Where we last left off
Xue stood on the balcony once again; the day has come and gone so quickly, she thought, as she watched the sun set in the west, staring blankly into the golden yellow skylight. This was her favorite place in the world. She was glad that Lu Ten had swallowed his arrogance, Tenzin his pride and Lin her rebelliousness and agreed to apologize to Kenji the next morning, although not without some conditions. She sighed as she looked back towards the sunset, and rested her elbow on the railings. I wonder what Kenji could be doing now.
Deep within the heart of the forest, Kenji took his fighting stance, his dual dao swords in hand. His opponent had not yet revealed herself.
"Show yourself!" he yelled, catching a glimpse of movement in the shadows. Slowly, a beautiful girl revealed herself. She wore a very short miniskirt, with fishnet leggings below a fishnet tube-top. She had long black hair which flowed down with a perfectly flawless skin and face.
"Hello," she said seductively. "Aren't you a eyeful?" Kenji raised an eyebrow and laughed almost maniacally.
"If you think you can seduce me, you've got another thing coming!" he replied. "Who are you and who do you think you are? I am not a fool to fall for someone who almost beheaded me. Now, who sent you?" She was shocked as his attitude became more serious.
"Impressive, you are the first one I've been sent to kill that isn't foolish, but either way..." She quickly tossed her bladed chain at Kenji; the firebender raised his left sword and deflected her attack, as she reeled the chain back in. I might need to use my firebending at times like this, I can't get close enough to attack with my swords or chi blocking, he thought. His thoughts were interrupted by the metal chain which wrapped around his swords; she tried dragging them but lacked the upper body strength.
"Nice try," he said. He pulled his swords backwards and his opponent was dragged along flying straight towards him; his foot connected with her jaw and she was sent flying back. However, she managed to rip the swords out of his hands. Her back connected abruptly with a tree and she fell to the ground.
"You're really pathetic you know? If you can't bend, don't think of becoming an assassin," Kenji said. She got up warily, wiping the blood from her mouth and ignoring the pain in her back. She swung her chain and tossed it one last time in hopes of ending him. Kenji smirked. He released a fistful of thick black smoke which completely blocked her view. The smoke cleared, only for her to see Kenji running at her full speed. He leaped into the air and yelled down at her.
"Say your final prayers!" He ended with a butterfly kick which released a massive fire tornado from both legs. So this is how it ends, she thought. She closed her eyes and shielded her face. She felt the heat of flames, but not the flames itself. She opened her eyes slowly, not knowing what had happened. Kenji stood in front of her with swords in both hands; she noticed that he had deliberately missed and decimated the landscape of trees behind her.
"I-I'm a-alive?" she stammered.
"No of course not, you're dead and so am I. This is the spirit realm," he replied with a tone of sarcasm.
"Why didn't you kill me? I tried to kill you!" she ranted, clearly confused.
"Judging you, I'd say you were around sixteen years old. You have a long life ahead of you and if you don't quit being an assassin you'll end up facing someone who's not as merciful as me. My name is Kenji, what's yours?" he sheathed his swords and stretched his hand out with a smile.
"How can you be kind to a person who attacked you for no reason?" she asked with a doubtful look on her face.
"Believe me, after all that has happened today, I have no choice." She stared at him suspiciously before taking his hand.
"My name is Mei," she replied.
"See how easy was that. Now..." Before Mei could blink he had pinned her to a tree and his dual dao swords were placed against her neck. Mei was more shocked at how quick he had brought out his swords than the fact that he had changed his attitude towards her.
"Don't take my hospitality for gullibility, otherwise you will sincerely regret it." His voice was cold and fierce and she felt cold vibes run down her spine. He ran his hand down her spine slowly as though searching for something.
"What are you doing you pervert!" she yelled. He ignored her and reached into her back pocket, removing a poison knife slowly. He smirked almost insanely, terrifying her even more. "How did you... I wasn't going to use that!" He laughed at her like a psychotic murderer, and Mei did her best to hide her fear.
"Once an assassin, always an assassin. Perhaps I should kill you here and now to save me the trouble of running into you in the future." Bright red flames burned in his palm.
"Don't kill me, please." The fear was evident in her voice as she pleaded for her life.
"And why shouldn't I?" he asked, the flames slowly reducing.
"Because I never wanted to be an assassin! My parents were killed when I was little and I had no where to go. I stole to survive and slept on the streets, when I was given the offer to become an assassin. I had no choice, it was kill or be killed. You don't know how tormenting it is to work for the same person that murdered your family in cold blood." Tears slowly dropped from her eyes and Kenji extinguished the flames.
"I see. Are you a waterbender?" he asked suddenly. His question seemed to surprise her.
"No I'm not" she replied whilst wiping the tears from her eyes. Of course not, Juan has brown hair and sapphire eyes, it was foolish to mistake her for my sister, Kenji thought. He sheathed his swords once more and released her as he turned away.
"I won't kill you, just be sure to find your own path. You can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but you know it is there. Just follow the right path, the path you make for yourself, to find your destiny. My old master always told me this," he said remorsefully.
"I'm dead either way," she replied. She was still firm and pessimistic.
"What?" Kenji was puzzled.
