Escape from the Spirit World, although a game, consists of stories and plot details that are considered to be canonical. The game is meant to explain the events between the end of Book 2- The Crossroads of Destiny and the start of Book 3- The Awakening.
After being shot by Azula's lethal lightning attack, Aang falls into a deep slumber. Escape from the Spirit World explains that while Aang's mind and body were immobile, his soul was trapped in the Spirit World. He encounters Princess Yue, the Moon Spirit, who informs him that if he does not reconnect with his past four lives, the Avatar Cycle will end.
Each chapter follows the same pattern. You do a small task, and this triggers the appearance of a spirit. The spirit will lead you towards the Avatar you're looking for. However, you'll need to play the game (though this can always be skipped easily just by scrolling down and clicking "Move to Next Challenge". Afterwards, you encounter Koh the Face Stealer. He'll ask you a question. If you get it wrong, Aang is unable to restrain his fear, and Koh manages to successfully steal his face. If you get it right though, Koh will give you directions to the Avatar you're looking for. You'll then need a code to progress. You are supposed to watch Nickelodeon's Saturday program to find this, but they will be listed below. Once you've entered the correct code, you can either download the podcast or watch the online comic book of Aang encountering one of his four past lives.

[edit] Chapter 1: Avatar Roku
To start off with, your small task is to collect fireflies. Simply, you click and drag them into the nearby torch. This causes Fang, Roku's faithful animal guide to appear. Fang will offer to guide Aang to Avatar Roku, through means of a challenge: the game "Aang On". Koh will then appear. He'll let you pass, if you answer his question:
"Where did Aang, along with his friends Katara and Sokka, first learn about the past Avatars?"
A) Southern Air Temple
B) Northern Air Temple
C) Western Water Fortress
D) Northeastern Earth Mound
The answer is of course A) The Southern Air Temple. Koh will allow you to pass, and tell you to follow the Fire Geysers. The code needed to pass is: PATHIK. Once you've entered it, you may download the podcast or watch the online comic book of Aang encountering Avatar Roku.
Avatar Roku Online Comic Book
Aang explains his extreme shame at failing to master the Avatar State. However, Avatar Roku appeases him, explaining that he too had problems with the Avatar State. He tried to master it by learning from Fire Sage Kaja, grandfather of Fire Sage Shyu, but Roku just couldn't. He was impatient and sought other ways to master the Avatar State. He devised a plan to use the energy from the sun of the winter solstice to aid him. On the winter solstice, he aligned his eyes with a beam of light coming from the winter solstice sun. The method worked, but he was stuck in the Avatar State. He destroyed the top half of the Avatar Temple on Crescent Island. Fortunately, Kaja was wise and knew how to break Roku out of the Avatar State. Roku used this story to explain to Aang that mastering the Avatar State was very difficult, and he should not feel so ashamed. He then tells Aang to meet with Avatar Kyoshi who will be found at the lair of Hei Bai.
[edit] Chapter 2: Avatar Kyoshi
To start off with, there will be some small holes in the sides of trees and rocks. Every so often, a pair of yellow glowing eyes will appear, and you have to click them before they disappear. Simply just keep your mouse hovered over one of the holes until the eyes appear there, and then click. A strange bear-like spirit will appear, and point you towards Avatar Kyoshi. The game is "Four Nations Tournament". Koh will then appear once again, with another question.
"What is the name of the spirit that looks like a panda?"
A) Hei Bai
B) Bai Bai
C) Flai Bai
D) Wai Bai
Once again, the answer is A) Hei Bai. Koh will grant you passage. The code for this chapter is BOSCO. Once you've entered it, you may download the podcast or watch the online comic book of Aang encountering Avatar Kyoshi.
