"Welcome to Republic City"

The Equalists are an organization, led by Amon, that operates in Republic City. They oppose the use of the art of bending, which they see as inherently oppressive and unfair, and seek to equalize society through its elimination. Because of this are occasionally referred to as the "anti-bending revolution".

Equalist fighters are known for employing chi blocking as a means to counteract bending and its advantages. Adept at using long-range weapons to tie together and hold down their enemies, the Equalists utilize other tools and equipment, including smoke grenades and motorcycles. Less skilled Equalist infiltrators are known to utilize special electrical gloves.[1]

History Edit

At some point, Amon, led by feelings of revenge after his parents' murder at the hands of a firebender, founded the organization with the objective of creating an equal society with no benders. The anti-bending movement began recruiting adepts and the Equalists eventually became a formidable group within Republic City.

In order to fulfill their goal, the leader, Amon, decided to accelerate the plans after the early arrival of the Avatar to the city,[2] a reason why an Equalist assembly called The Revelation was scheduled to be carried out. For this purpose, they kidnapped some Triple Threat Triad members and Bolin. Mako and Korra witnessed the Equalist ride away in a truck with their hostages. The duo gave chase on Naga, and the Equalists were forced to evade some firebending and earthbending attacking. Eventually, two Equalists on motorcycles, stayed behind to face their pursuers. With a well-aimed throw, one Equalist fighter tripped the polar bear dog by tying her legs together with a rope. As the animal's riders where thrown free, the two Equalists prepared for a hand-to-hand combat with the two benders. With their superior agility, the two Equalist fighters were able to immobilize Korra and Mako with chi blocking, but they retreated when Naga untangled herself and came to the rescue of her friends.

Later, at the rally, Amon gave a speech telling the audience about his life story and his motivation to lead the revolution. He blamed the benders of the world to be the cause of every war that has ever been, and showcased his plans for all the benders in the world on the prisoners by demonstrating an ability he claimed the spirits had granted him, the ability to take away a person's bending permanently. Unknown to the attendees at the time, however, Korra and Mako had infiltrated the rally, and just before Amon could remove Bolin's bending, Korra released vast amounts of steam from the water boilers, creating enough of a distraction and cover for Mako to overpower an Equalist fighter, grab Bolin and get out before anyone could react.

Amon's second-in-command, the Lieutenant, defeated the two brothers rather easily with his electrified kali sticks while they were trying to escape, however, Korra arrived and earthbent him into a wall, before he could do more damage. As the trio escaped on Naga, the Equalists wanted to give chase, but Amon gave the order to let them go, stating that the Avatar was the best person to spread word of his power.[3]

The Equalists and their leader had made a profound impression on the Avatar, as Korra had nightmares about being attacked by them after witnessing their skill at the rally. When Korra later aided a special task force led by Councilmen Tarrlok to raid a secret underground training facility in the Dragon Flats district, an Equalist ambushed her when she was inpursuit of two trainees. However, Korra managed to evade his attack and immobilize him by bending a rock straight into his stomach. A second Equalist member was frozen to the wall when Tarrlok came to Korra's rescue. The raid resulted in the defeat and capture of four Equalist members.[4]

At the ensuing press conference, Korra challenged Amon to a duel on Aang Memorial Island at midnight, without the presence of the task force or the chi blockers. However, Amon didn't held up on his end of the deal, and as Korra was heading home, believing he didn't turn up, several Equalists had ambushed her and soon they quickly overpowered and immobilized her. It was only then that Amon emerged from the shadows and explained part of his plan to eradicate all benders. Knocking Korra out cold, but without doing further damage, the Equalists left her in the island's museum.[4]

Amon later demanded the shutdown of the Pro-bending Arena before the sport's championship match, but the United Republic Council did not agree to this. As a result, the Equalists disguised themselves in the arena and waited for their moment. After the match, they sprang into action, electrifying several members of the Metalbending Police Force who were present on security detail, Tenzin, Lin Beifong, and the Fire Ferrets. They then dodged attacks from the Wolfbats and Amon took their bending away. The Equalists then kept the arena secured as Amon gave another warning speech.

As they tried to escape, Korra came after them, intent on fighting Amon. Lin also followed to keep Korra safe. The fight took place on the arena's roof, where the two fought several Equalists. Korra knocked the Lieutenant off the roof, but Amon and the remainder of his cronies escaped.[5]

Goals Edit

The Equalists follow the teachings of Amon, who began spreading his ideas after allegedly receiving a vision from the spirits that the Avatar had failed humanity in its duty to bring balance to the world. The main cause of this imbalance is bending, which is used to bully and oppress the world's non-benders and which has been the cause of "every war". The only way to bring equality back to the world is to remove the abilities of the world's benders, who exploit and marginalize the non-bending majority, and then overthrow the "bending elite" in a wide-ranging social revolution. Accordingly, the spirits granted Amon the ability to permanently remove a person's bending powers.[3] Through eliminating people's bending ability, their aim is to create a society free from bender/non-bender divisions, where no person has an innate advantage over another. Although Amon's final goal remains unclear, he has expressed an eventual plan to export the Equalist revolution beyond the borders of Republic City to the wider world. Assisting Amon in his quest are a multitude of Equalist fighters, including sleeper agents disguised as ordinary civilians and highly-trained chi blockers. Amon himself seems to have a deep disdain for bending, as he has referred to it as an "impurity" that must be cleansed.[5]