"My master Doshe has been watching us this whole time. By failing to kill you, he'll kill me."
"First of all, who sent you to kill me?"
"I don't know, only he knows."
"Wait, didn't you just say he was watching us?!" Kenji was about to unsheathe his swords when he received two rocks to the gut and an earth column which struck his jaw knocking him down. Suddenly, a man with a brown beard wearing a green garment dropped down from a tree.
"My, my, I'm greatly disappointed in you Mei, but I'll give you a chance to redeem yourself." He gestured to the poison knife on the ground.
"Pick that up, and kill the boy, then all is forgiven." Mei glanced at the knife and warily picked it up. She walked towards Kenji and stood over him, preparing to stab him. Just find your own path. You can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but you know it is there. Just follow the right path, the path you make for yourself, to find your destiny. The words Kenji had told her echoed in her mind and she hesitated.
"Well? What are you waiting for? Finish him!"
"NO!" she snapped at him. "I don't want this type of life anymore. I don't want to kill anyone anymore, but I'll happily end your life!"
She threw the knife at him, which he easily deflected with an earth shield. She picked up her chain and whirled it around her head; she tossed it at him but turned his earth shield into rock gloves and caught the chain by the blade.
"Remember, I taught you how to use this. I knew you'd turn on me sooner or later but I didn't think it would be this soon. Oh well, say hello to your parents in the afterlife." He stomped both feet hard on the ground and removed a chunk of earth as large as a full grown badgermole and tossed it at her. She was defenseless and there was no way to dodge the earth. She readied herself for the pain that was to come, but before she knew what had happened, a dust cloud filled the area. Slowly but surely, the dust cloud cleared revealing Kenji standing warily with his dual swords and the giant chunk of earth split in two.
"Don't try that again if you want to live!" Kenji yelled. He was still shook up from the blows but managed to stand still. Doshe laughed loudly.
"If you had it in you to kill, you would have murdered myself and my bosses the day we raided your house."
"What?!" Kenji's eyes widened.
"I was there on the day we killed your parents; I watched as an icicle was put through your mother's chest and your father was burned alive by the leaders. You had the power to save them but you were weak and feeble minded."
Kenji stood with his head low; he dropped his swords to the ground and fell to his knees. Doshe smirked; his plan was working perfectly. Or so he thought.
"You will pay..." Kenji's voice was almost dead silent. "All of you will pay!" He rose up and yelled as a ring of fire surrounded him, the flames turning blue, then purple, then green. He sent a double fisted green fire blast at his opponent, as powerful as though it were comet enhanced. The stream of fire effortlessly tore through his opponent's earth shield like tissue-paper and sent Doshe flying back, coming to an abrupt stop against a large tree. Kenji rushed at him and held him up by his neck, choking him.
"Why did you kill my parents?" he asked. His voice was as serious as ever, and there was fire in his eyes.
"I-I d-didn't k-kill them -gasp- my bosses d-did." He was squirming as Kenji's grip hardened.
"Who are you're bosses?!" he yelled, before slowly releasing his grip.
"T-they a-are..." Doshe never managed to finish. An arrow flew from the sky and went straight through his head. He was dead. Kenji looked around for the archer, but whoever it was had fled. He tossed Doshe aside as the flames around him extinguished. He turned around and picked up his dual dao swords, sheathing them as Mei stared awestruck with fear and surprise. Sai, who had been absent the whole battle, returned to Kenji's right shoulder. The darkness slowly faded away as the bright layers of light rose up. They had battled through the night and the landscape was devastated. He yawned slightly as he began walking out of the forest, and turned towards Mei.
"You look hungry. Let me buy you some breakfast," he said.
It had been almost four hours since daybreak, and Kenji had paid for food for the both of them, and a ferry out of the city. Mei was stood at the docks facing the ocean, and after a change of clothes into something more moderate, she looked even more beautiful than before. Finally her old life was behind her, and she was going to return to the Earth Kingdom and find her uncle.
"Call to the Earth Kingdom!" a boat captain yelled. Mei got ready to leave, but not without some parting words to Kenji.
"I can't thank you enough. You gave me some food, money, clothes and even paid for the boat trip, even though I tried to kill you and have done nothing to deserve your kindness."
"It was nothing. I just hope you will find your own destiny and your relatives. So good luck," he grinned.
"Last call to the Earth Kingdom!" She ran down the harbor, but turned around and took one last glance at Kenji. She ran towards him and their lips touched as she kissed him passionately, before turning around quickly to return to the boat. She did not want Kenji to see how red her face was. The boat turned away from the harbor and began it's voyage with Mei waving goodbye.
"You made a new friend today I see," an anonymous voice spoke.
"Who said that?" Kenji turned around, but realised that no one else was there but him and Sai.
"I must be hallucinating from lack of sleep, but that seemed almost real." He stared at his pet. "I'm losing it aren't I?" he sighed, and turned towards the park. Perhaps I might meet Xue, he thought.
So far, this is the longest chapter I have made, and the one I enjoyed writing best. However, I will make longer chapters and perhaps we will find out the owner of the mysterious voice in the next chapter.
Oh and for those that don't get the reference, Kenji's double fisted fire blast is based on the finishing form of the Dancing Dragon.
