the world!"
"Then trust me to tell you to trust Ming. You need her more than you know. Tell her the truth, let her teach you as much as she can. You need to learn Chi-blocking, it might save your life. And the last thing. Always remember, I love you, and I will always be with you, not matter what. Don't fret, I'll see you again."

She faded away, and Aten was left alone. He felt the same way when she left the first time, desolate and alone. But, he wasn't alone, not anymore. He had Ming, and he now had his mother. He would work as hard as he could to follow her instructions, until she appeared again. The sooner he mastered himself, his chi, his life, the sooner he could be free.
