Courtenay was raised in San Francisco by her English mother and Australian father. She attended college at the University of Redlands and San Francisco State, majoring in Broadcast Communications with a minor in theater. She was married to David Taylor, former footballer and the current assistant manager of Caersws F.C.
After spending a season in Los Angeles working on HBO's Tales From The Crypt as a production assistant, Courtenay returned to San Francisco to attend the American Conservatory Theater, and studied voice acting with The Voice Factory's Taylor Korobow. She was a founding instructor at Gorilla Sports, a popular boxing/spinning/yoga gym that branched out to Manhattan Beach and Chicago.
In 1998, Courtenay moved back to Los Angeles and began working steadily in voice-overs, particularly for video games. Recently she has crossed over into on-camera work with roles on prime time TV and in feature films.
