First appearance

Act 2: Aang

Kuwabara was Yugoda's mother and the Herbalist of Taku before Pathik. She died a year before the attack of the Fire Nation on Taku and the destruction of the Air Temples.

Kuwabara lived in the Northern Water Tribe for about half of her life. She married at age sixteen, as was the custom. She had a happy marriage, although she would rather not have married at all. Both she and Kanna share the same opinions. They believe that they should be free to choose their husbands, although they may want to marry the man they are arranged to anyway. Kuwabara was the Healing Instructor of the Northern Tribe. She had a daughter, Yugoda, who became the Instructor after her. When Yugoda was arranged to marry, Kuwabara left the Tribe for Taku, because she could not stand to see her daughter marry without her choice.

After working as an herbalist in Taku for thirty-two years, she began to train Pathik. She told him often that it was his knowledge of chakras that gave him his natural ability to heal people.

Kuwabara believed that where an injured or ill person feels pain is not necessarily where pain is coming from. She sometimes compared pain to one of those itches you can't quite seem to find, so you can't scratch it. She was a master at healing with both herbs and waterbending, and at one point, she wrote an instructional book for herbalists to come. This book wasn't used until Shaocia became the only one living in the greenhouse.

The cause of her death is unknown, but she presumably died of natural causes.

Non-canon Appearances

Kuwabara appears in the non-canon crossover, Clash of Worlds 3}}.

  • Her line "Oh, I've been around a while. You pick things up." is the same as Piandao's in "Sokka's Master". This further indicates Kuwabara is a member of the Order of the White Lotus, as both she and Piandao probably actually got their information from fellow order members. In Kuwabara's case, this was probably Gyatso.
  • Kuwabara (桑原) is a word used to ward off lightning in Japanese.

  • In Pathik's Story, Pathik states that Kuwabara died in 1 BG. However, she later appears in Kanna's Story, in 34 AG. The explanation of what appears to be an inconsistency has not yet been released.
