|Leaving Home and Going Home|
Leaving Home (Priya)
My name is Priya Rai. I am sixteen years old and I live in the Northern Water Tribe. I am the daughter of the deceased General Gao and Neela Rai. I am betrothed to a rich man named Ching. He owns a giant fortune and I am to marry him because my family is currently going through money troubles. With my father dead, our status may go down and we may end up poor. But, I am moving to Republic City in order to have the wedding. We are taking the luxury passenger liner The Blue Diamond.
Today, we went down to the docks to board the ship. There was a huge crowd at the docks waving goodbye to their relatives and friends. I stared at the colossal steam liner. There were four huge smokestacks, and a giant hull.
"Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this? It's not as big as its sister ship The Avatar Roku," I commented.
"Priya, you can be blasé about some things, but you can't be blasé about The Blue Diamond. Not even the Spirits themselves could sink this ship," Ching told me.
"Come on now Priya," Mother told me. I silently said yes and followed. It was a ship of dreams. Well, at least to everyone else. To me, it was a slaveship, carrying me in chains to Republic City. I hated the feeling of being trapped. I just wanted freedom. I was chained to the rules of society and I couldn't break free.
Going Home (Trinn)
My name is Trinn Kapoor. I am seventeen years old and I am a Northern Water Tribe boy but I actually lived in Republic City until I was ten years old. My day started out like this. I was in a tavern with my friend Makoto. We were playing a game of cards in order to win three tickets for The Blue Diamond.
"I can't believe you bet our tickets," the opponent's friend said. All of a sudden, I won.
"All right! We won! We're going home baby!" I whooped.
"No. The Blue Diamond is going home in five minutes," the bartender said. With packed suitcases, we ran as fast as we could to the docks. Before we got to the ship, we were stopped by an officer.
"Wait, did you get your heads checked for lice?" he asked.
"We don't have any lice. Besides, were Republicans!" I said. He took our tickets and allowed us in. We ran straight up to the main deck and leaned over the railing.
"Goodbye! Goodbye! I'm gonna miss you all!" I shouted.
"You know someone?" Makoto asked.
"No, but that's not the point!" I told him. He then followed my lead and shouted farewell and goodbye along with me. We were going home.
