Avatar: The Last Airbender

Intro

Little do we think of how fortuitous the circumstances were during the times of Avatar Aang. Not often do we realize things could have turned out very differently had only one factor been removed... and such things allow for endless possibilities to unveil themselves. Because... what would have happened if Katara hadn't tagged along on that fishing trip with her brother Sokka? What if she had decided to stay behind to help her grandmother with her chores?

The changes on the already written story could be unimaginable... the world as we know it wouldn't exist. To picture such developments may be unthinkable... but who is to say it wasn't likely? Who is to declare it was impossible? Certainly, the story as we know it wouldn't have been written... but maybe another story would have been born instead.

A story where the struggle to save the world is not in the manner we envisioned, where a different war wages in the form of fighters who strive to prove their worth through their bending or their weapons, where the least expected love story unfolds, changing the way a Princess sees the world, changing the way a young man makes a name for himself when he takes upon the challenge of becoming...GLADIATOR

Characters

Sokka // The Blue Wolf

The best Warrior of the Southern Water Tribe, Sokka loathed the Fire Nation almost inherently. At his twenty-one years of age he sought to bring down a Fire Nation settlement in the South Pole by leading his comrades into battle, but what seemed to be an easy win for the Water Tribe turned into a struggle to survive when Sokka found himself facing an unexpected foe, who captured him and shipped him off to become a slave for the Fire Nation. He was forced to become an amateur gladiator, and upon every new day he had to fight for his right to live...

Two years later, after a twist of fate he was thankful for (regardless he won't admit it easily), Sokka has become a Professional Gladiator, and he'll slowly work his way up in the ranking with the help of his sponsor and worst enemy: Princess Azula.

Princess Azula

Cunning, ambitious and powerful, the daughter of Fire Lord Ozai knows no boundaries once her heart has been set on a goal. She has a lot to learn, since she knows very little of the ways of the world. Now she's standing up for herself and seeking to fight against the sexist regime that the world is being ruled by since immemorial times, and to achieve said goal, she requires the help of the least likely man: Sokka, the very warrior whose great deed she thwarted in the South Pole. It won't be easy for the Princess to convince him to work for her, but once she does, the two of them will be unstoppable.

Xin Long

During an accidental expedition that led Princess Azula and her gladiator into the forests north of the Earth Kingdom, they happened upon a cave that had been fostering a majestic creature for many years: a black, wingless dragon. After bonding with the Princess, the dragon became her faithful companion and he answers to the name Xin Long, which means "New Dragon". He happens to become quite a mischievous dragon, who rather enjoys watching other people's misfortune, and enjoys inflicting it upon them even more so. His loyalty to his rider is unquestionable.

Prince Zuko

Banished by his father, Fire Lord Ozai, when he was only 13 years old, Zuko returns to the Fire Nation after ten years to discover everything has changed even though all seems to be the same. His arrival holds a particular meaning for his sister, who fears that all she has fought for during these years will be lost if he regains his position as their father's heir. But Ozai refuses to see his son, to acknowledge his presence, even... and Zuko will begin to question if he truly belongs in the world he can hardly recognize anymore after ten years of being away from it...

Toph Beifong // The Blind Bandit

Daughter of high ranking noblemen of the now inexistent Earth Kingdom, Toph is anything but the frail little girl her parents believed her to be. After striking a bargain with Xin Fu, Toph begins to live the life she had always wished for. Her bending prowess is beyond anything that has been seen in Gladiator pits before, and she has a knack for defeating her opponents thoroughly with ease, hardly ever sustaining any injuries while at it. She barely ever loses a match and eventually forms a camaraderie with Sokka, although they share a very bitter rivalry as well.

Suki // Kyoshi's Heir

Beautiful and powerful, Kyoshi's Heir is one of the top female gladiators and also one of the best non-benders in the business. She used to live in Kyoshi Island before a Fire Nation raid took over the region. Now, sponsored by Oyaji, she makes her way up through the ranking, but there's something mysterious about this particular gladiator who fights with fans...

Mai

One of Azula's closest friends, Mai seems a gloomy, dark presence on first glance, but her eyes are ever watching, always analyzing everything that happens around her. She identifies immediately the unusual relationship that was brewed between Azula and her gladiator, but she remains quiet as she watches how it unfolds from the sidelines. Wife to Ruon Jian and mother to Yuudai, she was also Zuko's first love. She prompted him to move on when they met again, and they remained friends.

Ty Lee

Azula's cheerful and happy-go-lucky friend, a clear counterweight to both Mai and Azula's personalities. She's a very able and skilled fighter, although she doesn't have the same observation skills Mai holds with pride. Ty Lee is always looking at everything from the bright side, sighing after handsome boys and feeling a certain pull that begs her to take after Azula's example and hire a gladiator of her own...

