Sokka stepped off the boat, and the dock creaked beneath his feet. He inhaled deeply, allowing the smell of Kyoshi Island and that of the ocean to wash over him simultaneously. In his arm, held a box tightly against his chest, and his right hand brushed against the pouch on his belt.
He grinned. This was going to be fun; he couldn't wait to see her face.
"Hey, Sokka!" Ty Lee's voice echoed across the dock. "Long time, no see!"
"What's up, Ty Lee? He asked as he approached. "Why are you waiting around by the docks?"
She grinned. "I dunno. I just like taking in the sea breeze sometimes!"
"Awesome. Hey, is Suki—?"
The acrobat giggled. "She's in the dojo with Jin and Sho!"
He smiled. "That was a good rhyme. Mind if I steal it?"
"Not at all," Ty Lee replied before taking off toward the dojo. "C'mon, I want to see the look on Suki's face!"
"Uh..." He glanced at the box he was holding. "Wait up...?"
By the time he reached the dojo, Suki was already out the door. Her grin was infectious, and Sokka's own smile widened.
"Hey, Suki! Long time, no—"
"See? You're right. It hasn't been easy on me. I mean, I haven't been able to win a sparring match easily since the last time you were here!" She softened the remark with a wink.
"Hey now, I am a serious martial arts master," Sokka replied. "And hey, it looks like we're at the dojo," he said before pointing at the two Kyoshi Warriors behind Suki, "with Jin and Sho!"
Suki just blinked as Sho slapped her own forehead with the heel of her hand. "Where on earth did you come up with that one? It was awful."
"No worse than usual, really," Jin said wryly.
Sokka deflated. "I thought it was funny...I guess you just don't appreciate my sense of humor!" he huffed.
Suki chuckled. "I appreciate it fine; it's you rhyming skills that need work!"
"Oh, yeah? Then how about you and I have a haiku-off?"
She raised an eyebrow. "A what now?"
He set the box on the floor and stood up straight. "We're gonna see who is the better poet! Let's do it!"
"I'll start!" he said.
"My name is Sokka
I am the best boyfriend
You all are jealous."
Suki rolled her eyes. "Sure you are. Alright, let me see if I can do this."
"The Platypus Bear
A dangerous animal
Don't confront the beast."
Sokka smiled. "That was pretty good; I'll give you that. But, uh, why didn't you continue the theme?"
"Theme?" she asked.
"Yeah, about how great of a boyfriend I am." He winked, and Suki sighed.
"Didn't you catch my platypus bear haiku?" She smirked. "Don't mess with the beast."
"Okay, okay, point taken." His fingers brushed against the pouch on his belt, and he swallowed. "My turn, then." He pulled the pouch open and removed a small box, getting down on one knee as he did so. He heard the three Kyoshi Warriors behind him gasp.
I might be crazy
To ask this important question
Will you marry me?
Suki's eyes widened, and she took a tentative step toward him. "...your second line had eight syllables, you goof..." With that, she wrapped her arms around him. "Yes, Sokka, I will absolutely marry you!"
He grinned and returned her embrace. "I love you, Suki."
"I love you, too," she replied. Her eyes eventually wandered over to the box on the floor. "Uh, Sokka?"
He pulled away, but kept a light grasp on her shoulders. "Yeah?"
"What's in the box?"
"Oh, yeah!" He grabbed the box and opened the top, pulling out a small glass vase with several black and white flowers in some water. The flowers drooped, and Sokka coughed. "Well, they were supposed to last the trip. They're—"
"Panda lilies..." Suki said. "A symbol of love." She chuckled. "Okay, you might have earned that 'great boyfriend' title."
Sokka smiled. "Nope, now I'm a great fiancé!"
Suki nodded. "Yeah, I think you are, too."
