Life is Too Short
November 21st, 2012
It's a sad day for Team Avatar. They have just lost one of their friends. Read what they had to say to him.
There's nothing that sets the mood for a funeral more than the Wulong Forest. Its past tells a story of betrayal and its leaves fall like the tears of those who lost their loved ones. The only sound heard at the time was the frequent crunch of the tree's tears and slight sobs.
Everyone had lost someone more than a friend... He was a mentor, someone to look up to. Iroh's time had passed at the age of 99. All of his childhood friends had already left the world and he was the last to go. Just like everything else, a new generation was arriving as the old one was just leaving.
Aang, now in his forties, walked to the podium. His stature was a lot gloomier and so was his expression. He, too, had lost a friend.
"He once told me that life is like a dark tunnel. You can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving, you will come to a better place. I think that can apply to this funeral. This might seem like a dark time, but we just have to keep moving on and find the light, but that doesn't mean we can forget him. I'll make it my job to make sure the world doesn't forget his generosity and compassion."
Those who came clapped their quiet, brief clap, and went silent again. Katara had now become the speaker.
"It took me awhile to think about what I was going to say because I haven't had the closest relationship with him. Yes there are many things you can say Iroh taught throughout his life, but I think there's one thing that stands out. He taught me personally, that people can change. That's an idea that I still have problems with. He might've lead the raid to Earth Kingdom capital, he might've led the raid to the Northern Water Tribe, but he proved to us that he has changed. He took back Ba Sing Se in the name of the Earth Kingdom, he helped me and my friends escape Azula's wrath, and he even married me and Aang."
After her speech Zuko took the stage.
"My father shunned me all my life, practically." Upon hearing those few words the congregation took a quick glance at the insulted father. "This man, my uncle, was more like my father than anyone else in the world. He was there for me when I was banished and he was there for me when I was trying to find my destiny. Although I made horrible choices, one even imprisoned him; he was still waiting for me with open arms. His wisdom and advice showed me the right path to get me here. I would not have been the Fire Lord I am today if it weren't for him. That's what a dad should be like... He should be just like Iroh."
Before he could go back to his seat, Zuko was already gushing tears and weeping maniacally. No one had ever seen that side of him, besides Iroh.
Toph argued with herself whether or not she should say something. But after a few moments of thinking, it was time for her anecdote.
"What stands out to me about Iroh is his laid-back attitude. If you don't know me, I'm a pretty kickback, fun kind of girl... And so was Iroh. In his spare time, he played the Tsungi horn Pai Sho. His advice was killer and his tea was even better. He always relaxed people in their angriest state, and never judged them. I can keep going on and on about this guy, but I don't think anyone could possibly list all of his attributes. "
A single tear shed from Toph's impaired eye, surprising everyone.
An odd figure went up to tell her story. Only Iroh had known her so she got a few strange looks.
"Iroh reminds me a lot of my father. They were but kind and calm; they both loved rare teas...Especially jasmine." Ming started to tear up slightly and paused shortly. "Life can be a jerk, ya know? He is probably the most qualified to be a father, but at the same time he lost his only son. That's living proof that life is short and we need to make the most of it. We'll never know what it'll give or take."
The last to speak was one of the most hated men on the planet. His sympathy towards Iroh was a shocker.
"After thinking long and hard, and listening to everyone's tales, I know why I was so mean to my one and only sibling. I was jealous... I was jealous. He had people that loved him, and I did too. But the difference was, they loved me because they feared what would happen if they didn't. I used that fear to make people obey me, he used his personality. Ming said life is too short. I don't think she could've emphasized it any more. I never had a chance to tell him that I was sorry, oh so sorry. To any of you that are in a quarrel with friends, don't be. You don't know what might happen to them tomorrow, or even in a few minutes... Life is too short."
Gee, I sure hope I don't die last. Katara thought to herself. I want all of my friends to be at my funeral.
Her polar opposite, Sokka, said to himself that he wanted to outlive everyone. He obviously didn't factor in all of his bad luck.
