The Crystal Catacombs are a huge chamber made of rock and crystal located deep beneath the King's palace. The crystal catacombs are a part of old Ba Sing Se. Before Ba Sing Se was the huge metropolis that it is today, it was a small underground city carved by Earthbenders out of the rocks. As the Earthbenders excavated further, they discovered the beautiful glowing crystals and began to mine them. These glowing crystals are used as a common Earth Kingdom light source. Earthbenders can not only move them, but apparently make them grow. They may be a variety of Jennomite (creeping crystal), which also has an ability to grow. Eventually, the city expanded above ground, leaving the crystal catacombs empty. Although no one lives there today, the ancient underground city still stands.

The Crystal Catacombs were the site of the battle that completed the Coup of Ba Sing Se. Aang, along with Katara, fought Azula and Zuko. Aang lost the battle when he was shot by Azula's lightning. The battle caused some damage to the Catacombs.
