Hama was looking at them, as if she was prepared to kill them in seconds. After two moments, which seemed like ages to Aang, she closed her eyes and fell on the floor. Katara, mechanically, bent down to help her get on her feet.

"I am not... that person... anymore... Please..." Hama was talking to someone who wasn't there.

"It's okay, Hama, we will get you out of here and you can eat a little. Okay?" asked Katara, holding Hama so she wouldn't fall. They all started walking to the exit.

"We can get there more easily," said Toph, and then Earthbended the piece of earth they were standing on, making it move and deliver them straight to the exit.

"Thank you, Toph," said Aang.

After some hours, Hama was wearing one of Katara's dresses, since she was thin enough to be able to fit in it, had taken a bath and eaten a big roast fish and some vegetables. She was now sitting at the garden of the house she lived when she met them and was looking at the moon. It was full.

"As I understand," she started, "you think I am the one who informed the Dai Li about Bloodbending."

"You must understand, Hama, that it does seem logical," said Sokka

"But it was not me..."

"We all understand you have changed, Hama." Katara confronted her.

"You are a whole different person now." Aang told her.

"But it really was not me. You think I am the first Bloodbender, but I am not."

"What do you mean?" asked Aang, worried and a bit angry. Who was that Bloodbender? He seemed a horrible person.

"He was an Avatar, Aang. He was the first Avatar."

"I guess he didn't use it. The Avatars protect the world. He must had been experimenting, right?" asked Toph, feeling uncomfortable with the prospect of an evil Avatar.

"You must understand, that this Avatar was rebellious. He wanted to go over the top, experience bending spheres he would not dare even to think of discovering if he knew their power. He wouldn't listen to the gentle spirits who told him not to do what he was about to do. He discovered Bloodbending and using it, he separated the nations. They were one that time. The time this Avatar appeared, people did not bend and the spirits lived at the Earth. There were no four nations, just one, united and strong. Then one spirit, named Skalan, thought the spirits should put all their wisdom together into one and only person. They would give him all their power and knowledge. After some time, maybe decades or just weeks, they had created this person, known as the Chosen One. The people of Earth had him as their god, and he liked the way they respected him. He started to think he was better even than the spirits. He wanted to be remembered, to do special things, to reach the top because he had a need to see the other people thinking he was better than them. He liked the idea of making the Spirit Master, the greatest of all spirits, know he was more wise and strong than him. He started using his knowledge to push his body to the limits and succeeded, making him unlock all the seven chakras and master all of the bending arts, including Energybending. He was specially charmed by Waterbending, and realized that wherever there was life, there was water."

"Didn't you tell us you discovered it?" asked Sokka.

"When I thought of the idea, he appeared to me."

"Why didn't you tell us back then?" asked Sokka. Hama ignored him.

"He said he had been waiting thousands of years to find someone equal to himself, and this someone was me. He shared with me the secrets of Bloodbending, and told me to call him when I was ready to join him to immortality. Then, he left. After the villagers discovered my power, they wanted to lock me in the underground cave. I could easily stop them, but I didn't. I was angry with myself, but filled with self-pity at the same time. I let them get me in the cave and lock me there, and never tried to escape although I could. And he came again. This time he was angry. He told me I shouldn't have let them do these things to me, I was better than them. I should not let them handle me like a nasty and dirty non-bender. He said that if I didn't want to use my powers, I had to stop having them. He attacked me. I managed to survive, only because he was a spirit. He couldn't use the full power of his. I stayed in my cave. I knew he would come back, eventually. But he hasn't come yet. Someone else came to visit me in the dark cell I lived in. One of the villagers. He was there to... hurt me, this is a proper word. He wanted to make me pay for my sins, but after I explained to him I had changed, he told me he actually was there to inform me about what was going on at the Earth Kingdom. He told me the Dai Li had found a new ally, but he knew nothing else. However, it was said he was a massive threat. He was a new Dai Li agent. I didn't tell him, but I knew who he was. But I couldn't understand how Zuphokkang could have communicated with them. He could not become an actual person. But how could he be a Dai Li agent if he was just a spirit? I don't know what he did, but it seems like he has won over Death himself." Aang wanted to talk, but his body wouldn't obey his mind. Still, there was one question he had to ask.

"If this person is an Avatar, I must be able to talk to him... right?"

"You have to look very, very deep in yourself. I do not know if you will be able to do it. But it would be great if you managed to. You might be able to stop him, or discover some of his plans. If you manage to do this, I will consider showing you the most advanced technique any Avatar has used. Except Zuphokkang, of course. He invented it himself."

"I can't believe that person was an Avatar," said Sokka, looking a bit hurt. It was not that easy, understanding everything you believed on since you were a child is wrong. He had always thought the Avatar was the good guy.

"Well, he has nothing to do with Aang and the other Avatars," said Katara, afraid Aang might be hurt and ashamed of the fact he was related to such a person. Aang ignored her.

"If the spirits saw how dangerous it was putting so much wisdom and abilities in one person, why did they let the Avatar Circle continue?" he asked. He knew this would mean he would not be the Avatar, but being the Avatar felt like he had done a terrible crime at the moment. He felt he was more evil than Ozai was.

"They made them to protect the world from further harm. Already people had become benders and started abusing their power to start wars. Also, they were afraid Zuphokkang would come back. They were sure he would never let himself die like that. The rest of the Avatars exist to fix the first Avatar's mistakes." Explained Hama.

"And now what do we do?" asked Toph.

"I think we should travel to a forest only I and a very small group of people know about. It is a place more spiritual than the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole. Zuphokkang might find me there, but me life is worthless in front of yours, Aang. We are going to Agathy."

They started preparing for the long journey to Agathy. Hama' is the bravest person I have ever met, Aang thought. Agathy seemed like heaven. But would it turn to hell? Like everything does these days, Aang thought.
