The Friends You Haven't Met
It was early morning in Ba Sing Se. Mir went out of his house, entering the street. He noticed that no one but guards were outside. Two guards were guarding Mir's house. "Hey, you! Go back home. There's a curfew going on in the city! You should've known!" one of the guards said.
"What? What do you mean, 'curfew'? Why?"
"That's none of your business. All you need to know is that it's not safe to hang out outside your house right now, so get inside!" the guard said.
"Okay, calm down," Mir said and went back inside.
Meanwhile, in Lady Li-Hua's lair, she had managed to kidnap another Earth Guardian, Bolin. He was sitting next to Guardian Su, and Lady Li-Hua arrived in the room with a plate of cupcakes. "Honestly, I can't tell you how happy I am you stopped by. Would you like some cupcakes?" she said to the newcomer.
Guardian Su, who somehow had started to feel at home in the prison, drinking tea and eating cupcakes said, "These cupcakes are really very good." The other guardian looked weird at her. "What?" she said and took a new one.
The guardian looked at Li-Hua and said, "Whatever you're planning, the Earth Queen will never let you get away with it."
"Oh, right, the Earth Queen -- my dear, dear sister," Li-Hua said. She told the two guardians that the Earth Queen, her sister, at this point was not sick, but 'really, really weak', because Li-Hua 'unfortunately spilled some of her green smoke into her sister's tea.' The guardians screamed, while Li-Hua laughed her evil laughter.
Elsewhere, Team Avatar arrived in the Full Moon Bay where they were planning to take the ferry to Ba Sing Se. However, the entire bay was empty, except for one person, Raggety, the ticketmaster. He didn't say anything. He was just looking angry at them. "Hi, I'm Miranda, and..." Miranda tried, but then Raggety interrupted.
"I'm sorry, you need to leave. Ba Sing Se is closed," he said.
"Oh! Guys, we're here! Now we can see Guardian Tyro!" Miranda said.
"No one get's to see Guardian Tyro, not with the sickness going around. He's not even here. No one is, so be some smart kids and run home like everyone else!" Raggety said.
"But, Sir!" Willy said, but it didn't help.
"GOODBYE!" Raggety screamed.
Miranda and her friends looked worried at each other. "If we're not going to see Guardian Tyro, what are we going to do?" Myrdin asked. Then they noticed Raggety talking to an earthbender.
"Mike, finally! The Eastern and Western Earth Guardians have been missing, I need you to go to Guardian Tyro and bring him the news -- immediately!" he commanded.
"Eh... eh... Yes, Sir! Right away, Sir!" Mike said and used earthbending to transport himself to Ba Sing Se.
Team Avatar easily followed him and reached Guardian Tyro's house in the Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se. The group was hiding while watching Mike enter Tyro's house, surrounded by guards. They heard Mike telling Tyro the bad news.
"Two other Earth Guardians are missing!" he said.
"Thank you, Mike, you may go now," Tyro said while he opened the door.
As Mike left, Tyro looked outside the house, and he noticed Miranda and her friends. He said, "You! I know you're there! Leave immediately or I'm calling my guards!"
"No!" Miranda screamed and showed up with Ming and the other ones behind her. "I mean... I'm Miranda, and this is my best friend, Dandelion, and my brothers, Willy and Myrdin, and my blue jay, Ming."
"We're sorry if we startled you, but we came all the way from Gaoling, our guardian is missing, our benders can't bend, and the whole town is filled with mysterious green smoke!" Dandelion said.
"Calm down, Dandelion," Miranda said. "We didn't know where else to go," Miranda said.
Tyro chuckled and said, "Okay, okay, I see, I see, that's enough of explaining. You're the Avatar, right?"
"Yes, I am, and this is my new team," Miranda declared. Each of them smiled with there teeth. Miranda was in the middle, while Dandelion was over behind her, Willy and Myrdin was on their each side of her, and Ming was in her hands, twittering. Tyro looked at them a few seconds, smiled the same way, and said, "Come in, everyone, come in, come in!"
They entered Tyro's house, which was as beautiful inside like it was outside. "Please, sit," he said. "You must eat. You had a long journey, and you need an nourishment." A round table was covered with eight tea cups and a teapot. Miranda and her friends each sat while Tyro served them tea. "And of course you must be thirsty," he said. Three seats were obviously empty, but Tyro poured tea in them too. He left the room, but in a minute, he returned with a big cake. "Eat, my friends, eat!" he said. Even Ming was enjoying the cake. Only Miranda didn't eat.
"Ehm... Aren't we waiting for the rest of your company?" she asked Tyro, and looked at the empty cups.
"Oh, no," Tyro said. "Those are set up for my friends -- the friends I haven't met yet."
While they were talking, Ming had fallen asleep at the table. Tyro got up, took her in his arms and said to the teens, "You must be tired top. Come, let me give you guys a place to sleep."
"But, what about Gaoling? Can you help?" Willy asked.
"I think I know... exactly what to do!" he said.
The girls and boys each got a bedroom. When the girls were in bed, Tyro went in to say goodnight. He noticed that Dandelion looked worried. "Everything all right, Dandelion?" he asked.
"I was thinking about my hometown."
"I see... You know, girls, Gaoling isn't the only place with problems. All of the Earth Kingdom is in danger, and I believe it's because of Lady Li-Hua," Tyro said.
"I always thought she was a myth," Miranda said.
"Oh, no, she's real," Tyro declared once and for all. "That's why I'm leaving in the morning," he said. "I need to speak with a firebender named Huang-Gi who lives in the Foggy Swamp. She used to follow Lady Li-Hua and might know how to stop her." Tyro looked at Miranda. "Avatar Miranda? Can I ask you a favor?" he asked.
"Anything, Guardian Tyro," Miranda said.
"I want you to hold something for me," he said while he took off his Earth Amulet, an amulet which each of the Earth Guardians owned.
"Your amulet?" Miranda asked. "I can't take this!" she said.
"It's just for now. My trip to Huang-Gi will be quite dangerous, and I want my amulet to stay safe in the meantime," he said while he put it around Miranda's neck.
"But Guardian Tyro? If it's so dangerous, why are you going? Isn't there another way?" Dandelion asked.
"Not if I want to keep my friends from harm. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to take for them," Tyro said.
While Dandelion was still a little confused, Miranda thought she understood it now. "For the friends you haven't met," she said.
"Yes, and for the ones I have," Tyro said. "Now, get some rest," he said and left the room. "I will see you in the morning before I take my trip --" he said, but the last word the girls didn't hear, "-- perhaps."
The next morning, Ming awoke first and flew out of her bedroom while Miranda and Dandelion were still asleep. She met Tyro, who asked Ming to do him a favor. "Ming, listen to me. It's very important that you find Yakul," he said. "He is a flying bison who lives in the Eastern Air Temple. When you find the Eastern Air Temple, give the nun this scroll," he said and gave Ming a scroll. Ming made sure to complete her little mission.
Tyro was leaving the house, but when he got out of the door, he met Pei Qi, Lady Li-Hua's assistant, who overpowered him easily and kidnapped him, the last Earth Guardian.