Trivia Edit

  • The equalist's symbol seems to be a large red circle inscribed with the Chinese character , meaning "equal" or "peace". This symbol is seen on many Equalist banners throughout the episode.
  • The Equalists were originally named the 'anti-benders', until the name change was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2011.

  • I think this series is turning out to be remarkable because it's giving us multiple perspectives on real issues. In this day and age we're all primed up to fear terrorism like it's a plague wiping people out by the millions. Even though we know it's not true. We know that things like driving cars, drugs or the weather accumulate way more casualties everyday. The power here comes from people being threatened and rendered completely vulnerable. It's terrifying because that's the intent. Make your enemy afraid and they will eventually submit. In reality the threat never matches the terror people feel. Which is why it's effective. The attack on the Pro-Bending arena was a non-lethal assault but the entire Metalbending Police Force was neutralized, spectators held hostage, the arena stage destroyed in a bomb blast and the surrounding Airship force destroyed as well. Everyone is going to be consumed by fear, that it could happen again anywhere, anytime. The fact that there were no actual casualties won't matter. That's the power of terror as a tactic. What comes now is the serious the question. People on either side (benders & non-benders) are bound to be emboldened to win this fight even more. That's when people focus on their own perspective and any possibility of negotiation vanishes. That's when the war starts.

  • You know what's sad? Everyone forgot that equalists were normal people too and that they coild go to probending tournaments too. I forgot that. I feel stupid

  • Shouldn't in the box we have the characters "平等" since it means "equal". Just the character "平" means "flat/level/peaceful/even".

    Just a thought :)

    • actually i'd say the word really just means flat by itself. it's assumed 平等 is what they mean. i don't even think peaceful would make sense unless it was 和平. I mean, 平靜 means quiet, so the character itself doesn't actually mean all that. for the anime to have the one character it makes sense, but in the explanation of this article it's really assuming every definition that this one character has when read with other characters as well

    • for the anime it's fine, since it's a symbol, although for the explanation of the character's meaning it's really just unrelated definitions of words and using those as the character's definition

  • Why doeth people assume the Satos are Equalist. I think its Cabbage Corp. I bet CM wants revenge for his cabbages...

  • Their picture makes them look like a motorcycle club.

  • when the masks go up, sh** goes down.

  • How is Korra gonna stop Amon and his Equalists when she hasn't even learn Airbending.

    • She's progressing. Don't worry.

The thing I'm scared about if that thiis is supposed to be a darker series.... What if bending actually does end? And the series ends on a cliffhanger

  • I wonder what they were loading in those trucks......And the writers purposely showed that scene.....Wonder where the warehouse is located Abd what other things are going on

And I find it interesting that their HQ is out in Yhe open like that. That is,if they are operating their whole operation out of a rented storage room

  • Equalist, Tony Satk called, he said that you should stop stealing the arc-like gloves or else...

  • Amazing how only a couple of equalists can take down the entire metalbending police force

    • they sneaked up on them

    • Still, I thought they were elite. Elites are supposed to be prepared for anything

    • they were prepared for the wrong kind of assault. They weren't expecting a sneak attack. and since they're wearing metal armor simple electric attacks will take them down. I just had a thought. They should wear rubbers suits under their metal armor. that way they can actaully do something about equalists with electric weapons.

    • There were several Equalists in the crowd.

    • Lol that's exactly what they were ready for. They were there just incase Amon and his crew were attacking. I think the answer to Amon is Metal bending cops. The only edge that the equalists had were electric devices vs metal. You can't pressure point through metal.

The thing that gets me is that.... Korra was the only person seeing electricity flow... You would think the guards would notice and out of COMMON SENSE turn around to defend yourself.

  • I was thinkingt whoever Tenzin's ex was, they were playing a significant role in the revolution

Then i learned who it was

  • The scen in which much people in the pro-bending audience reveals to be Equalists is really scary. They, like terrorists in the real world, could be ANYBODY.

  • My theory: The Equalists get their funding from the bending gangs. They use them as a front to justify their actions and support their ideology, and take the money the gangs extort from others. He publically humiliated the gangs to distance himself from them. Like the smart, manipulative bastard Amon is.

Anyone who says the Satos are in league with the Equalists is retarded. That dead horse has been beaten way too much.

    • That's an interesting theory but it does not seem hinted that he has any association with the bending gangs other than maybe his own followers being bullied and extorted by them.

