Origin of firebending mural Zuko, something happened to Book Five: Renaissance, Part 1 in the last hundred years.
This fanon has been discontinued, but is still available to read for your enjoyment.

Book Five: Renaissance, Part 1 (兴一) is the fifth and penultimate book of The Legend of Korra, spanning a total of one prologue and twelve episodes. Set two years after the fall of the Earth Empire, the original prologue debuted for reading on July 28, 2015, but was updated with a newly written one on October 7, 2015, and completed on October 9, 2015. The first episode was planned to debut for reading on October 3, 2015, the one-year anniversary of the first episode of Book Four: Balance, "After All These Years", but was pushed to December 19, 2015, the one-year anniversary of the final episodes of Book Four: Balance, "Day of the Colossus" and "The Last Stand". The reason for the two-month delay was a redraft for the entire book, as well as its sequel, Book Six: Renaissance, Part 2.

Prologue: New Growth[]

For each year Avatar Korra lived, a lesson was learned.

And it was in the year of the Red Lotus that Korra learnt a vital lesson she would carry for the rest of her life. "New growth cannot exist without first the destruction of the old."

Korra slowly walked towards the edge of the dock on Air Temple Island. The moonlight's reflection shimmered across the dark body of water. The sun would rise soon, and once it rose, Korra would rise anew.

A silver dagger was the only company Korra had as she walked the dock. Once she reached the edge, Korra carefully fell to her knees. She lifted her head to stare up at the moon. It was a beautiful night; a cool breeze lightly travelled across the landscape around Korra.

And when she looked down at the water, all she could see was her reflection. She couldn't believe herself; she had let her hair grow out so long. The person looking back at Korra from the water was not herself; her time as the Avatar had changed that, permanently. Once she was a child; now she had reached adulthood. Change was necessary, and there was no denying the winds of change that had blown by Korra during her life.

"New growth cannot exist without first the destruction of the old."

Korra pushed her fingers through her hair, a final goodbye of sorts.

And with one slice of her dagger, her hair drifted in the breeze, as light as feathers.

Overview[]

Two years have passed since Avatar Korra ended the tyranny of Kuvira and her Earth Empire. With Kuvira's surrender, the Earth Kingdom was guaranteed a formal renaissance with former Prince Wu's instatement of democracy across the nation. Now, Republic City has healed itself from the destruction caused by Kuvira's Spirit Energy Cannon, but darker forces threaten to wreak havoc on the newly re-birthed world Korra fought so hard to keep in balance...

Inspiration[]

Concept Art[]

Concept art from The Legend of Korra was a major influence and my drive to begin to draft Book Five: Renaissance, Part 1. Seeing concept art that was either used or unused in the final cut of the series sparked different scenarios and plot details that I would have never been able to fathom without the aid of the fantastic artwork.

Young Unalaq concept art

Concept art of a young Unalaq inspired a two-part episode late in the book.

Pop Culture and Other Media[]

Dragon Ball Super[]

One of the many sources of inspiration for this work of fanfiction was the announcement of the new 2015 anime series Dragon Ball Super; Sparky Sparky Boom Woman is a huge fan of the original 1986 Dragon Ball and 1996 Dragon Ball Z, and this is a homage to both The Legend of Korra and Dragon Ball.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back[]

Another source of inspiration for this work of fanfiction was the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back, the fifth episode of the sci-fi saga Star Wars; if Book Five: Renaissance, Part 1 is The Empire Strikes Back of The Legend of Korra, then Book Six: Renaissance, Part 2 is Return of the Jedi, the sixth episode of Star Wars.

Acknowledgements and Credits[]

I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender nor The Legend of Korra. All of the rights go to Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, everyone who had anything to do with the creation of the breathtaking series, and Nickelodeon. Thank you so much for everything you have gifted us fans with, and we cannot wait to watch and read all of your future works.

The poster I have created would not be complete without the beautiful image of Korra. This beautiful piece of art is drawn by Bryan Konietzko, and became my inspiration to write this series. So Bryan Konietzko, I thank you.
