The Boiling Rock, Part 1

Voiced By Ezekial Rollins

Chit Sang is a former prisoner aboard the Boiling Rock who claims that he was wrongly accused of the crime he committed and maintains his innocence. He is rebellious (has displayed "unruly behavior" according to a prison guard) and much-abused by the prison guards. Many see Chit Sang as the unofficial prison leader. If he wants them to jump, they jump. Chit Sang has tried every escape plan he could think of, but none has worked. Since his last attempt, he's just been biding his time and waiting for a perfect escape opportunity to come. During the course of both episodes of "The Boiling Rock", he escaped from prison and joins the Avatar's group. He is a capable Firebender, as evidenced when he parried a guard at the Boiling Rock and is skilled in starting prison riots (remarkably so because this skill only consists of him saying "Hey! Riot!" while bouncing another inmate in the air over his head).

[edit] History

Chit Sang first appears when Sokka and Zuko, disguised as guards, are called to help resolve a skirmish in the Boiling Rock's yard. Chit Sang is being harassed by a higher-ranking guard for not bowing when he walked by. While Chit Sang attempts to peacefully go back to his cell, the guard deliberately provokes a response by attacking him with a Fire Whip, forcing him to defend himself. He is taken to the Cooler for breaking the prison rules on Firebending. While in the Cooler, Chit Sang is visited by The Warden, who tells him that he heard he'd tried to use Firebending to escape (an exaggeration made up by the same guard who had been antagonizing Chit Sang).

Later on, Chit Sang overhears Sokka, Zuko and Suki hatching an escape attempt. He demands to get in on it, threatening to tell the guards. Sokka agrees, and the four of them begin planning. The plan would involve unbolting one of the Coolers, and using it as a boat to get across the boiling lake. Chit Sang and Zuko decide to stage a fight with Firebending, so Zuko can get inside the Cooler.

When the plan comes together, Chit Sang shows up at the cooler with his girlfriend and best friend. Sokka, Suki and Zuko decide to stay behind, on the off chance that an approaching gondola might have Sokka's father on it. Chit Sang and his companions go on. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side. Frustrated by the heat and slow current, the former prisoner pulls off a piece of the metal siding, intending to use it as a paddle. When he sticks the paddle in the water, some of the superheated lake water splashes his hand, causing him to cry out in pain. This alerts the Warden to his escape attempt, and he and his friends are caught and re-imprisoned.

Knowing that Chit Sang was not smart enough to come up with this plan on his own, the Warden has him interrogated to find out who did. After torture by being suspended upside down until the blood rushes to his head, Chit Sang reveals that it was a man disguised as a guard that came up with the plan. When the Warden lines up several guards, Chit Sang identifies the guard who earlier harassed him, proving his earlier claim under torture that he wasn't a snitch and getting revenge at the same time.

He is later released along with all the other inmates when Sokka, Suki and Hakoda attempt to start a prison riot as a diversion. After Hakoda's efforts to start a fight fail due to inmates' broken spirits, Chit Sang succeeds by picking up a smaller prisoner and yelling "Hey! Riot!". Hakoda notes this as impressive.

Chit Sang joins the other escapees to the gondola, where he helps re-capture the Warden after he breaks his bonds, and they escape on Azula's Airship. He joins the Avatar's group at the Western Air Temple.

When The Western Air Temple was attacked by Azula and her fleet, Chit Sang escaped with Hakoda, Teo, The Duke and Haru on the captured Airship.

Chit Sang's ultimate fate after the War's end is unknown. It is possible that he was finally pardoned for his previous crimes.

It is unknown what happened to his girlfriend and mate.

[edit] Trivia

  • His name sounds similar to a Chinese Cantonese phrase meaning "make noise" or anything dealing with noises from the mouth like speaking, yelling, talking, etc.
  • Chit Sang is the second adult member of Team Avatar. The first was Hakoda.
