Chapter Sixty-Eight: Hero Edit
Up where the mountains meet the heavens above . . .
“Keep working, Katara. That isn’t going to cook itself,” Sokka says, and she glares at him.
“How about you try to cook dinner, Sokka?” she snaps, and her brother shrugs and tosses another strip of tiger seal blubber into his mouth.
Sokka swiftly spits it out. “Ugh! It isn’t even . . . bleh . . .”
She shakes her head. “You . . . and Gran-Gran . . . and the rest of the village . . . I can’t believe all of you! You’re all insane! You just let him leave?”
“Well, it wasn’t exactly my choice, Katara,” her brother explains impatiently. “He’s a Fire Nation spy. He had to go. Booted out. Survival of the fittest. Now, how’s dinner coming?”
Out where the lightning splits the sea . . .
She turns around so quickly the air fans the flames and causes them to roar, almost the calm before her storm. “Aang wasn’t a spy! He was an Airbender. Since when does the Fire Nation employ Airbender spies?! I know why. You’re just jealous that he’s a better human being than you’ll ever be!”
Sokka snorts. “Yeah, okay, whatever. He was a foreigner, and he deserved to leave.” Her brother leans forward. “Come on, Katara. Hurry up.” Sokka claps, and she grates her teeth.
I would swear that there's someone somewhere watching me . . .
“No. Do you know what you will never understand? Someday, the Fire Nation is going to come back, and then you’ll wish you’d never sent him away.” Her blood boils. “You should have seen him. Aang could fly. And he was a powerful bender! And I could’ve been a Waterbender! You know what? You’re jealous that you’re not a bender. That’s why. Because Aang could actually understand me! Because we’re both benders, and you couldn’t take that!” The water nearby begins to bubble and steam. “Because you have to be the alpha male! You have to dominate! Well, Aang is twice the man you’ll ever be!”
Through the wind and the chill and the rain . . .
Sokka rolls his eyes. “Yeah, sure. Just because you liked him doesn’t mean you can sit here and harp about it. Honestly, Katara, I don’t know what you see in him.” Her brother laughs. “Yeah. I booted your boyfriend.”
Her eyes narrow. “He’s not my boyfriend, Sokka. Ugh. Why don’t you grow up? He’s a friend, and—”
Suddenly, something lurches, and the pot of boiling water spills over the floor. The floor quakes.
She and Sokka exchange glances.
And the storm and the flood . . .
Miserable, he watches the ocean. “Yeah, I liked her too.”
The Fire Nation ship slices through the choppy waters.
His eyes widen.
“The village! Appa, wait here!”
I can feel his approach like the fire in my blood . . .
Hey, it's another one of my song chapters!
And yes, that is that song.
And yes, it's a combination of fanon and canon. [gasp] How dare I?!
The boyfriend line again. =]
