Badgerfrog

A badgerfrog

The Badgerfrog is a furry, hopping animal that is indigenous to the Western Fire Nation. At first look, the badgerfrog seems cute and harmless, but if cornered by a predator, it will defend itself by hopping, clawing, and biting angrily. Badgerfrogs seem to enjoy sounds, and may stay at a certain if it knows it will be hearing a speech or conversation.

It is first seen when Zuko practices his introduction to the Avatar's group in "The Western Air Temple". This particular badgerfrog seems to be friendly to Zuko and lives at his campsite. However, it is not seen after Zuko joins Aang's group. During "The Boiling Rock, Part 1", Zuko instructs Aang in a letter to do a series of exercises every time he hears a bagderfrog while he's away, causing Aang to complain that "nobody else has homework". This could indicate that badgerfrogs have a fairly regular croaking pattern, since otherwise Zuko would have had no real idea of how much Aang was practicing.
