Chapter Fifty: Breaking the Rules Edit
“So, your dad doesn’t like me, does he?”
She stares out at the view below her. Ba Sing Se. The city stretches, an endless collection of houses, of people, of every single thing imaginable.
“He does like you. It’s me he’s trying to protect,” she attempts to explain, one hand absentmindedly fiddling with a lock of hair gone off course. “I’m only fourteen. You know that.”
She can feel his frustration radiating in waves. “Don’t you remember that night on Ember Island? This is like the exact same conversation!” he exclaims. “Come on, Katara. Please. The War’s over.”
She nods, and still she glances away.
He exhales loudly and drops his head onto the railing of the balcony.
Reaching out hesitantly, she puts a comforting hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay, Aang. Come on. You know I like you.”
He raises his head, and she watches his stormy gray eyes. There’s so much in them. Pain, and turmoil, and rage, and fear, and grief. But there’s also love, and joy, and happiness, and peace, and spirit. His inner self. Katara . . . what are you doing?
“Aang . . . listen . . . I’m sorry,” she whispers, drawing him into her arms, and he comes willingly, resting his chin in the crook of her arm. “The War’s over, but there’s still a lot to do before we can think about that. People still don’t like the Fire Nation; you know that. It’s like Zuko said. The road ahead is difficult. Okay?”
He tenses. “Like Zuko said?”
“No, no, Aang. That’s not what I meant.” She gently strokes his head, and he relaxes in her embrace. “Come on. You know don’t I like him like that. I like you. If anyone’s like my brother, it’s Zuko.”
“I know. I’m sorry, too.” She is pleased and relieved that his voice is back to its usual perk and charm. “I shouldn’t be asking you. I’m practically begging. I guess when you’re ready . . . when the world is back on track . . . when your dad approves . . .”
She hugs him tightly, so very tightly, and she can feel his hesitation at first, but then he returns it. “Oh, Aang. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He tilts his head to the side and grins at her. “Well, you could have Zuko all to yourself,” he teases, “but I don’t think Mai would like that.”
“Why would I want Zuko? I already have you.” She inhales lightly, and a wide smile spreads across her face. “Aang . . .”
She tips forward until their lips to touch, and then she presses herself against him, opening her mouth just enough—
He jerks away abruptly, and she is left with a disappointed feeling. She is surprised at the sudden blush on his face as he looks behind her.
“Oh, um . . .” He smiles sheepishly. “Hi, Katara’s dad.”
Lmao this chapter was so fun to write. This image crisis is making me sick. Can we please get over it already?
Aang is paranoid about Zuko and Zutara in general . . . but Zutara is debunked!
This is one of the few chapters from Katara's POV. Actually, the further we go through the fanon, the more I put in Katara POV chapters. Hm . . .
"She gently strokes his head, and he relaxes in her embrace." -> I always imagine Aang's head to be sensitive. That and his big ears. Ignore me and my fetishes.
So what happens when Hakoda finds Aang snogging Katara? Good question! Too bad you'll never find out. Ha, ha, ha! >=]