Haru

Ty Lee's personal gladiator, a young and serious earthbender who follows his sponsor's every order and hopes not to disappoint her. He is powerful, yet slightly reckless during battle, for he often fails at containing his strength. Haru becomes a good friend of Sokka's, and he happens to enjoy a relationship with his sponsor that happens to break the boundaries of professionalism...

Song

A young girl who used to make a living in the Earth Kingdom as a healer, she was captured and turned into a slave. She becomes Sokka's cook and personal healer, and she's become almost a sister to him. She is kind and thoughtful, and she has seen the true nature of the relationship between Sokka and his sponsor...

Rui Shi

The Captain of Azula's Royal Guards, a stern man who is loyal to the Princess first and foremost. He often complains about Azula making his job far more difficult than it should be, which is something the Princess seems to take pride on. He doesn't quite know what to make of Sokka, for he holds both respect and dislike towards him on equal amounts.

General Iroh // The Dragon of the West

Azula and Zuko's Uncle, the firstborn son of the now deceased Fire Lord Azulon. He is an older man who carries heavy burdens on his shoulders, and who shares his wisdom with those who need it. Even so, Iroh isn't as tame and inoffensive as he may seem at first sight. His actions and affiliations aren't erratic, for he is a man on a self-imposed mission, and he will do everything in his power to reach his own ends, including joining the Gladiator League as The Blind Bandit's sponsor...

Katara

Sokka's younger sister, she believes her sibling has died at the hands of the Fire Nation. To honor him she has taken upon the duty of defending their home by leading the Water Tribe resistance, and she has developed her own waterbending style to fight on par with firebenders if the need was to arise. But, on a fateful day of practicing her arts, a new ally was to appear before her unexpectedly, turning her hopes into reality.

Avatar Aang

The nineteen-year old Avatar had been about to master waterbending when he heard word of the Fire Nation's attack on the Air Nomads. He took his Sky Bison and attempted to fly all the way to the Southern Air Temple, but a storm struck them down and he was forced to freeze both of them, in hopes to remain safe within the ice until the storm had passed. Never had he expected to remain frozen for over a hundred years, though.

Now, as a guest member of the Water Tribe, Aang teaches Katara the waterbending techniques he's mastered. He remains hidden within the village, his identity as the last airbender covered by the hair he had to grow out to hide his arrows. He knows the weight of the world rests on his shoulders, and he wishes to right the wrong he did to the world by freezing up for such a long time...

Admiral Zhao

Azula's formerly most admired figure, a sexist and ambitious man in a constant pursuit for power. He has already climbed to the highest position he can attain in the Fire Nation Navy, he sponsors the top gladiator of the Superior Gladiator League and he is one of Fire Lord Ozai's most trusted advisors. He was personally leading the campaign against the Northern Water Tribe until recently when the Fire Lord summoned him back to the Capital. He is currently traveling on his way as we speak.

Piandao

A former officer of the Fire Nation military and current member of the White Lotus Piandao is the greatest swordsman in the Fire Nation. He trained Prince Zuko in his youth and Sokka recently. He recently disappeared when a mysterious letter arrived at his estate in Shu Jing

Shoji

Helpful front desk clerk who works at the Royal Dome.

The Superior League

Information

The Superior League is an organization that is comprised of no more than 500 gladiators. In this organization. Gladiators are ranked by the number of points a gladiator holds rather than on the win-loss ratio. A Gladiator may have won a hundred combats, but if his opponents have a low Value, or if he destroys the furniture within the Arena, his total points can be lower than what a Gladiator who has won thirty times against foes with a higher Value.

The Gladiator Value is a property of each fighter that depends on his position in the ranking. The Gladiator in the top position of the ranking has a Value of 500 points, the second one has a value of 499 and so on until the last gladiator in the ranking, who holds a worth of 1 point. The Value of each gladiator is his worth in battle: when a gladiator beats another, his earned points will be the Value of his opponent. Fights are determined when gladiators sponsors challenge each other to fights and register the time with the Superior League.

A gladiator is declared the winner when one of the following takes place:

1. A gladiator kills their opponent.

2. A gladiator knocks out their opponent.

3. A judge determines who fought better.

All fights have a time limit that is set each fight by the sponsors and cannot exceed one hour. For each object a Gladiator destroys within the Arena he will be discounted 20 points off his total score. Additionally all fights have bids that both sponsor agree on before the fight. The winner of the fight gets both bids and the bid must be a least 1 Yuan, but there is no high cap on bids. The sponsor of the Gladiator in first place gets a weekly bonus from the Superior League. Gladiators who don't participate in any fights for three months or who have a loss streak of twenty fights will be out of the system. On average 10 gladiators leave the system a month. Non bending gladiators are limited to 5 weapons. A sponsor can assign another person to be a temporary sponsor. All it takes is a letter of consent.

