The Canyon Guide guides people across the massive canyon known as the Great Divide located in the Earth Kingdom. He has extensive knowledge of the creatures, geography, and climate of the canyon and its surroundings. The Canyon Guide is a pleasant person who seems to enjoy his job.
The Canyon Guide does not do well with intense conflict between people and shows somewhat paranoic speechs during the attacks of the Canyon Crawlers, though it would appear he is able to handle natural, earth-based crises with little difficulty. In calmer moments, the Canyon Guide is both wise and perceptive, and his keen observations are able to help others understand the nature of their problems and eventually how to solve them.
[edit] History
On one trip the Guide had to lead two feuding tribes and the Avatar through the canyon. The Canyon Guide arrives, and both tribes get into an argument over who gets to go first. The Zhangs say that they should because they have sick people, and the Gan Jins say that they should because they have old people. Aang reaches a compromise and suggests that Appa carry their sick and elderly across, while the two tribes travel together across the canyon. The Canyon Guide warns them not to take any food into the canyon, as it will attract dangerous predators. After he has broken a rock shelf so that potential Fire Nation soldiers cannot follow them, a Canyon Crawler attacks. Aang and his friends fend it off, but the Guide's arms are broken, which means he can't Earthbend and there is no going back.
He is later seeing, along with Aang, the campsites of both tribes, commenting as they are alone due to their neutral position. Aang says that he wants to help those people, but getting out of the canyon is more important. The Guide reveals his wise nature by replying he sometimes thinks both problems are related.
They reach the end of the canyon, where the tribes argue some more and prepare to fight and end the feud once and for all. Aang becomes angry and uses Airbending to stop the fight, but in the process reveals the food from both tribes and attracts many Canyon Crawlers. By working together and throwing bags over the Crawlers' heads while the Crawlers are distracted with food, everyone is able to ride them up the wall and out of the canyon. After they get out, the Canyon Guide quits his job as a guide and leaves with the two tribes.
