Chapter Edit

Today is the day that my dad will come home. He told me that while he was away I needed to get a job. But, nobody is hiring. I can just imagine the look on his face when he finds out that I failed. I hope he doesn’t punish me too hard; I only just got over my pain from the last beating.

"Misaki,” I yelled, “where are you?”

“I’m downstairs!” she yelled back.

“Can you finish off the cleaning? I need to go out.”

“Ugh… Fine!”

“Thanks!"

Misaki is probably the best out of my siblings. She is 15, a year younger than me and she does what I ask of her. She usually does it because she knows if I don’t do what is asked of me especially before Dad returns I will be punished very badly.

I walked down to the local butcher shop. The owner's son is my friend and I figure that if I explain the situation, he may be able to hook me up with a job.

“What!?” The Butcher said after hearing my story. “Of course I will give you a job!”

“Thank you very much,” I replied. I guess I should have just gone to him first. I don’t expect to be paid very much considering I requested the job off him. He said though that he would give me 5 copper pieces a day. That seems good enough. And he isn’t a bender which makes this job just a whole lot better. A lot of people always ask me, how is bending inhumane? I just usually walk away. But, I think it’s inhumane because humans shouldn’t be manipulating anything but their parts.

"JAMIE, where are you?!”

It was my Father. Sounds like he’s home.

“I’m coming…,” I replied. I walked downstairs to find my dad sitting at the bottom. I didn’t really care why he was there so I just walked around him.

“Where are you going, boy?” he screamed.

“I’m going to get some food,” I grunted.

“But I called you, you don’t just walk straight past!”

I apologized, turned around, and asked, “Yes?”

“Got a job?”

“Yes.”

“Where?"

“At the Butchery shop.”

“How much does it pay?”

“5 copper pieces a day.”

“That’s not enough.”

“How much did you expect it to be?”

“At least ten.”

“Ten? Are you kidding me…?”

“No! I am being serious. How dare you talk to your father that way!”

“I’m beginning to think you shouldn’t be my father at all!”

“Go to your room. Be prepared for your punishment later! Don’t you dare speak to me that way!”

I really didn’t care. I walked up to my room to *think* about things.

Why did I suddenly become so confident? I should have never said that. Wait… What am I saying? I stood up to my father! Something nobody else could ever do! Not even my mother.

I could hear the sound of my father’s feet walking to my door. A huge knot formed in my stomach, exactly the same as every other time I heard this noise.

“Jamie!” I heard from a distance... I thought it would be my father but it sounded a lot like Misaki.

“Jamie, I heard what happened. Dad is really mad! Are you going to be okay?” said Misaki although I could barely hear a word she was saying.

“Wow Misaki, calm down no need to speak so fast!” I replied

“Yes there is! Jamie, you’ve really made him mad this time. He is really serious!”

“He’s always serious when it comes to punishing me.”

“Jamie! You don’t seem to care at all! His face is pure red! You’ve released the devil inside of him…”

“Look Misaki, what do you expect me to do? It’s not like I can’t defend myself with anything!”

“What you need to do is get out that door right now before permanent damage is made to you!”

“What’s that going to do? When I come home he’s just going to get even madder and beat me until I bleed!"

“Who said you were going to come back?”

“What are you saying?”

“Leave. You’d have a happier life on the street.”

“I’m not leaving… As much as I hate this family I would never asked to be disowned.”

“Well, well, well… Seems like Little Jamie has feelings!”

“Did you just think I was heartless?”

“Uhh…”

“Oh forget it Misaki… You’re no help! Just leave me alone.” And with that she walked off. I’m pretty sure I could hear her sobbing in the distance. Did I hurt her that much?

“JAMIE! Get your sorry behind down here right now!”

It was my father. For some reason, I had regrets about saying that to him. But it was too late now. I was prepared for my punishment.

Bring.

It.

On!

I walked downstairs into a room where only a candle flickered. I could tell by the expression on my dad’s face that this was going to be like no other. He blew the candle out then I heard running. I wasn’t sure if it was him or not but, I don’t think it was because at that moment I could hear his breathing… He must have been very close to me then, when I thought he’d punch me someone ran to me and held me tight as I slid to the wall.

My mother ran in followed by all my other siblings and she turned on the light. It was Misaki who saved me despite that I told her to leave me alone.

My father looked up he saw all of my siblings standing there waiting to see what he was about to do. But he just left the house with nothing.
