How tall is Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi?
Well, I presume this is a real picture of people, but removed from the ground, the way they're standing looks very strange.
I did think about the problem of the different sources of the images, though it seemed to me that Korra/Mako were pulled from 1 location, the Red Lotus pulled from another, & so comparison within groups should be possible. As for between groups, I'd have to go through the series & see how well that reflects their onscreen relative heights.
Even out-of-context, none of them look as skewed as Mako does on that chart.
And they were from two different sources. Korra and Mako are from that "New Friends" image (companion piece to the "Old Friends" one which is infamous for twentysomething Zuko looking like an alien); the jailbreak!minibosses are from concept art that was first shown at SDCC and can be seen in the art book.
Even on-screen, their heights are slightly inconsistent. (There was apparently a recurring belief among the fandom, for quite a while, that Bolin was either shorter than Korra or taller than Asami. Enough said.)
That's what I figured, though I actually have no idea what you're talking about.
I thought Asami was shorter than Korra, does that really prove anything other than that people can be bad judges of relative dimensions? Which is basically my thought on the whole Mako thing.
The "Old Friends" and "New Friends" group pictures were released (IIRC) at the Comic-Con before Book 2. (Come to think of it: the images on the chart are actually from three different sources. The image of P'Li with the sidecut is from this character design reference.)
It at least suggests that there's some degree of inconsistency (somewhat to be expected even from a studio as good as Mir). And also, that it was fairly rare for some characters to be positioned in such a way that we could get a good look at their relative heights. (Case in point: the chart positing that Kya is taller than Lin—cute though the idea may be to someone who casually 'ships them—is using an image in which Lin is quite clearly further away from the camera as a reference.)
Also: I looked up that last image (which puts Tenzin at the same height as Mako and puts Korra at 5'5"). Turns out it's from Heather Campbell, for whatever that's worth.
Then I don't see what's odd. In context, the way Mako is standing is perfectly normal, & as for Zuko, he looks a lot like a younger version of his dad.
Well, maybe, since they have to redraw the characters, & it isn't the same model being moved around. But I don't think the fact that fans were confused necessarily implies that there was any inconsistency, any more than the fact that I didn't notice this alleged inconsistency proves it doesn't exist. Absent of evidence, one's perspective only bears witness to what they believe they saw.
Right, I said that.
If I could figure out how you found that out, it might be pretty compelling.
That's because, although there's only the barest suggestion of a "floor" in the "New Friends" image, Mako does appear to be standing on a slight incline. It's like everyone's on top of a low rise.
And it wasn't whether or not Zuko looks like his dad; it was that his whole facial structure looked "off" to at least a significant percentage of people.
I follow Heather Campbell's blog, and thought that it looked familiar. So I did some minor sleuthing and found it in the middle of a sketch dump post.
She does seem to have admitted that it's guesswork on her part, but even so: it's the most recent word on character heights from anyone directly involved with the franchise (she did "Friends for Life" and the two "Turf Wars" covers we've seen so far; and still media is a lot less forgiving when it comes to discrepancies like that). And based on the panels we've seen so far, Irene Koh also seems to be going with the idea that Korra is of average height. (Most of the time, anyway. We don't have much in the way of both badass girlfriends on the same footing yet).
True. In the Old Friends Poster, Katara is also leaning into Aang's side a bit, and Sokka has his head tilted back.
I thought Zuko looked a bit more like snake, haha. It was a little..... too sleekly defined, even for him. Still love him though. Come to think of it, when do you think that portrait was taken?

Yeah, a bunch of people were saying "alien" and "lizard man" and things like that, on the grounds that his face looked flat and streamlined to a degree that invoked the uncanny valley. And they look maybe mid-twenties to me.
I really love how he and Sokka are the closest.
He is trying to keep a poker face because newborn Izumi is unhappy the portrait is keeping Daddy away so long.
