The Flashbacks in the Night
Sokka didn't know why, but not knowing who Amon was bothered him. He laid on his bed remembering the conversation between him, Suki, and Toph.
"THAT'S IT?! NO AMON IN THIS EPISODE?! BUT I NEED TO KNOW WHO HE IS!"
"Calm down, Snoozles. Can't you wait until tomorrow?"
"BUT THAT'S WHAT SUKI SAID YESTERDAY! AND IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!"
"Maybe the next episode is going to be all about him".
"Okay, but this is the last time I'm going to listen to you."
She better be right. Sokka thought while getting up to start the very long day.
"Sokka, what's wrong? You haven't even touched your breakfast," Suki asked.
"Yeah, Snoozles, it's not like you to not eat! You're usually the first one to chug down your food!" Toph stated.
"I just don't feel like eating," Sokka replied solemnly. He was too deep in thought about a certain person that made him not want to eat.
Everyone gasped. "What?" Sokka questioned.
Katara came toward Sokka, laying the back of her hand on Sokka's head, checking his temperature. "Are you sick? ...You don't have a fever." Katara examined him for any signs of illness. "So...are you not feeling well?"
"I'm fine, Katara."
"Are you su-"
"Yeah, I am," Sokka said as he got up from his chair and walked toward the house door.
"I'm going to talk to him," Suki said to the group.
"Okay," Katara said, worried.
Suki opened the door and walked out to see Sokka sitting on the steps. He looked like he was concentrating on something.
"Sokka," Suki called out.
Sokka turned to see Suki standing behind him. Her face looked worried. Sokka sighed and tried to act like himself.
"Yeah, what's up?"
Suki noticed his change in tone and mood. He seemed happier.
"Nothing. So, what are you thinking about?" Suki asked.
"Nothing much. Just about Amon," Sokka replied.
"Don't worry Sokka. You'll find out who he is," Suki said.
Sokka thought about it for a moment and replied, "You're right." He got up and walked toward her, giving her a kiss.
"Aren't I always," Suki said. She was happy to know her boyfriend was alright. "Let's go inside before we miss the show," she added.
Suki opened the door and walked inside. Sokka followed behind her, but he soon realized he wasn't in the beach house. He had walked in on a woman talking in front of a lot of people.
What...? Where am I...?
"Yakone has ruled Republic City's criminal empire for years. Yet, he has always managed to stay out of the law's reach, until now. You will hear testimony from dozens of his victims, and they will tell you Yakone has maintained his grip on the underworld by using an ability that has been illegal for decades. Bloodbending."
Bloodbending? Sokka narrowed his eyes.
"The prosecution's entire case is built upon the make-believe notion that my client is able to bloodbend at will, at any time on any day. I remind the council that bloodbending is an incredibly rare skill and it can only be performed during a full moon. Yet, the witnesses will claim that my client used bloodbending at every other time except during a full moon. It would be a mockery of justice to convict a man of a crime that is impossible to commit."
Sokka looked around the room, turning to see a man with tattoos. Is that Aang? Wow, look at him! He's a hunk! Sokka also noticed Aang's beard. And the beard! Nice, Aang. Real nice. He smiled.
"Councilman Sokka will now deliver the verdict."
All of a sudden, Sokka stood up, but not under his own will. It was like his body was controlling him. Not only that, but out of nowhere, he started to talk.
"In my years, I have encountered people born with rare and unique bending abilities. Why, I once bested a man with my trusty boomerang who was able to firebend with his mind. Why, even metalbending was considered impossible for all of history until our esteemed Chief of Police, Toph Beifong, singlehandedly developed the skill."
Sokka looked at Toph. Wow. Toph looks...beautiful.... He smiled at her. But what in the world am I saying?! Sokka thought. He tried to control his mouth, but it kept on going...
"The overwhelming amount of testimony and evidence has convinced this council that Yakone is one of these unique benders, and he exploited his ability to commit these heinous crimes. We find Yakone guilty of all charges and sentence him to life in prison."
Sokka didn't know what he just said, but his hand grabbed the gavel and pounded it. But, once he did so, he found himself suddenly standing in the beach house again. "Was that a daydream? No...it felt too real to be fake. I was older, so...it must have been a glimpse of the future! Sokka thought.
"Sokka, are you coming?" Suki asked.
He shook his head to get down-to-earth again. "Oh, yeah."
The Gaang all took their regular places on the couch, and of course, Sokka had his usual blubbered seal jerky bowl.
"Okay, guys, it's starting."
Earth. Fire. Air. Water. Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world.
