Dark Into Light is a game hosted by Nick.com, based on the television series The Legend of Korra. The player runs through scenery from the show as either Korra or Bolin, bending at or jumping over enemies and obstacles in the way. It can be used to unlock exclusive images from Book Two: Spirits.

Objective

Play as Korra or Bolin and beat as many missions and stages as possible to restore balance and unlock new abilities.

Controls

  • Up arrow or W — Jump
  • Left arrow or A — Move left
  • Right arrow or D — Move right
  • Clicking near Korra — Waterbend
  • Clicking far away — Firebend
  • Clicking and holding for two seconds — Earthbend
  • Double tapping arrow keys or A/D — Dash past enemies by airbending
  • Jump against the wall and press in the opposite direction — Wall jump (unlocked at level four)
  • Up arrow or W twice — Double jump (unlocked at level seven)
  • Up arrow or W twice and left/right arrow or A/D — Air dash (unlocked at level ten)
  • Defeat multiple enemies in succession without getting hit to fill the energy bar underneath Korra's health bar — Avatar State (unlocked at level twelve)

Gameplay

The game is played through different stages. Upon starting the game, the player will be presented with four menus, one for controls, one for unlocking codes, one for exclusive content and one for playing the game. This link will lead a player to the menu for stages, where there are several stages they can choose from each with numerous missions in them. The default mission for the stage is opened with a brief conversation between Korra and another character from the series. There are four levels set in the South Pole, one in Republic City, two in the Fire Nation (set in the same location), two in the Eastern Air Temple, and one in Ba Sing Se.

Once the player completes a certain amount of missions, Korra will level up. At higher levels, she will learn new moves including wall jump at level four, double jump at level seven, air dash at level ten, and Avatar State at level twelve.

Tutorial

This stage begins with a conversation between Korra and Tenzin that goes as follows:

Tenzin: Korra! Clearly you need more training to grasp the depths of your spiritual connections.

Korra: I'm the Avatar! And I have complete control over my powers. I'll prove it!

Tenzin instructs Korra through the stage, which is played in the Southern Water Tribe. He tells the player the controls, and the player works through the stage using bending to destroy dummies and clear passageways. Upon making the way through the course, the player will reach a fountain with the waterbending symbol above it. Upon passing this, the player is healed. If the player heads up and to the left they will find a secret passageway with coins in it, or if they continue right they will eventually complete this stage.

The tutorial also has a secret mission that is unlocked with a code from the trivia game to find Tenzin in fifty seconds in order to get a reward of one hundred energy orbs. Tenzin is in the special location with the other energy orbs.

Missions

In general, each stage of the game other than the tutorial consists of a series of standard missions that are achieved through similar means, but consist of slightly altered parameters. The following missions are a template that describes the objectives of the stages following the tutorial stage:

Complete this stage

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the preceding stage and is completed by simply reaching the Water Tribe emblem on the flag at the end of the stage.

Complete this stage in '#:##'

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the first mission of any given stage and requires the stage to be completed within the given time limit. Each stage has more than one mission of this manner, with each requiring the level to be completed in a slightly quicker time.

A counter appears at the bottom right of the screen, and orange text counts down the time left to complete the stage.

Defeat 'X' enemies

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the first mission of any given stage and is completed by defeating the given number of dark spirits.

A counter appears at the bottom right of the screen, and purple text counts down the number of enemies the player has defeated. Rather than stopping at the Water Tribe emblem, the mission is finished when the counter reaches zero.

Collect 'X' energy orbs in this stage

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the first mission in any given stage and is completed by collecting the given number of energy orbs.

A counter appears at the bottom right of the screen, and blue text counts down the number of energy orbs the player has yet to collect. Rather than stopping at the goal post, the mission is finished when the counter reaches zero.

Defeat 'X' enemies in this stage in '#:##'

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the first mission in any given stage and is completed by defeating the given number of Dark spirits with the given time limit.

Two counters appear at the bottom right of the screen, one for the number of enemies yet to be defeated and one for the timer. Rather than stopping at the goal post, the mission is finished when the counter reaches zero.

Collect 'X' energy orbs in this stage in '#:##'

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the first mission in any given stage and is completed by collecting the given number of energy orbs with the given time limit.

Two counters appear at the bottom right of the screen, one for the number of energy orbs yet to be collected and one for the timer. Rather than stopping at the goal post, the mission is finished when the energy counter reaches zero.

