Plot
Edit
Soon after the end of the Hundred Year War, Avatar Aang revisits his old home, the Southern Air Temple, with Toph, Sokka, and Katara. Aang and Katara have entered a romantic relationship after their first kiss following Aang's battle with the former Fire Lord, Ozai. Zuko, the new Fire Lord, and Suki, now have important duties to attend to, and, unfortunately, could not accompany Aang on his trip. Everyone is slightly more serious, as they now bear the scars and memories of the occasionally traumatic events of the war. After arriving at the temple, Aang makes a shocking suggestion.
| Aang and Katara reminisce while sitting together against a wall overlooking the mountains. Sokka and Toph wander other sections of the temple with Appa and Momo. | |
| Katara | It's weird coming back here, isn't it? The first place you brought Sokka and I after we agreed to help you master the elements. It reminds me of when you were afraid to accept your role as the Avatar. But now look at you. Thirteen years old and a fully realized Avatar. Think about it; you weren't even supposed to have been told of your identity until you were sixteen. [There is a slight pause as Katara smiles and glances admiringly at Aang.] I'm so proud of you. |
|---|---|
| Aang | [As if unsatisfied.] Thanks, Katara. [In a slightly perky manner.] You've come a long way, too. I still can't believe that you beat Azula one-on-one. Every time I fought her, either neither of us won, or she did. [Aang remembers his battles with Azula and shudders.] Her blue flames always scared me more than regular fire. |
| Katara | Well, I can't take all the credit. In fact, I really shouldn't take any. Zuko did all the work. [Dismayed.] I can't imagine how painful it must have been for Zuko to see his sister like that... she went completely insane. I wish their dispute could have been settled more peacefully. They ended up facing each other in an Agni Kai, brother against sister in a fight to the death. It was heartbreaking... but at least no one had to die. [Realizing something.] You know... I would be dead if it weren't for Zuko. Azula shot lightning right at me, but he jumped in front of me and took it to save me. I still haven't thanked him properly for that... |
| Aang | I'm sure you'll get the chance to thank him soon enough. And if we can't find time for it, maybe we can get Hawky to deliver a message to Zuko. |
| Katara | [Jokingly.] We'll have to get Sokka's approval first. |
| Aang | [Lightening up.] Yeah, and if he can't spare Hawky, maybe Sokka's instincts can deliver the message! |
| Aang and Katara laugh together, both managing to get their minds off of bad memories. Suddenly, Aang remembers something that depresses him, and Katara takes notice. | |
| Katara | Aang? [Concerned.] You seem down again. What's wrong? |
| Aang stares into the sky, longing for something, then turns his attention to Katara. | |
| Aang | I just thought about the Air Nomad Genocide. |
| Katara | Oh... is there anything I can do to make you feel better? You wanna talk about it? |
| Aang | It's just... now that the war is over, I have more to think about other than how I'll defeat the Fire Lord and save the world. Now that all that pressure is gone, and peace is finally being achieved, I realize how much I miss my old life here... and how much I miss being among other airbenders. |
| Katara | [In an attempt to comfort Aang.] I know what it's like to be the last bender of your kind... |
| Aang | This is different. You were the last waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe, not the whole world. Your people still live and thrive in the North and South poles. Even the Foggy Swamp is home to waterbenders. You still have a family, but I'm the last of my kind. The rest of the airbenders are gone. |
| Katara puts her arm around Aang and leans against his side. | |
| Katara | Sokka and I are your family now, remember? |
| Aang | Yeah... I guess you're right. |
| Aang thoughtfully looks at the ground in front of him for a moment, and then to Katara, with a dire look in his eyes. | |
| Aang | Katara, I don't have to be the last airbender. |
| Katara | [Confused.] What do you mean? |
