Ty Lee, the first known master of chi blocking.
RenatablsAdded by Renatabls

Chi blocking is a special ability that Ty Lee, and later the Equalists, utilize in combat against their enemies. When they block someone's chi, it renders their victim's muscles useless and disables their bending abilities. This earned Katara's fear and spite after Ty Lee blocked her chi in Omashu.[1]

History Edit

Ty Lee was the first to demonstrate the use of Chi Blocking in combat. Among other feats, she was seen disabling Katara's waterbending with a series of jabs in her arms and back.[1] When fighting Team Avatar, she rendered Sokka's muscles useless.[2] Ty Lee made good use of it during a fight when she took down the entire Terra Team with some cover from Mai.[3]

The concept of chi blocking was used by Team Avatar to destroy the Fire Nation drill by striking its pressure points, causing the drill to collapse upon itself.[3] Ty Lee also defeated at least one of the Kyoshi Warriors who were protecting Appa with this ability.[4] Disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior, Ty Lee once again paralyzed Katara, catching her by surprise.[5] She also immobilized Sokka and Toph when Azula threatened the Earth King at flame point, forcing them to surrender.[6]

The technique was used by Ty Lee when she was cornered by several boys at Chan's party on Ember Island.[7] She attempted several times to use it on Suki during the Escape from the Boiling Rock, but Suki was on guard against it due to her past experience. Later, in the escape's aftermath, Ty Lee used it to paralyze Azula and temporarily block her bending when she was about to strike down Mai.[8]

Ty Lee made friends with and joined the Kyoshi Warriors after giving them chi blocking lessons in prison. This probably means the Kyoshi Warriors are capable of utilizing the technique.[9]

Seventy years later, members of the Equalists utilize chi blocking to combat benders.[10]

Method Edit

Chi blocking is utilized by hitting pressure points with "quick jabs" and "punches", and must be done rapidly, often giving little time for the recipient to react. Ty Lee hits these pressure points with relatively light jabs using her fingers and knuckles. Apparently, even people wearing strong, but not necessarily heavy, armor are not spared from its effects. It seems she can use any of her fingers, such as when she disabled Katara with her thumb.[5] Ty Lee can also use her feet to disable others' chi flow with a swing of her foot. She used this method to fend off the boys who cornered her in Chan's house.[7] Although a very useful method of fighting, chi blocking is most effective against an opponent not expecting such a light blow to be so devastating. It is less effective against someone who either knows chi blocking or who has battled a chi blocker in the past. An example of this was seen when Katara successfully dodged Ty Lee's attempts to block her chi after having already faced Ty Lee in an earlier battle.[1][2] Additionally, chi blocking can not work against an opponent wearing specialized armor like that of the Metalbending Police Force.[11]

Effects Edit

Katara paralyzed.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

Chi blocking blocks the victim's chi, reduces their muscular strength, and disables one's bending abilities; this would be particularly devastating for people who rely solely on their bending. Ty Lee had shown the ability to be able to control the damage she did: when she first attacked Katara, she was still able to move, though not able to bend. When attacking the Terra Team, they could barely move, were powerless, and felt pain afterwards; Katara was unable to heal them, stating that their chi was completely blocked.[3] Later, Ty Lee struck down Katara who was paralyzed from head to toe and fell to the ground motionless. It is possible that Ty Lee can use her chi blocking ability to kill or seriously injure an opponent.[5]

Variation Edit

An accidental form of chi blocking was used twice against Combustion Man. On two occasions, his third eye was hit (once by a pellet resulting from Toph's attack and once by Sokka's boomerang, deliberately aimed at him), causing him to "misfire".[12] On the second occasion, the explosion was strong enough to demolish a section of the Western Air Temple, which led to his demise.[13]

Connections Edit

  • Chi blocking is likely inspired by the martial arts technique dian xue or dim mak, which purports to kill or maim by disrupting the body's flow of internal energy.
  • Qigong (sometimes spelled Chi Gong) uses similar techniques and pressure points to help others' chi flow more easily and is considered a standard medical technique for hospitals in China.
  • While at the San Diego Comic-Con 2011, Bryan Konietzko stated that chi blocking was not an art unique to Ty Lee, rather that it was ancient and "cloaked in secrets".