Arenas

Royal Dome: Located in the Fire Nation Capital. The Royal Dome is the grandest of all the arenas in the Superior League. The fighting area is a sand pit with a well, metal spikes around the perimeter of the arena and a system of ropes and ladders.

Ember Crater: Located on Ember Island. This arena is red and shaped like an erupting volcano. Its fighting area is a sand pit.

Golden Eye: Located in Yu Dao. The arena gets its name from the shape of its sand pit.

Gladiator Rumble: Located in Gaoling. Previously The Earth Rumble, but its name was changed when the Fire Nation took Gaoling.

Ozai Arena: Located in Omashu. It was the only part of King Bumi's palace that wasn't demolished

Green Gates: Located in Ba Sing Se. The Pairs Tournament takes place here.

Jade Range: Located in Garsai. The fighting area is covered with grass unlike most arenas.

Ring of Ash: Located in Fire Fountain City. The arena is literally covered in ash. The Scavenger Hunt begins and ends here.

Special Events

Scavenger Hunt: Takes place in Fire Fountain City. Gladiators start in the Ring of Ash and then search the city for 10 relics all while fighting each other over them. Each relic is worth 200 points. Gladiators are supposed to collect as many as they can then bring them back to the Ring of Ash where they are safe. Once you re-enter the Ring of Ash you are done with the competition.

Pairs Tournament: Takes place in Ba Sing Se. The tournament takes place during a period of four days in which there are no other fights. During the tournament 2 teams of two fight off to risk gaining or losing a lot of points. If a team wins they both get their opponents team's point value, but if they lose they lose their opponent's team point value. Each fight is set to twenty minutes and each sponsor has to pay an entrance fee of 10,000 yuans. To win a fight both opponents must be knocked out or killed and if you knock out your ally your team will be disqualified.

Chapter 3

Two years have past Sokka was sold as a gladiator for the Amateur League and is now in Hui Yi. Azula learns of an arranged marriage between her and Admiral Chan's son (who is also named Chan). The Admiral took all the glory when Azula stopped the Water Tribe raid an is using the favor he earned from Fire Lord Ozai to marry his son to Azula. Azula needs to prove to her father that Chan (the son) would weaken the family so she plans to sponsor a gladiator to shame Chan and stop the marriage.

Trivia: Even though Zuko wasn't there most of the events of The Beach happened and impacted the story greatly.

Chapter 7

Azula and Sokka travel to Shu Jing to visit the swordsmaster Piandao. After talking with Sokka Piandao agrees to train him then Azula departs for the Capital.

Chapter 8

On the way to Ember Island Azula and Sokka spar on the barge's deck and Azula reveals the intentions of Sokka's first fight to him she then proceeds to tell him that she almost became an apprentice of Piandao's until her mother intervened, showing the bitterness of her relationship she had with her mother. Both of them depart each other's company, Sokka going to dinner and Azula pondering the trust she's placing in him and the consequences of him failing.

Chapter 10

Sokka is awoken by a guard for breakfast. He then proceeds to the armory to discover the armor Azula commissioned for him. The ship arrives at Ember Island and Azula and Sokka depart. They do a little sight seeing before heading to the Arena. They arrive before their fight so they end up waiting. While waiting Azula tells Sokka what happened between her and Chan. They both head to the stand by room and Azula heads up to the sponsor's gallery once she's sure Chan is there. She proceeds to the balcony and Chan begins monologuing until he relieves this is the girl who burnt his house down.

That conversation ends terribly and they avoid each other when the get back to the ship. Azula drops Sokka off with Piandao saying she'll be back in a month with a new fight.

Trivia: Azula mentions energybending, woodbending, and soundbending. Energybending is canon, woodbending can be considered a sub art of waterbending considering what the waterbenders of the Foggy Swamp Tribe can do, and soundbending...I was kinda hoping that was gonna be the sub art of airbending that was teased for Book 3 of The Legend of Korra.

The gates then open and Sokka begins walking to the fighting area.

Chapter 15

Sokka fights the Red Striped-Hornet (Smellerbee) and has the upper hand until he finds out his opponent is a woman then he stops fighting her. He spends the rest of the match trying to avoid her. The match is decided by judge's verdict and Sokka wins. Azula is infuriated by this and she chews him out then storms off to the Palace. She instructs the Captain of he Royal Guards to take Sokka to Piandao's. Ty Lee passes on Sokka's message of forgiveness to Azula.

Chapter 21

Sokka recovers from his injuries for the most part and meets Zuko. Zuko is dismayed that Azula has found a new ally to taunt him. A stranger appears at Sokka's table at the tavern and takes a seat across from him. She introduces herself as June, a bounty hunter and asks him what his girl problems are about. Sokka reluctantly gives a heavily edited version of his problems. June assesses that he needs to figure out if he's in love with Azula and the only way to do that is sleep with another woman. She offers herself to Sokka which surprises him.
