Ty Lee reflects on her life since leaving the Kyoshi Warriors, but she is shaken from her thoughts when a violent storm threatens her village. But there is something not quite right about the storm, and when the sky turns red she knows that it's up to her to get to the bottom of it...
Book 3 Chapter 7: The Beginning of the End
Ty Lee gazed out of the large window and sighed as she watched storm clouds drift through the sky, slowly descending over the town. Below her, Fire Nation families rushed through the busy alleyways, hastening to finish their shopping before the inevitable storm set in.
Ty lee sighed and blew her hair out of her face. She reached backwards until she felt the tips of her fingers touch the floor behind her, and she acrobatically lifted her feet in the air and began walking on her hands.
This is such a boring day, she thought to herself.
Ever since leaving the Kyoshi Warriors, she had missed their energy. But it had not been the right fit for her. In prison, she had felt that they were the people that she would want to spend the rest of her life with, but after the Great War ended she had quickly learned otherwise. Every morning all of the Kyoshi Warriors would don their ceremonial uniforms and makeup and begin training as one big unit, all practicing the same forms and the same exercises.
It was nothing like Ty Lee had anticipated. Soon, she had felt once again like she was just one more empty face, lost in the crowd of identical painted faces and handcrafted fans. She had joined the circus to avoid being part of a matched set, and that had ended up being her exact fate at Kyoshi Island. After a couple months, she could no longer take the sameness, the conformity. Her aura had pointed her in the direction of the Fire Nation, and she gladly followed it.
Since then, she had spent her days here in this usually lively town honing her acrobatic skills and teaching gymnastics to children and adults alike. In her spare time, she enjoyed helping people with their day-to-day errands and spending time with her friends in the small town. It was a peaceful life, and one that she was surprisingly content with after the craziness of the War had finally died down.
But today was different. As she stared out at the dark grey storm clouds rolling in from over the ocean, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
Then, in the blink of an eye, her feeling was confirmed.
A powerful thunderbolt broke from the enormous approaching storm and struck the center of the town, where it left a large scar in the earth. In the following moments, an innumerable multitude of lightning bolts broke the stillness of the night sky and assaulted the small island town. Ty Lee screamed and dove away from the window a moment before the window frame was struck by an especially violent thunderbolt that exploded the wall and left it a gaping, smoking hole.
She jumped to her feet but was again immediately thrust back to the floor as the building lurched out from beneath her. She nimbly cartwheeled toward the destroyed wall and leaped out of it, extending her arms and grasping a clothesline, swinging off of it for support, and landing perfectly on a neighboring building. She turned back around to see her humble home collapse in on itself, and she cried out in exasperated pain.
She screamed again as she felt the floor rumble and slide out from under her. She slid off the slanted roof and was shocked when, she landed in knee-deep water that was flooding the streets. The island was sinking into the ocean...
"Ty Lee!" a young boy called to her from the second floor of a nearby house. "The island! What's happening?"
Ty Lee screamed in disdain as another thunderbolt crashed down, nearly on top of her. She gritted her teeth in a desperate effort not to scream again. She watched as cracks appeared in the cloud-filled sky, making the clouds look like sinister pieces of a giant puzzle. The cloud pieces above her cracked and crumbled, and she shielded her eyes as they dissolved into tumult of water and ice that plummeted down on top of her. Recovering quickly, she looked up again to see the sky transformed from dark grey to an eerie reddish hue. What was going on here?
In that instant, Ty Lee knew what she had to do. She hadn't a clue what was happening, or why, or how, but she knew that it was up to her to get to the bottom of it. She waded out of the water and set off at a brisk, determined pace toward the Fire Nation Royal Palace. Whatever was happening, she had to do whatever she could to try to stop it...
So now we get a look into how Azula's meddling will begin affecting the Earth as well. And it won't be pretty. All that talk of balance in the show? It wasn't just talk...
I'm not a huge fan of this chapter, just because it seems a little...blunt? I wish I had brought Ty Lee into the story a little sooner so her story didn't seem so sudden, but oh well. Ty Lee fans rejoice! She has a part in Book 3's plot! Haha.
Side note: At the time of publishing this chapter, I've written the rest of the series minus an epilogue chapter, and it's ended up being 34 chapters (Book 3 with 14 chapters+ an epilogue that will be written soon). Book 3 is vastly longer than the other two books, but in my opinion wrapping up this story properly is much more important than the number of chapters in each book. And right now I think the finale is really fulfilling for the series. Once it's out, I hope you agree. :) talk • contribs) 20:41, February 12, 2011 (UTC)(
Aaaaand question for anyone still reading to the bottom of this unusually long Author's Note (sorry!), what do you think of my continuation of Ty Lee's storyline? I always wondered why she would want to join the Kyoshi Warriors after joining the circus just to become unique...so please comment!