Defeat 'X' enemies in this stage taking no damage

This mission is unlocked upon clearing the first mission in any given stage and is completed by defeating the given number of Dark spirits without taking damage.

A counter appears at the bottom right of the screen, and purple text counts down the number of enemies the player has defeated. Rather than stopping at the Water Tribe emblem, the mission is finished when the counter reaches zero.

Find the stuffed animal and earn one hundred energy orbs

This mission is unlocked upon entering the correct code in the Code Input section of the main menu. There is a code corresponding to each stage that unlocks this mission. The code is obtained after successfully completing the trivia game, which consists of ten quiz questions from the show; the code for any stage can be seen on the trivia game page. The stuffed animal is found in a certain hidden location in the level and will appear in the same location every time this mission is attempted. The reward of one hundred energy orbs is only received upon completing the mission for the first time.

Rebel Spirits

This stage is unlocked upon clearing the tutorial and takes place in the Southern Water Tribe. Before the stage begins, Korra and Unalaq have a brief conversation, wherein Unalaq states that he will be taking the Korra to one of the most remote places in the world; the South Pole. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage
  • Complete this stage in 1:30
  • Defeat twenty enemies in this stage
  • Collect forty energy orbs in this stage
  • Complete this stage in 1:20
  • Defeat twenty enemies in this stage in 3:00
  • Collect sixty energy orbs in this stage in 2:30
  • Complete this stage in 1:00
  • Defeat twenty-five enemies in this stage in 3:00
  • Collect ninety-nine energy orbs in this stage
  • Collect ninety-nine energy orbs in this stage in 2:30
  • Defeat thirteen enemies in this stage, taking no damage
  • Find the stuffed Appa and earn one hundred energy orbs (unlocked from completing the first quiz)

The stuffed Appa can be found at the top of the tree located just to the right of the second ice wall.

The Southern Lights

This stage is unlocked upon clearing the Rebel Spirits level and again takes place in the Southern Water Tribe. Before the stage begins, Korra and Unalaq discuss Korra's role as the bridge between the spirits and the physical world, with which Unalaq agrees. He hurries her to travel to the spirit portal. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage
  • Complete this stage in 2:20
  • Defeat seventeen enemies in this stage
  • Collect fifty energy orbs
  • Complete this stage in 2:00
  • Defeat seventeen enemies in this stage in 4:30
  • Collect seventy-five energy orbs in 3:50
  • Complete this stage in 1:30
  • Defeat twenty-one enemies in this stage in 4:30
  • Collect 125 energy orbs in this stage
  • Collect 125 energy orbs in this stage in 3:50
  • Defeat eleven enemies in this stage, taking no damage
  • Find the stuffed Appa and earn one hundred energy orbs (unlocked from completing the second quiz)

The stuffed Appa can be found just after the first fountain by an ice-spiked tree branch.

Civil Wars

This stage is unlocked upon clearing The Southern Lights and takes place in the Southern Water Tribe prison. Before the stage begins, Korra tells Mako that she cannot believe that she trusted Unalaq and that she is busting her father and the rebels out of jail. Mako says she cannot go back if she does this, but he agrees to help. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage

  • Collect forty energy orbs
  • Complete this stage in 1:50
  • Collect sixty energy orbs in this stage in 3:20
  • Complete this stage in 1:20
  • Collect ninety-nine energy orbs in this stage

  • Find the stuffed Poki and earn one hundred energy orbs (unlocked from completing the third quiz)

There are no enemies in this stage, and the only obstacles to avoid are spikes. The stuffed Poki can be found behind the second horizontal spiked piston.

The Adventures of Nuktuk

This stage is unlocked upon clearing Civil Wars and takes place in the set for The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South. In this stage, the player plays as Bolin in his Nuktuk costume. The only moves the player has as Bolin is running, jumping, and wall jump. Before the stage begins, Varrick tells Bolin no one will root for North after they see their production. Bolin says he's a movers superstar, and that Nuktuk is a man of action with a heart of gold. Unlike other stages, the missions in this stage are focused on successfully crossing the set and remaining on the screen, as the focus shifts through the level. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage, EASY
  • Complete this stage, MEDIUM
  • Complete this stage, HARD
  • Complete this stage, taking no damage
  • Collect 150 energy orbs in this stage, EASY
  • Collect 175 energy orbs in this stage, MEDIUM
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage, HARD
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage, taking no damage (unlocked from completing the fifth quiz)

There are no enemies in this stage, and the only obstacles to avoid are movie props.

