Emerald Tears is the sixth chapter of the Darksome Knights: Resurrection and the sixth chapter of "Book 1: After the Battle, Before the War".

Story[]

The cool water brushed past Kiri's pale cheek. Seaweed brushed past her legs as she propelled herself deeper and deeper into the water. Small blue clams lay on the seafloor. Blue creatures with glowing antennae swam lazily past her. As she passed through the gate to Sootopolis City, her ears began ringing .

Just then, something wrapped around Kiri's ankle. She turned around frantically and kicked.

What's happening? Kiri's mind burst into fear as she recalled local legends of strange fish with long tentacles and constantly empty stomachs.

Her lungs started to hurt as she thrashed about, struggling to free herself. Her eyes caught just the faintest gleam of sunlight above her. She swam for the surface. The weight of whatever had wrapped around her ankle was pulling her down. She pumped her legs and arms harder, desperately trying to reach air. Now, her lungs were screaming for air, threatening to explode.

She broke the surface. Gasping for breath, she swam to the western shore of the city and pulled herself up onto dry land. She lay on her back, staring at the thin ray of sunlight that peaked through the volcano's crater high above. She lifted her leg and saw what had been pulling her down.

It was a torn strip of green fabric, like a headband or ribbon. At the end was a heavy metal trapezoid with strange designs on it. The girl looked at it for a while, then put it in her bag. She looked up the rocky steps and started climbing. It was a long way back home, up at the top of the volcano.

The Top of the Volcano[]

"Mom!" Kiri said as she walked into the small white house. "I'm home!"

"I'm in here, sweetie!" a kind voice called. Kiri walked into her brother's bedroom and pulled out a small bottle.

"How are you, honey?" Kiri's mom said when Kiri handed her the bottle.

"Fine." Kiri sat down next to her sickly brother on the bed and stroked his hair. "How is he?"

"Doing better." Mom said as she spooned handfuls of the green syrup into his mouth.

"Where's Dad?" Kiri asked, looking out the window.

"He's at the Gym." Mom said nonchalantly.

"The life of a Gym Leader." Kiri muttered, shaking her head.

"Now, Kiri," Mom said, hands on her hips, "don't talk about your father that way. It's not easy having to run a Gym."

"I will never try to become a Gym Leader." Kiri said.

"Don't start figuring out your life now." Mom tried to say, but Kiri was already walking into her room. Her round, pale blue, baby seal hopped over to her when she flopped down on her bed.

"Hey, Spheal." Kiri said as she scratched it behind its ears. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the ribbon.

"Looks like I've got a mystery to solve."
