Yakiri had been abandoned by her parents at a young age and she didn't remember them. She discovered she was an Airbender while living in an orphanage and used her abilities to escape and then to keep herself alive.
Eventually, a woman found her and after learning she was a Bender she strangely showed her kindness. That act of kindness had an impact that stuck with Yakiri. It was the only bit of hope she had left for non-benders but otherwise she seemed to dislike them as much as they disliked benders.
The woman raised her for a few years and Yakiri had started to heal. The kind woman even tried to get in touch with the remaining Air Nomads so that they could come and collect Yakiri and teach her to bend but it had been a trap.
The Yi Yang arrived instead. Yakiri tried to save the woman but the Yi Yang slaughtered her and Yakiri barely escaped them. From then on out she kept to herself and stole as a means to survive.
Yakiri isn't the most spiritual girl. She has had to fend for herself the majority of her life and because she wasn't raised by Airbenders, their traditions and beliefs weren't instilled upon her. This heavily contributes to her inadequate skills at Airbending.
She is tough but also compassionate as she has seen both aspects of life. She has dealt with bigotry and discrimination from non-benders yet has also received kindness and understanding from them as well. This tends to caust trust issues when she first meets people but after she chooses to open up, it's easy to see that she has the potential to be an Airbender.
She seems to generally care about her appearance as Kaito had remarked that she took a long time getting ready for lunch even while imprisoned in Camp Hu Saia.