Beginnings Part 1

This stage is unlocked upon clearing The Adventures of Nuktuk and takes place in the Spirit Wilds. Before the stage begins, Korra finds the place to be unreal, and wonders if those are visions of Wan's life, showing how he became the first Avatar. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage

  • Defeat 26 enemies in this stage
  • Collect 80 energy orbs in this stage
  • Complete this stage in 1:50
  • Defeat 26 enemies in this stage, in 4:00
  • Collect 120 energy orbs in this stage, in 3:20

  • Defeat 32 enemies in this stage, in 4:00
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage, in 3:20
  • Defeat 16 enemies in this stage, taking no damage
  • Defeat 16 enemies using melee attacks, in 2:00 (unlocked from completing the sixth quiz)

Beginnings Part 2

This stage is unlocked upon clearing Beginnings Part 1 and takes place in the Spirit Wilds. Before the stage begins, Korra says she sees lion turtles and the origin of the bending arts in her vision. The missions consist of:

  • Collect 160 energy orbs in this stage

A New Spiritual Age

This stage is unlocked upon clearing Beginnings Part 1 and takes place in the Spirit World. Before the stage begins, Korra says that Harmonic Convergence has nearly arrived, and she needs to go to the Spirit World. Tenzin responds that there is a lot spiritual energy where they are, but it feels strange. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage
  • Complete this stage in 2:00
  • Defeat 22 enemies in this stage
  • Collect 80 energy orbs in this stage
  • Defeat 22 enemies in this stage, in 4:00
  • Collect 120 energy orbs in this stage, in 3:20
  • Complete this stage in 1:20
  • Defeat 27 enemies in this stage, in 4:00
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage, in 3:20
  • Defeat 14 enemies in this stage, taking no damage
  • Find the stuffed Poki and collect 200 energy orbs (unlocked from completing the eighth quiz)

The stuffed Poki is located in the inferior part of a platform about half-way through the stage and can only be collected by jumping toward it. Is is harder to see than previous levels because it is darkened, blending in more with the stage, but the eyes still pop out.

The Guide

This stage is unlocked upon clearing A New Spiritual Age and takes place in the Eastern Air Temple. Before the stage begins, Korra tells the spirits not to stand in her way as she looks for the portals, and Jinora warns her that her energy is upsetting them. The missions consist of:

  • Complete this stage
  • Complete this stage in 2:30
  • Defeat 32 enemies in this stage
  • Collect 80 energy orbs in this stage
  • Complete this stage in 2:10
  • Defeat 32 enemies in this stage, in 5:00
  • Collect 120 energy orbs in this stage, in 4:10
  • Complete this stage in 1:40
  • Defeat 40 enemies in this stage, in 5:00
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage
  • Collect 200 energy orbs in this stage, in 4:10
  • Defeat 20 enemies in this stage, taking no damage
  • Defeat the lizard Spirit (unlocked from completing the ninth quiz)

To defeat the lizard spirit, the player must draw the lizard's attention and time their jump to avoid its attack. The lizard can only be damaged for a brief interval after it misses an attack and hits its head against a wall. The player can tell that the lizard can be damaged by looking at the color of its glow. If it glows blue, it can be damaged.

Light in the Dark

This stage is unlocked upon clearing The Guide and takes place in the Spirit World. Before the stage begins, Unalaq tells Korra she is to late, as Harmonic Convergence is upon them, that nothing can stop him. Korra tells him to top talking and start fighting. The missions consist of:

  • Stop the Dark Avatar
  • Stop the Dark Avatar in 2:00

The stage is very straightforward, consisting only of a fight with Unalaq. During the fight, Unalaq uses many ranged ice attacks and blocks all of Korra's ranged attacks. Unalaq can also summon dark spirits to help him. Upon defeating him, an excerpt of "Darkness Falls" showing Unalaq extracting and destroying Raava, growing to gigantic proportions, and leaving through the spirit lights is shown. The game tells that the era of the Avatar is not over yet, and that Korra can still connect to the cosmos.

Trivia

  • The stages Rebel Spirit and The Southern Lights are based on "The Southern Lights".
  • In the advanced ability tab, the levels at which double jump and air dash are unlocked are switched.
  • Upon the release of the ninth stage, it appears that its title was swapped with the eighth stage's title.
  • When new stages were released as Book Two aired, some dots denoting stages changed their positions. Some of the marked locations these marked included the Northern Water Tribe and Si Wong Desert.
  • Some missions contain bugs, making them unachievable. For example, there are not 200 orbs to collect in "The Guide".
