Book One: Water () is the title of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The title refers to the Avatar Cycle: water, earth, fire, and air. The story of Aang learning waterbending is primarily focused on during this season, together with Team Avatar's journey to the North Pole.

The season began airing on February 21, 2005, with "The Boy in the Iceberg", and ended at twenty episodes on December 2 of that year, with "The Siege of the North, Part 1" and "The Siege of the North, Part 2" each airing on that date. It was followed by Book Two: Earth.

"After a lapse of 100 years, the Avatar-spiritual master of the elements-has returned. And just in the nick of time. The Four Nations (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air) have become unbalanced. Summary:
Sokka and Katara, two teenage siblings living in the South Pole, discover Aang and his pet flying bison, Appa, trapped in an iceberg. After Katara frees him, she discovers that he is an airbender and the siblings take him to their home village in the Southern Water Tribe. Meanwhile, his unfreezing attracts the attention of the Fire Nation's Zuko intent on capturing him.

Summary:

Summary:
Traveling by foot, Team Avatar accidentally stumbles into a Fire Nation camp. The soldiers immediately surround them, though the team is saved by Jet and his Freedom Fighters and invited back to their treetop hideout. There, the team learns about the orphans living in the woods and fighting the Fire Nation soldiers who dare to set foot in the forest.

While crossing a canyon on foot, Aang has to mediate between two tribes, the Zhangs, and the Gan Jins, who have been feuding for almost one hundred years. Summary:
Sokka, Katara, and Yue follow Zuko to save Aang. In the Spirit World, Aang learns the identities of the Moon and Ocean spirits and that they are in danger. As Aang returns to the real world, he is saved by Katara. Meanwhile, Zhao succeeds in capturing the Moon Spirit, the source of all waterbending. Aang enters the Avatar State to destroy the siege, Zuko defeats Zhao, and Yue gives her life back to the Moon Spirit to save the Water Tribe.

The episodes were first released on five DVDs, with four episodes to a DVD, before a box set containing all twenty episodes of the season was marketed. The DVDs were released throughout 2006, and a collector's edition containing additional bonus features was later released on June 22, 2010.

  • This season of the Avatar series won several awards, including "Best TV series" and "Best Animated Television Series", at the 2005 Pulcinella Awards.[1]
  • A live-action movie of the first book directed by M. Night Shyamalan, titled The Last Airbender, was released in 2010. However, unlike the series, the movie was not a critical success. Book One was later adapted into the first season of Netflix's live-action adaptation Avatar: The Last Airbender, released on February 22, 2024.