A chance encounter turns Korra from pro-bending spectator to pro-bending star. With her new teammates, Mako and Bolin, the Fire Ferrets earn a place in the championship tournament. But meanwhile, an anti-bending revolution brews in Republic City. Who are the Equalists? And what nefarious plan does the mysterious man behind the mask have in store for our hero?
YES! Sokka thought. It's going to be about Amon!
[The episode opens with a clear side shot of the golden Pro-bending Arena, slowly zooming in. Cut to inside the gym of the arena where a large ball flies through the air; frontal shot of Korra as she catches it.]
"What's the big idea with making me train this early in the morning? The morning is evil."
"We're the rookies, so we get the worst time slot in the gym."
"And you're the rookiest of us all. We gotta get you up to speed if we wanna survive in the tournament. Deal with it."
"You deal with it!"
"One point for Bolin," Suki stated, writing it on a piece of paper, then looking to see an annoyed Katara. Katara growled. Taking notice, Aang asked, "What are you two doing?"
"We're counting the number of reasons why Korra should go with a certain guy."
"Because Sugar Queen is betting on your future love life. That's why!" Toph stated.
"No, I wasn't! I think Korra is better off with Mako, and Suki thinks she should go with Bolin."
"So, Mako just made Korra get annoyed, and that means Bolin gets a point!" Suki said.
"Okay..." Aang said confused.
"And you are...?"
"Butakha. I run this whole pro-bending shebang. Here's your winnings from the last match. Ah ah ah, not so fast. First, you owe me for the Avatar's new gear, gym and equipment rentals from last month, rent on your apartment, and a personal loan for groceries."
"Yeah, just go ahead and take all the money," Zuko said.
"Oh, and one more small item of business: The Fire Ferrets need to ante up thirty thousand yuans for the championship pot."
"Thirty thousand yuans?"
"Sorry, kids. You got 'til the end of the week to come up with the dough, or else, you're out of the tournament."
"You wouldn't happen to have a secret Avatar bank account overflowing with gold, would you?"
"I got nothing. I've never really needed money. I've always had people taking care of me."
"Then I wouldn't say you have nothing."
"Sorry, I didn't mean —"
"No, it's all right. It's just, ever since we lost our parents, we've been on our own."
Katara couldn't help but feel pity for them. "Poor guys."
"I know, it must be hard for them," Aang said.
[Front shot of Bolin.]
"Oh, oh, I got it! I got it! I've been training Pabu to do circus tricks. Now people would pay good money to see that!"
"I know I would!" Sokka stated.
[Wider shot of the three teenagers. Bolin excitedly and hopefully looks to Mako while both Mako and Korra look down on Bolin with a "you cannot be serious" expression.]
"Come on, Bolin. We need serious ideas."
"But that was a serious and brilliant idea!" Sokka said, a little annoyed at Mako.
"I was serious."
"Don't worry about it. I'll figure something out. I always do."
"Hmph...I don't like this guy's attitude."
[Cut to Central City Station. The scene pans down on Fire Lord Zuko's statue to reveal someone sitting at its base while people are passing by.]
"WHAT!? EVEN ZUKO HAS A STATUE?! First Aang, then Toph, and now ZUKO?! Where's my statue?!" Sokka cried out.
"Calm down, Sokka. You complain about every statue in the show." Katara stated.
"Come one, come all. See Pabu, the fantastic fire ferret, as he crosses the Ladder of Peril, upside down! Psst, psst. Big finish, buddy. Stick the landing."
[Pabu flips off and lands on one front paw.]
"Impressive," Sokka said.
"Ta da! Thank you, ladies and gentlemen! You are too kind! Seriously, too kind! You can come back here and put money right in this- Okay, that's fine, that's fine. One yuan down, 29,999 to go."
[Broad side shot as the typical red car used by the Triple Treat Triad pulls up to Bolin. Bolin looks up. Switch to a closer shot of the driver as he rolls down the window.]
"Hey, Bolin. Is that you?"
"Oh, hey there, Shady Shin."
"That guy has 'trouble' written all over his face," Zuko said, looking curiously at Shady Shin.
"No kidding," Aang replied.
"So listen. I got an offer for ya. Lightning Bolt Zolt is lookin' to hire some extra muscle."
"Uh, I don't know, Shin. Mako told to stay away from the Triple Threats."
"Threats? Why would he know someone who causes 'threats'?" Katara questioned.
"Pfuh, your brother ain't the boss of you. It's just a little security work. Nothin' crooked."
"And the way he speaks is...unusual," Suki pointed out.
"Sounds like this guy is a problem," Toph said.