  • The Equalists, it seems, have some serious cash, now that we know they can afford electric gloves and an airship. I wonder where they get it from?

...and NO I don't think the Satos are behind it, so don't even think about mentioning them.

    by Equalist
    • They could have sources from something like the Avatar version of the black market or other underground sources.

    • Cabbage corp? (the revenge of the cabbage man)

Talking seriously, certainly this is a very important question, definitely somebody involved on the tech industries is helping the equalist.

    • maybe the same guy sponsering the fire ferrets it would be a good twist maybe asami hit mako on purpose, maybe a spy for the equalist and maybe using mako to get closer and keep an eye on korra

  • Shouldn't this page be located in the Organizations tab?

    by Tchuron
  • I have to say, the Equalists are big fans of lightning. The way they used electric gloves to subdue Chief Bei Fong and Tenzin and the announcer. Even Amon's second-in-command uses electrifed kali sticks. Maybe because it can easily subdue an opponent and their bending. similar to chi-blocking.

  • It's amazing how only one airship was able to own the entire metalbender force's vehicles

    • But still, shooting electricity at hydrogen-filled airships and igniting even one spark of gas can cause a whole ship to burn in seconds. Beifong and her crew had no idea that Amon's followers had the power to generate artificial lightning and therefore, they couldn't adequately prepare for it (because a certain Avatar neglected to mention that she fought an Equalist with freaking lightning rods...)

    • Well they didn't expect the equalist to have an airship

    • They should've been prepared for anything that the enemy should have.

    • They did not know about the lightning attacks though korra should have said something.

    • Waite, how do you shoot lightning like in a beam-like way? Doesnt it have to touch something, like the sticks and the floves?

    • @Monkeyfeathers,

Hindenburg called, they want their smoldering, blimp inferno back.

  • I'm not exactly against nor do I hate the Equalist. When benders have the power to oppress nonbenders and burn your face off, it's unsurprising to see nonbenders like Amon and the Equalist rise up in retaliation and use chi-blocking and technology in their cause. The sad thing is for the Avatar to pick only one side (the benders) when in fact he is supposed to represent or protect all people, benders and nonbenders. The problem of the past seasons was between the four nations and obviously the Avatar can't be for only one nation. The problem of this season is between benders and nonbenders, and as the upholder of peace and balance, the Avatar can't be for only one side. With Korra's personality, it's unsurpising for her to not see this and be mostly for benders. Plus, she participates in a sport called pro-bending, an obvious name for a sport that only promotes bending. Obviously she is going to be for probending and benders. It's unsurprising for Korra not to be able to airbend at this point. Airbenders like Aang and the monks had great wisdom and were never really for only one side. Airbenders were thoughtful and conscientious people, which is evident in Tenzin but not evident in Korra at all.

    • I feel the same way. So far the only mandate anyone has for fighting Amon is his Terrorist-like tactics. But other than that his cause doesn't seem all that unjust (other than the fact that bending is freaking amazing).

My guess is that as the show goes on we'll discover that Amon has some sort of ulterior motive for his revolution. And then the Avatar has to stop him and then provide true equality for benders and non-benders

    • i'd say her naivety is a core part of the story like aang's journey in the first one. the legend of korra is another bildungsroman, a coming of age story of how she faces the demands society has put on her. i agree that the equalists have a legitimate cause, but the wrong way tackle it.

    • I complement that you aren't the only person to come to that conclusion... Good Job (Not being sarcastic)

  • I think guns and such are not created because it would give the equalists too much of a advantage. Since you have to move to bend it takes more time and energy to bend than it takes to pull the trigger a gun. The equalists would win and I don't think the Producers want that. The hero must win.

    • Also in a world where people have powers like bending weapons technology would advance differently because why develop a weapon like guns when bending has such great destructive potential.

  • Am I the only one who thought that the Equalists in the audience looked like Al Quaeda terrorists?

    by Soso694
    • Yeah when Amon was giving his speech it reminded me of how Osama Bin laden, and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood give speeches about how they should kill the non believers whereas in Avatar Amon wants to get rid of the benders. It was definently an interesting thing when Amon blew up the arena that totally reminded me of terrorists. Normally Amon's casue would be just, but in a way due to the tactics that he uses he really is no better then the benders becasue Amon wants to opress them, but I'm willing to bet that Amon's revolution is also about power since Amon wants to take over the world kinda like like Ozai except Amon doesn't have the military resources to do it yet.

    • Nope. I thought that too.

    • That is an interesting perspective casting the equalists as Al Quaeda. But try to remember terrorists are often a reaction from an action. Like after Bin Laden helped repel the Soviet Union he saw the West, the same that trained and funded him and his soldiers, as enemies when they decided to invade and meddle in the Middel East.

And like the United States, the United Republic government probably aren't all saints either.

    • No way, the Equalists seem more like China when it was dealing with the 'threat' of Communism in the 1930's.