Equalists Edit

Main article: Equalists

The Equalists, led by Amon, is an organization against the art of bending, and by extension, against benders themselves. To effectively combat benders, the Equalists utilize chi blocking as a means to counteract bending.

  • The fact that Chi Blocking is not unique to Ty Lee but rather an ancient form cloaked in secrets could mean something. Who taught Ty Lee this art. Though it may sound silly, what if another spirit came from the spirit world taught her or somebody else that art. Did that same spirit teach Amon or did the Kyoshi Warriors go evil?

  • Can you permanently block someone's chi. Keeping that person from bending forever?

    • I'm pretty sure that's how Amon does it. Although from Chinese storybooks if your path for chi gets destroyed it is possible to drill out or ultilise another path (like blood vessels if you toe gets cut off)

  • Ty Lee would be ashamed how her teaching of Chi Blocking would result in the Legend of Korra

  • chi blocking vs blood bending

Oh I know blood pro bending

  • Does chi blocking actually exist in real life? or is it just a fantasy martial art for the sake of keeping it a kids show?

    • It was said that Chi isn't real or is not present in our body in real life. So probably chi blocking is not real, because there's no chi to block:))

    • Actually yes. In ancit china marshal artist in monk temples found out part of the human body That will completely stop working when blood is slowed or comletely stoped. Its possible to do this by striking a area hard enoghe. This technic was called chi blocking mainly because in ancit china didnt really know the whole body thing till european countries started coming in for trade. You know when your arm or leg falls asleep. its like that but last longer.

    • Chi blocking is related to the chinese martial art: Wing Chun, And it would be fitting for Ty Lee to know how to chi block because a woman invented Wing chun

                                                                                                  -iMadness

    • Hmm~ no ones knows really, although I've seen a discovery episode on Chi where a man can put out candles from a distance with his palm. (It's kind of like Ninjas in Japan, they may exist but not as powerful as in the storybooks) But Chi blocking is tightly related to most Chinese martial art related stories so I'd like to think it exists?

  • "rather that it was ancient and "cloaked in secrets". Interesting intersting...So ninja like people used chi blocking...

  • I am bit disappointed by the Chi-Blockers in the show. I would have expected people with as much skill as Ty Lee. You clearly tell that they dont have as much skill as Ty Lee, because she was able to completely Paralyze her opponents, while the chi blockers have shown no such skill. Sure they can block chi, but not Paralyze. Ty lee could also completely block Chi with just one hit. In the first time we see Ty Lee fight, in the episode where the Gaang returns to Omashu, you can clearly see Ty Lee hit just ONE part of Kataras arm, and that arm would no longer be able to bend. (Ty Lee had hit a spot right in front of Kataras shoulder on both arms that completely blocked her chi in both arms) Chi blockers have to throw a couple of punches to block someones chi, while Ty Lee just delivered a quick, but strong poke with her fingers. Ty Lee also had much more knowledge of the body because she attacked from all over, while the chi blockers are only seen to attack the sides of the body. Bit, I guess it's OK (: The show would be more suspenseful if the chi blockers were a bunch of people just like Ty Lee. ^^

    • Keep in mind, bending teachers in Korra's time period became more aware of chi-blocking techniques and how to combat them since Avatar: The Last Airbender because of the rise of the Equalist threat.

    • Also, Ty Lee wasn't the only chi-clocker in the Avatar world, just the only one we saw.

    • There is also an important part with the plot within Legend of Korra: Benders forgot about the spiritual and philosophical ways of bending arts and focus solely on fighting, meaning that there is a large knowledge base that it's been forgotten, making them weaker and violent. The same principle can be applied to chi blockers: They are focusing their efforts on effectiveness in combat against those now lesser skilled benders and do their training in clandestine facilities to avoid detection, loosing some crucial knowledge in the process and off course requiring less skills to defeat modern benders.