[Cut to a frontal shot of someone generating lightning. Switch to a broader site shot to reveal that there are at least six firebenders standing next to each other generating lightning to shoot at the coil in front of them. Frontal shot of a bender as a whistle goes off. The person takes off his mask and reveals himself as Mako. He sighs and wipes his forehead.]
"Mako can bend lighting? Even I can't do that. Only a few firebenders can do that...but look at all those people who can," Zuko said with slight jealously.
[Cut to a shot of the side of the Pro-bending Arena in the evening. The scene switches to a shot of the arena's attic that serves as Mako and Bolin's home as Mako comes up a stair and enters the room.]
"Wow! Nice apartment!" Sokka said, looking amazed.
"Bo, I'm back! Picked up your favorite dumplings!"
"Speaking about dumplings...I'm hungry," Sokka added.
"Go eat an apple or something," Katara replied.
Sokka grunted, but reluctantly got up. When he came back, he had an apple in his hand.
"Hey, I found some work down at the power plant. Made some decent money. Bolin? You here, bro? Huh, I bet the little lovebird is making a house call."
[Cut to a back-shot of Jinora and Ikki on Air Temple Island, who direct a gust of wind at the airbending gates to make them spin for Korra, who is waiting at the other side. Side shot of Korra as she elegantly weaves her way through the spinning panels, twirling around and avoiding every gate.]
Aang sat there, amazed at the adjustment Korra had made in the past few days. She had gone from getting beaten up to flowing through the gates with ease. He was proud.
"Ooh, he's cute. Korra, is that the handsome firebender boy that drives you crazy?"
[Frontal shot of a still bent-over and panting Korra with Mako approaching behind her. She looks wide-eyed at the girls and then glances back and to see Mako.]
"Does he drive you crazy in a bad way, or does he drive you crazy like you like him?"
[Korra quickly raises the earth underneath the sisters, catapulting them into the air.]
Katara growled. Taking notice, Suki asked, "But I thought you wanted Mako to be with Korra."
"Yeah, doesn't mean she can catapult them in the air like that! They could've gotten hurt!"
"Calm down, Katara. They're airbenders," Aang reminded her.
"I know, but still."
"Ahem. Oh. Hey, Mako."
"You seen Bolin?"
"Nice to see you, too. And no. I haven't seen him since practice. Think something's wrong?"
"I don't know. Bolin has a knack for getting into stupid situations. See you later."
"Wait. I could, uh... help you look for him."
"Nah. I got it."
"Hey, cool guy, let me help you. We can take Naga."
"Simple...an animal," Sokka answered.
"It's not like he can hear you, Snoozles," Toph said playfully.
"I know, but it's like I have to respond. You know what I mean?" Sokka asked.
"No, I don't," Toph replied.
[Cut to a shot of a statue of Fire Lord Zuko holding up a flame. The camera pans down and shows Naga pulling up at the base of the statue. Closer shot of Mako and Korra as they look around. The camera switches to a panning left shot of several citizens chatting and hanging out on the square.]
"Well, this is his usual hangout. You guys seen my brother around here today?"
"Perhaps. My memory's a little... "foggy". Maybe you can help "clear it up"."
"Money for information. Kid's good," Sokka explained.
"Yeah, I seen him."
"What was he doing?"
"H-he was performing some kind of monkey rat circus. And then..."
" And then what? Why did he leave?"
" Shady Shin showed up and flashed some serious cash. Bo took off with him in his hot rod. The Triple Threats? The Red Monsoons? The Agni Kais? All the triads are muscling up for something real big. Now that's all you're getting outta me!"
"What's he talking about?"
"Sounds like there's a turf war brewing. And Bolin's about to get caught right in the middle of it."
"Sounds to me that the Bolin guy is in a heap of trouble," Toph said.
"If he knew they were trouble, then why did he agree to go?" Katara questioned.
"I'm not sure, but something tells me that it's not the first time he's done that," Zuko stated.
[Korra pulls the reins to halt her mount, but to no avail. Front shot as Naga turns around the corner of a building, the ferret waiting for them. Aerial shot as the fire ferret runs down a street and climbs a street light as Naga approaches.]
"No, Naga! Pabu's a friend, not a snack."
"We gotta hurry."
"Something's not right. There's usually thugs posted out front. We better be cautious."
[Side shot as he presses his back against the door post and peers into the door window, while signaling Korra that it is safe to come up. As he slinks back into the shadows, Korra casually strolls toward the door, forsaking any sneaking up. Switch to inside the room to a shot of the front door as the double doors are being kicked out of their hinges by Korra. The small party enters the empty room, looking around. The building is strangely empty and the furniture is broken.]