| Aang | You and I have the power to change the world. To make it what it used to be. A home for benders of every element, including air. For too long now, I've been the only airbender on Earth. Please, you must understand my desire to give prosperity to the Air Nomads, Katara... |
| [Katara pulls her arm away from Aang's shoulder, and looks at him with her mouth agape.] | |
| Katara | [Shocked.] Wait, do you mean...? [Aang nods.] Aang, I don't know... I mean, being together is one thing, but that... I need some time to take in the idea. |
| Aang hangs his head in shame. | |
| Aang | I understand. I'm sorry if I'm putting pressure on you. |
| Katara | [While getting up and heading towards the exit.] It's okay. I'm going to go lay down, probably for the rest of the night. I just need some time to myself, to think... you know. [Before leaving Aang alone.] Well... goodnight. |
| Aang | Goodnight. |
| Katara exits. Aang sighs, and wonders what the consequences of his actions will be. He soon begins to drift asleep, and spends the night huddled up against the wall. Morning comes. | |
| Katara | [As she enters the room in which she and Aang spoke previously.] Aang? |
| Katara notices Aang is still asleep, and she covers her mouth as to not wake him. Instead, she kneels down beside him with her hands in her lap, and waits for Aang to awaken. A short while later, his eyes begin to open slightly. | |
| Aang | [He tiredly rubs his eyes and yawns.] Katara? |
| Katara | Good morning. |
| Aang stretches, gets up and kneels in front of Katara. The two smile at each other for a brief moment, Aang's smile more faint. | |
| Aang | [His smile fades, and he prepares for the worst.] So... did you think about what I said yesterday? |
| Katara | I did... [With uncertainty.] it's one crazy idea, Aang. |
| Aang's hopeful expression turns into one of utter disappointment. | |
| Aang | [Gloomily.] I'll take that as a no. |
| Katara | You didn't let me finish. It's a crazy idea... but I like it. |
| Aang | [Aang uses airbending to jump several feet into air in celebration.] Yeeess! |
| Katara | You seem surprised. |
| Aang | I'm beyond surprised! I'm... I'm amazed! And so happy... this means more to me than you know. Thank you, Katara. |
| Katara | Of course, Aang. I admit, for a moment, I didn't know if I could do it. It's a huge step in life I didn't expect you'd want to take so soon. |
| Aang | Well, I don't want to have kids now, or very soon. We're way too young for that. But rebuilding this broken world and molding its current state into a new era of peace is going to be a lot of work, and with such a long road to go down, [Trying to avoid sounding rude.] I guess I just didn't want to risk getting that same "this isn't the right time" thing you said to me when the war was still going on. |
| Katara | [Blushing.] Oh yeah, that... well don't worry. That was then, and this is now. I'll find time whenever I can to make for you. Let's go slow, and we can take the next step whenever you're ready. I'll always be there with you when you need me, no matter what you need me for. I'll do this because I love you. |
| Aang | [While tearing up and smiling.] I love you too, Katara. |
| Aang joins his hands with Katara's, and the two kiss. Sokka enters the room. | |
| Sokka | You guys ready to go yet? Appa is. He's so hungry he actually ate Momo! Or at least he tried to... [Sokka sees Aang and Katara kissing and is disturbed. He facepalms.] |
| Aang notices Sokka at the doorway, and separates his lips from Katara's as she, too, notices Sokka. | |
| Aang | [Embarrassed.] Oh, hey, Sokka... |
| Sokka | Aw, geez, you guys are kissing again?! At least do it somewhere secret so that poor, innocent people like me don't have to walk in on this! [Sokka turns around and drags his feet out of the room.] Toph and I will be waiting for you. Don't spend all day in here, okay? |
| Aang and Katara watch Sokka go, then look back at each other and smile. The two stand up, and follow Sokka. Soon they arrive at the location in which Sokka and Toph are waiting with Appa and Momo. | |
| Toph | Hey Twinkletoes, Sweetness. [Suspiciously.] What had you two so busy all this time...? |
| Sokka | Yeah, what had you soooo busy? [Sokka stares at Aang and Katara with wide, accusing eyes.] |
| Aang | Just... talking about the future. |
| Katara | Yeah. [Katara grabs Aang's hand.] Our future. |