Avatar Kyoshi Online Comic Book
Aang will find Hei Bai, the panda spirit, who will take you to Avatar Kyoshi. She apologises for the events of Avatar Day in the village of Chin, and explains how after she had defeated Chin the Conqueror, balance was restored. However, she made a huge mistake. One of her greatest challenges was to deal with a peasant uprising in Ba Sing Se. The peasants felt the Earth King was outdated, and he no longer represented their wishes and desires. The 46th Earth King summoned Avatar Kyoshi to deal with it. When she refused to, he ordered her arrest. With little difficulty, Kyoshi resisted arrest, and admonished the king for defying his Avatar. He agreed to make a compromise: he would listen to the peasant's wishes, and she would set up a group to uphold and protect the cultural heritage of Ba Sing Se. Immediately, she went on to train a group of elite Earthbenders. They would soon became known as the Dai Li. Aang is shocked by the revelation that an Avatar trained the Dai Li, "the worst, most corrupt Earthbenders in the world". Avatar Kyoshi explained she thought it was a good thing at the time, but how all our actions have an effect, whether positive or negative or not for many lifetimes. She then instructs Aang to go find the Water Avatar who came before her, Avatar Kuruk.
[edit] Chapter 3: Avatar Kuruk
To begin with, you need to find the faceless monkeys. Click on all of them, and the monkey spirit, Enma, from "The Siege of the North, Part 1" will appear. The game is "Treetop Trouble". Koh will then appear once again, with another question.
"What are the fox-like spirits in the Desert Library called?"
A) Truthseekers
B) Learned Ones
C) Knowledgeseekers
D) Booksniffers
The answer is C) Knowledgeseekers, the knowledge-seeking foxes from Wan Shi Tong's library in the Si Wong Desert. Koh will allow you to pass once again. The code for this chapter is KURUK. Once you've entered it, you may download the podcast or watch the online comic book of Aang encountering Avatar Kuruk.
Avatar Kuruk Online Comic Book
Aang and Hei Bai are traversing a murky swamp, when they literally bump into a mysterious man, who introduces himself as Avatar Kuruk. He asks Aang if he's seen a beautiful woman with long, brown hair. When Aang asks, Kuruk explains his history. When he was a young Avatar, he was very proud, boastful and arrogant. He traveled the world, demonstrating his power everywhere, especially to girls. However, at the New Moon Celebration, when the two sister Water tribes met, he met the love of his life, Ummi. It was love at first sight, and Kuruk soon asked her to marry him. They were to be married at the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole. However, on their wedding day, Ummi was pulled into the water by an unseen force. In truth, she had been pulled into the Spirit World. Koh had taken her to punish Kuruk for his past mistakes. Each year, on the anniversary of their wedding, Kuruk would travel to the Spirit World to try and find Koh to kill him and find Ummi but he had no luck. However, Aang recalled when he met Koh in The Siege of the North. One of Koh's faces was that of the woman Kuruk had described, Ummi. Heartened by the knowledge of where his wife was, he set off to go track down Koh, and told Aang to look for the air Avatar, Avatar Yangchen.
[edit] Chapter 4: Avatar Yangchen
This is the hardest starting puzzle yet. You have to play the background music on the bamboo reeds. Once you've achieved the correct order, a light will appear. Aang figures that that must be Avatar Yangchen signaling to him. He wishes he had his glider, and the game is "Ashes in the Air".
"What are the names of the Ocean and Moon Spirits in the Northern Water Tribe Sanctuary?"
A) Lui and Ta
B) Mooi and Gooi
C) Huey and Duey
D) Tui and La
The answer is D) Tui and La. Koh will allow you to pass. The code needed to pass is: YANGCHEN. Once you've entered it, you may download the podcast or watch the online comic book of Aang encountering Avatar Yangchen.
Avatar Yangchen Online Comic Book
Avatar Yangchen will appear atop the mountain in the clouds. She'll ask Aang what he learned from meeting his past lives. Aang realizes that the past Avatars struggled and made mistakes, like him. But then he wonders why the Avatar is born human, and thus allowed to make mistakes, rather than being an all-knowing immortal spirit. Avatar Yangchen explains that the Avatar must experience human emotions to understand how precious human life is. She also explains that Aang's ability to enter the Avatar State has been disrupted, so he'll now have to rely on his friends rather than his past lives, though he can still contact them, as he was contacted and able to contact Roku in The Avatar and the Firelord. She bids him farewell, and informs Aang that when he awakes, this trip to the Spirit World will be like a forgotten dream.
With all the chapters unlocked, you can either reset all the chapters and play the game again, or try out a new exclusive game.