"Whoa, look at that mess," Aang said.
"Bolin? You in here?"
[A truck's engine roars outside, and Korra and Mako promptly run out the back. As they crash through the door, they're just in time to witness a truck and five motorcycles drive off. Cut to a closer shot of the back of the truck, its doors still open. Switch to a frontal shot of Bolin and Shady Shin, both tied down and gagged, sitting inside the truck.]
"Wow, that polar-bear dog sure runs fast."
They watch as Korra and Mako engaged in a fight between the two masked motorcyclists. One of the motorcyclists delivers several kick punches to Korra's arm, effectively turning it numb. Katara realized the technique right away.
"Chi-blocking," Katara whispered.
"What?" Aang said.
"It's a technique that Ty Lee used on me and several others. She blocked people's chi to disable their bending."
"Oh yeah, I remember that," Sokka said.
"Ugh, I can't bend. I can't bend!"
"Calm down, it'll wear off. Those guys were chi blockers. They're Amon's henchmen."
"Amon? That anti-bending guy with a mask?"
"Yeah, he's the leader of the Equalists."
"Sokka, are you writing this down?" Suki asked.
"I'm wayyy ahead of you," Sokka said, already jotting down notes.
[Fade to an overview shot of Republic City Park, covered in morning fog. They pull up at a fountain, and the shot switches to a close side view of Naga as she bends over to drink. Pabu climbs on top of Naga's head and takes a drink, too.]
"The first day I got into town, I ran into an Equalist protester over there."
"And you think they'll know where Bolin is?"
"It's our only lead right now."
"So, why is Bolin running around with the Triple Threat Triad, anyway?"
"Well, we... we used to do some work for them back in the day."
"What!? Wha- Are you some kind of criminal?"
"No! You don't know what you're talking about. I just ran numbers for them and stuff. We were orphans out on the street; I did what I had to do to survive and protect my little brother."
"I'm sorry. It must have been really hard. Can I ask what happened to your parents?"
"They were mugged by a firebender. He cut them down right in front of me. I was eight."
"That poor guy," Suki said.
Everyone felt pity for Mako and Bolin; they could relate, as most of their own families weren't perfect either.
[Switch to an aerial shot of the party, all asleep. Korra and Mako lean on each other, sleeping against Naga's side.]
"Equality now! Equality now! We want equality now!"
"Korra lets out a horrified gasp as she realizes she is leaning on Mako, and they both scramble away from each other out of embarrassment."
"I-I... er... eheh, humn, hmmehem."
"Non-benders of Republic City..."
"That's the guy."
"Amon calls you to action! Take back your city! It's time for the... It's you again! You can not silence me, Avatar!"
"That guy's voice is downright annoying," Toph said.
"No one knows what the Revelation is! And I have no idea what happened to your friend. But if he's a bender, then my bet is he's getting what's coming to him."
"Where's it happening?"
"Hey! What's going on over there?"
"The Avatar's oppressing us. Help!"
"Why didn't the Equalists put a location on these?"
"Probably because they don't want just anyone waltzing in to their big 'Revelation', whatever that is. I bet the information is hidden on here somehow. Look at the backs. There's four different images."
"So, it's a puzzle?"
"Yeah, of a map!"
"Bingo. That must be where it's going down."
"That was surprisingly easy to locate," Sokka said.
"This is a private event. No one gets in without an invitation."
"You mean this?"
"The Revelation is upon us, my brother and sister."
"I knew a lot of people hated benders, but I've never seen so many in one place. Keep your eyes out for Bolin."
"Wow, there's so many," Aang said, shocked.
"Why? We never did anything bad," Katara said.
"Well sometim-" Sokka began, with Toph punching him before he could finish. "I don't know."
"Please welcome your hero, your savior... Amon!"
"Hmmph, that guy doesn't sound like a savior," Toph stated sarcastically.
"No, but he's A MONster....get it? Cause AMON and-" Sokka started to say, but was cut off by Zuko. "We get it, Sokka."
" My quest for equality began many years ago. When I was a boy, my family and I lived on a small farm. We weren't rich, and none of us were benders. This made us very easy targets for the firebender who extorted my father. One day, my father confronted this man, but when he did, that firebender took my family from me. Then, he took my face. I've been forced to hide behind a mask ever since. As you know, the Avatar has recently arrived in Republic City. And if she were here, she would tell you that bending brings balance to the world. But, she is wrong. The only thing bending has brought to the world, is suffering. It has been the cause of every war in every era. But that is about to change. I know you have been wondering, "What is the Revelation?" You are about to get your answer. Since the beginning of time, the spirits have acted as guardians of our world, and they have spoken to me. They say the Avatar has failed humanity."