    • this is probably because they're not really trying to paralyze them. just disable their bending. but they have paralyzed before.

    • they skill displayed in this show fighting wise is kind of disappointing in my opinion. yea its cool and fast paced but they dont seem to have it really down as the first generation. for example i was thinking why couldnt they just sink the chi blockers feet into the ground or freeze them in combat so they couldnt move. but instead they just throw projectile things and make walls of fire or earth.

    • Yes, but the way these chi-blockers hit Korra and Mako are awesome. Looks like real blows from martial art masters.

  • how do you chi block???????

    • Well it is said that you need to hit the person's pressure points. But chi blocking is not really practiced in the real world because Chi doesn't exist in the human body. But there are some techniques the same as chi blocking, like dim mak (as seen at the trivia).

  • I think this is cool, as in my kung fu style. Shaolin do, we also use pressure points to disable muscles use's. :)

    • i do Baguazhang but i have also studied some pressure points

    • i never learned to attack a persons pressure points however i did learn to defend to an extent. Mostly i just hardened my muscles or dodged at the last second. tho if it was a rather inexperienced oponent i woulda just grabbed their hands put my foot on their chest and puled till i dislocated their shoulders. even tho when i tried that on a more experienced oponent i kinda got my arse kicked

  • This base on pressure points.

  • i think amon had trained under ty lee and she told him how to take someones bending away forever but he thought if he take the firelords bending he would become the firelord but some firebender thought his father was planing it and killed his parents\

  • Or it could possibly be one of tenzen's brothers.

  • I think that Amon is Ty lee's son or was possibly someone who trained with her.

  • aang used his special chi blocking to take ozais bending like Amon can now do

    • Its called Energy Bending

    • aang doesnt chi block he energybends

    • False, Amon can't take away bending permanently and Aang used energybending, not chi blocking. This is only the powere of an Avatar and it seems Amon can't even bend. Amon used the power of anxiety which blocks the power to bend. Amon touched a certain area in the head where anxiousness is caused and as mentioned in the series, could stop one from bending. This is permanent only if undone.

    • IrohShouldBeFirelord, where does it state that ONLY the avatar can energy bend? In the era before the avatar, people bent the energy inside themselves. Thats the era before the avatar.. so anyone can energy bend

    • Alright, maybe not an Avatar but the power of a bender.

    • Aside from not being a bender, Amon used a different stance.

    • Among doesn't energy bend people he uses fear

    • When Sokka gets chi blocked by Ty Lee in both arms and left leg, he makes her punch his skull*

    Ty Lee:*Punches skull* Ah! Ugh!

    Sokka: Nice try, but no.

  • Maybe Amon performed permanent chi blocking

  • Has anyone seen this? http://korranation.tumblr.com/post/20811370491/korra-and-mako-are-rendered-powerless-against-two

    • thank you for posting! I wrote the comment below about dispruption and yet again the show is staying consistent to the small details! And to answer your question, I've seen it now!

  • Kyusho jitsu is one of several arts that involve Chi disruption. The idea behind Ty Lee's fighting style is more of a disruption then a technical "blocking" of Chi. Her precision allows her to shoot massive amounts of Chi on specific meridians up to the brain. Notice how her knock out blows usually involve a strike on the inside of the arms, as those meridians run up the body. The meridians on the outside of the arms run down the body, hence why when she struck Azula she lost her bending but was not "stunned" by the strike.(Psychologically stunned I'm sure but not physically) I am thrilled to see that the creators/ writers put the effort into researching such subtle but very important details.

  • anyone here know Naruto. Ty Lee is the Neji Hyuga of Avatar.

  • Maybe Korra will learn something about Chi-blocking. then he will be the most powerful Avatar in the eternity of avatars.