"Excuse me?" Aang said firmly.
"That is why the spirits have chosen me to usher in a new era of balance. They have granted me a power that will make Equality a reality. The power to take a person's bending away. Permanently."
"What?! That's impossible!" Aang exclaimed.
"It's not," Zuko replied, making everyone confused. "I didn't tell you, Aang, but when you defeated my father, you did something that was truly amazing...you took his bending away."
"What?! But I don't even know how to do that!" Aang said, still confused.
"I know it seems surreal, but you did it." Before he could continue, something Amon said caught their attention.
"Now, for a demonstration. Please welcome Lightning Bolt Zolt. Leader of the Triple Threat Triad, and one of the most notorious criminals in Republic City."
"Ah, boo yourself!"
"Wait, we can't fight them all. We need to be smart about this."
"Then come up with a game plan, 'Team Captain'."
"Zolt has amassed a fortune by extorting and abusing non-benders. But his reign of terror is about to come to an end. Now, in the interest of fairness, I will give Zolt the chance to fight to keep his bending."
"You're gonna regret doing that, pal!"
The Gaang watched as Amon dodged all of Zolt's attacks with ease.
[Amon grabs hold of Zolt's wrist, and twists it around and away from him. The lighting crashes into the stage and then quickly up the the ceiling as Amon turns his hands further away. Zolt's neck is being grabbed by Amon's hand. Lightning still shooting out of Zolt's fingers, as Amon moves his hand from Zolt's wrist to his forehead. After Zolt collapses weakly onto the ground, he tries to firebend at Amon but with no avail.]
"No way," Sokka said.
It was a trick, an act, everything was a set up... Aang thought. But it's right there in front of me...Amon did take his bending.
"Wha... What did you do to me?"
"Your firebending is gone. Forever. The era of bending is over. A new era of equality has begun!"
"Any ideas yet?"
"I think so. See those machines? They're powered by water and steam. If you create some cover, I can grab Bolin without anyone seeing. Then, we duck out of here."
"Works for me. Mako, good luck."
"What else can go wrong?" Sokka asked.
"It's not enough."
"Is there a problem, my brother?"
"What are you doing back here?"
"Uh... looking for the bathroom?"
Sokka groaned. "That excuse."
"Thanks. This should be enough."
"Uh, hello, Amon, sir. I think there's been a big misunderstanding."
"Bolin, you all right?"
"Yes! Mako! I love you!"
The Gaang chuckled at Bolin's humor. They watched as Mako and Bolin battled one of Amon's henchmen. Mako and Bolin are shocked by kali sticks and fall unconscious.
"You benders need to understand, there's no place in the world for you anymore."
"But benders aren't bad! They make our world unique!" Suki stated.
"Sneak Attack! Way to go, Korra!" Sokka said as a pillar of rock shot up beside the Lieutenant and thrusted him roughly against the building.
"I wouldn't count us out just yet. Naga!"
They watched as Korra and her friends escape on Naga. Several Equalists immediately run after them until they are stopped by Amon.
"Let her go. She's the perfect messenger to tell the city of my power."
[The shot pans down, leveling with Tenzin and two White Lotus sentries. Switch to a closeup of the threesome; they turn at Korra who is approaching them. Tenzin moves to meet her.]
"Thank goodness. I was just about to send out a search party. Are you all right? Korra, what happened? Did you find your friend?"
"Yes, but...I was at an Equalist rally. I saw Amon."
"He can take people's bending away. For good."
"That's... that's impossible. Only the Avatar has ever possessed that ability."
"Then why can he do it?" Aang questioned.
"But I saw him do it."
"I believe you. I don't know how Amon has achieved this power, but this means the revolution is more dangerous than ever. No bender is safe."
[Fades to credits.]
"Wow, I can't really say anything...I'm shocked," Suki said.
"We all are," Katara replied.
"Okay guys, I didn't have enough time to tell you, but I saw a glimpse of the future earlier," Sokka said. "You did?" Katara asked.
"Yeah. And I think I know who Amon is..."
- This chapter was released 24 days after the second one.
- In the beginning, there was some slight Sukka and Tokka shipping.
- This was the most serious and longest chapter so far.
- Sokka did have a glimpse of the future, similar to Katara's vision in The Promise Part 3.
- The little brackets containing information on the next scene (like in the episode transcripts) was editor Magic's idea.
- Cliffhanger! Sorry, I had to do it.
